It is so crazy when you think about how many great champions there have been who didn't reach their true prime until their mid 30s. Hopkins, Martinez, Tarver, Marquez, etc.....and many of them went through that prime all around the same time. Pavlik got beaten by two of them. No shame in that. Kelly is still a hell of a fighter and was one of my favorite's to watch because he went out there to bang. And being half Argentine, Maravilla fights were a staple in our house especially after we saw the Cintron fight - where he was CLEARLY ROBBED. The guy was just so much fun to watch fight, the skill and the speed were amazing and he was always so positive and humble. Great role model as well. Best of luck to both of these guys in retirement.

ya no hay escuela de boxeo en argentina .Nadie usa un jab.por eso salen afuera y cobran mal.es la realidad ya no hay escuela. deberian irse todos afuera a aprender box.el Chino mejoro cuando se fue con Robert garcia.

great fight, Pavlik a humble man in defeat always a winner in my book..but Martinez what an amazing champion.

Can you imagine if Martinez started boxing when he was a kid instead of when he was in his 20s? probably the most elusive middle weight ever.

Ojalá el día 21 de Agosto de 2020 vuelva a dar un espectáculo como este y después se preparé para enfrentar a más boxeadores. Lo quiero ver campeón otra vez. De lejos el mayor espectáculo de boxeo siempre lo ha dado maravilla.

Pavlik is not only gentleman during the fight but also in this setback. But after losing to Hopkins, he was never the same. Still a great kid.

Agreed. I love pavlic's style, always coming forward, walking his opponents down. Great fundamentals and a good clean fighter. I also like how no nonsense he always is both in and outside the ring. Gotta love those 2 Taylor flights!

Kelly Pavlik only succumbed to alcohol throughout his boxing career. None of his opponents, including Hopkins, could win against him.

Yeah it was a great effort to improve so quickly. I heard he took up boxing because soccer was too hard on his legs. In the end it caught up with him. His legs were gone in the Cotto fight.

Martinez got away with that because 1) He was a world class athlete to begin with. 2) He as a tremendously talented fighter. Nothing he did in the ring was orthodox lol. He’s one of the most physically talented fighters I’ve seen. Would have loved to see him and Pacquiao or Mayweather. Also Canelo.

@@brandnew9834 I think Pacquiao influenced Martinez's style as well. Moved the same way, into his opponent's left hand instead of away from it. Martinez's left hand wasn't too shabby either....

After bycling tru 8 rounds, Sergio 9th round Stanima was displayed for a 30 year old. Legendary.

The whole HBO telecast was pretty fantastic. But you're right - Buffer gives me goosebumps as well.

Martine just turned it up a gear that pavlik couldn't match in the 9th. Whew.

Yeah I was just thinking that. Completely derailed him. Getting knocked out is one thing, but getting dominated for 12 rounds is hard shake off.

Pavlik en el octavo ya pidió que lo llevaran a la casa. Espectáculo de pelea de parte de Maravilla Martínez..

"Knockdown" in the 7th was clearly a trip.

Sergio is obviously a legend but i think Pavlik adapted halfway and probably would have won that contest had it not been for those awful cuts which clearly affected his vision. Really impressed by Kelly Pavlik to be fair.

This is similar too Spence, the drinking in between fights and blowing up in weight

Boxers became smart and gave Pavlik movement. Pavlik would nail you without any foot work.

You right. Mobile fighters gave Pavlik fits. Pavlik was able to the ring off but you could see that it wasn't natural for him. The punches didn't flow for Pavlik like they did for GGG or Chocolatitio when they cut the ring off...

Seguro que te gusta Gayweather a vos, que SÍ corrió de muchos, incluyendo de nuestro gran campeón Sergio "Maravilla" Martínez. Si Sergio hubiese corrido no hubiese enfrentado a Cotto cuando la rodilla no le daba más.

Martinez was far more aggressive to start this off especially compared to his fight Vs Williams. Lederman was wrong. 3 was a Pavlik round. Sergio ran too much in rounds 5-8 though imo. Round 8 was hardest to score. 9 saw Martinez really turn it around. That was a 10-8 to me even before they mentioned it. Busted him up badly and cut him again. Comparing power punches in that round is crazy. He continues to pour it on to end the fight.

He Knocked Paul Williams out cold and last time I checked “winning by points” is harder,Pavlik has 12 rounds and couldn’t get the job done! Your comment is dumb!

This fight shows that cotto will destroy martinez regardless of when they met. Martinez moved the same in this fight as he did in the Cotto fight. Slow side to side, hands down, and just waiting to be caught. Chavez Jr. and Cotto caught him. Pavlik couldn't

Chavez jr got his ass whopped except for the 12 round...and when martinez fought cotto ha had no legs at all ...at his best martinez was avoided even by floyd and pacquiao

I thought Martinez's fights were often quite thrilling. Both Williams fights were explosive. The Dzinziruk fight was brutal. Even the Chavez fight when he went down in the last round was exciting. I thought this was a masterclass, while admittedly not his most exciting.

@@trackandfieldarchive masterclasses aren't fun to watch but a win is a win. I feel that guys who complain about real boxing shouldn't watch. To get into the ring and brawl, especially by causals who complain about fighters quiting but wouldn't last a minute in the world against real pros is absolutely ridiculous. It would ruin your longevity, but to box in a boring manner would not be the best entertainment wise, but longevity and skill wise. Getting in the ring to even consider taking abuse for no reason is not something you'd like to do. But hey, you can't please everyone.
