Thing is, there already WAS a jukebox musical of sorts built around Beatles songs, which dealt with villains who hated joy and love, and ended with the villains defeated by the power of love and music. But that one was called Yellow Submarine, and somehow, that one WORKED.

That's not the only one, they also had 'A Hard Day's Night', 'Help!' and 'Magical Mystery Tour'. The first two are quite good, while 'Magical Mystery Tour' is just... a thing.

P.S. It might still be possible to make a good 'Sgt. Pepper' movie using only the songs from the original 1967 album, and not try to shove in even more Beatles songs.

That is possible. The title song and its reprise that bookend the album suggest some sort of framing device. After a performance of "Sgt. Pepper's", whether by the band or by a narrator figure, the band introduces Billy Shears as their newest member. He sings "A Little Help From My Friends" to test the audience's reaction, eventually backed by the band. I leave it to someone much more creative to figure out how to work the rest of the songs in, but it could theoretically work.

Piece of trivia: KISS was supposed to play the F.V.B. (One could argue the make-up alone, then still a novelty, could well have helped convey the "evil" that was otherwise lacking in that scene.) I've always found it ironic that my favorite performance in this movie is the one sung by the guys we're not meant to root for. I mean, the "Future Villain Band" is supposed to be the incarnation of all that's negative in the music industry, devoid of heart and artistry, right? But Tyler and his crew are the only ones who actually seem SERIOUS about what they're doing. They're visceral and engaging, there's an energy in them that none of the main characters really seems to have. Frampton and the Bee Gees, meanwhile, lack any real depth to latch on to. They're happy-go-lucky cartoons with standard issue good guy directives, without significant personalities or even stage presence. They're just putting on a show. It's only when Aerosmith comes out that things briefly seem to get REAL. I'm inclined to fantasize that the real motives of the FVB were far more complex than just "we're mean." What if these people realized that Heartland represented a pointless status quo that needed to be disrupted? The sweet dreams and facile happiness emanating from the magical instruments were brainwashing people into doing without the necessary complexity of life lived to its fullest. The FVB were a natural reaction against a superficial utopia. I mean, think about it... can you imagine people who enjoy hard rock or heavy metal living comfortably in Heartland's world? Maybe they were just trying to start a revolution because it was time to grow up and enter the Eighties! At least, that's how they saw it. Sure, every villain wants to take over the world, but they all think they've got good reasons for it. But no, Steven Tyler dies, the one really intriguing scene in the movie comes to an end., and all we ever know about the FVB is that they were the bad guys. Peace and love win, I guess.

I have a strong liking for this film, and I really shouldn't, being a massive Beatles fan. In my opinion, it could and should have been done in England, plus with an insane concept and cast, it needed someone like Monty Python to make it work. Behind the scenes, it's visually brilliant, the Heartland set is a triumph, it was the last set built on MGM's Lot 2, before it was all sold off for real estate. Considering one plot point of the film has Mean Mr. Mustard selling off Heartland for real estate, that could be seen as an omen. Oh, and say what you will about Peter Frampton's acting, he was really crying real tears during Strawberry's funeral, as he was thinking of the recent crash that had killed most of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

LOL, they made a Beatles musical at my high school just some months after this review originally aired. They called it "Penny Lane", and it was really mediocre as well despite some nice flashy visuals and decent acting and song performances. The problem was obviously the narrative, which could have been good if it focused on the main story, but instead we had so many subplots and so many intrigues that weren't fully explained until we had reached the climax and things got resolved. Fortunately for me, I was lucky to be in the ensemble that put up "Lord of the Flies" the same year, which was considered a favorite at the school

These are just my own ideas, but it MIGHT work if... - Sgt. Pepper's instruments went missing after his death so Heartland is already a herehole to begin with, making the Lonely Heart Club Band's voyage a recovery mission with some purpose - The agent B.D. is the main villain of the piece who seduces the travelling band with fame to derail them - B.D. secretly already has the instruments, which he intends to give to the evil F.V.B band, which he also runs, to corrupt and spread hate and greed with. He distrubutes three of them among his henchmen to protect them. Maxwell Edison could be a psychopathic surgeon who makes the talent conform to the social idea of beauty. Lucy essentially remains a sexy decoy but is now a deliberate villainess. If you needed a sympathetic third, maybe Eleanor Rigby - a lovelorn young woman who, lacking love herself, felt compelled to steal it from others (Heartland restored would essentially act as her happy ending and second chance as well). Her name song could be a dream sequence in which she envisions her lonely and bleak future as an old lady. Rescuing Strawberry from the evil band could be her Heel-Face Turn, as she's seen true love between her and the protagonist and wants to save it. - Drop Mr. Mustard. Maybe give "When I'm Sixty-Four" to either B.D. or Maxwell to sing to Strawberry - as comedic relief, creepiness and an attempt to seduce her to the dark side all in one.

Kinda, at least what I know about it. It did focus mainly on the corruption and glamor, told through ambitious stage effects, a better handling of the songs presented, and even John and Paul attended and enjoyed. Plus, unlike this movie, the cast and crew all enjoyed the production of the play and had an awesome time making it.

+LaydiNite I like both movies, I think one of the problems is that some people take things a bit too seriously......one of the ideas I feel The Beatles pushed with some of their songs. Not every song they did told a story or made much sense, but they were fun and catchy. Not all movies have to be serious or dramatic masterpieces, one reason a lot of comedies and science fiction films got snubbed so often. This is a strange little movie, but it is visually entertaining and the music is good. Not everyone has to like them, not everyone's opinions are set as law for others on what is good or bad.

I know this movie. I was a teenager when it came out (roughly) and I vividly recall George Burns’ last grasp at fame before he was dead. He did a big tv special celebrating his (I believe) 100th birthday, when he was actually about to turn 90; he had a song on the country western radio stations; he was God not once, but twice (that were good movies); and besides, that’s not strictly a soft shoe he’s doing there (tho if it were, I’d excuse it on the grounds of Vaudeville and how he was a big star there-him and Gracie). Oh, and have I mentioned? I love your show!!

I was in high school when this "film" came out, and even then we thought it was a cringy disaster. So here's the strange part for the younger folks... When Sgt Pepper came out (1978), the Beatles had only broken up 8 yrs earlier. To us, those 8 yrs felt like 30. That's how badly the Beatles were missed and that's how important they are to the history of music. On a positive note... the filmed killed Frampton's career (instantly) and put a serious dent in the reputation of the BeeGees. Win!

And the "Eleanor's Dream" segment is beautifully scored and filmed. Matter of fact, there are two moments in there that give me chills. One's a bit of foreshadowing...Paul seeing Linda's ghost on horseback in the clouds. (Recall Paul's last words to Linda...) And then there's the bit where Paul watches a friend get murdered in the shadow of an imposing old building. Of course, there's no way of knowing whether Paul did this scene with that in mind, but still...

The song is one of the most human, sentimental (in a good way), and lovely songs ever, gutted by such an ironically inhuman, cold way of execution. Yuck!! I do enjoy a few things about the film, but even for a diehard Beatles fan it is hard to sit through. I do like that Billy Preston was given a prominent role, considering he nearly became a fifth Beatles at the very end of the band's existence, but I agree it was a cheat how his character was used. I have been enjoying your videos and recently subscribed. Excellent work! Keep it up! Thanks! Yayy!!!
