She really doesn't need it. Margaret Court only won 11 against professional players exclusively, and that still doesn't matter, because any of the top 20 players today would blow MC off the court.

Now it's clear Sharapova's movement is one of the culprit she had lost to Serena as she got older. One can't beat Serena if one is sluggish, she just has too many weapons at her disposal.

Serena showed her nerves of steel in this match! Both players played an awesome match. Sharapova used to hit so hard and consistent during these years.

As a player myself I've always used the grunts of my oppenent as a good timing mechanism for my own groundstrokes. Kvitova was once asked about the noises & she said the same as for the timing & also added you get an idea of the pace of the ball as well

I remember watching this and being amazed how Serena can make comebacks. Then, she just made it so regular, like she made a living out of coming back, like a lot.

Seriously, I can't believe Navritilova made a big deal about Seles' grunts back in the day when people came along later like Sharapova and Azarenka (who sounds like she's calling hogs). Honestly, even the Williams' grunts are much louder than Monica's were. Simona Halep is very loud, as well.

Serena is beautiful here: her patience, power, clean shots, coming into the net, retrieving, defence/offense, and her physique. Both women’s athleticism are amazing. I can’t help but wonder how brilliant Maria was, too, but now it comes with an afterthought. I still love watching both, especially Serena. This was another showcase of her famous cat-with-9-lives game.

I remember this match. I also remember Venus destroying her at Wimbledon too.

This was probably their toughest match.

The match that ended this rivalry. After this match Sharapova was lucky to even be competitive with Serena let alone beat her.

I always groaned when I learned Dick Enberg was going to commentate a match I was watching. After literally decades of commentating tennis, he learned next to nothing about the game, and continued to commentate like any stranger pulled off the street. No insights, no talks of strategy or technique.....he called the score mostly, and the rest was little more than "oh you can do better than that...."

Sharapova should have won this match. Also her movement was real good at this point in her career but became a major weakness as she grew. Add that to the shoulder injury and that ended this budding rivalry. Serena is deserved GOAT but I love them both.

When you are that high level of a competitor from a VERY young age it can manifest itself in negative ways. Doesn't make you a dislikeable person necessarily outside the court or tennis.

In my opinion and independent of the times that Serena Williams has won over Sharapova, the fact of the confrontation between these two ladies, generated a lot of expectation and that gathered a lot of public. Beyond the times that Serena won, is the healthy beauty of watching these two great champions play this beautiful sport. IMHO! 👌🏻💯😉🎾
