Sequre S99 - A fantastic and inexpensive smart soldering iron!

Today, I'm checking out the new S99 smart soldering iron from Sequre. I've been using a previous model of theirs for a few years and hasn't let me down yet. This new one boasts a new and easy way to swap out tips, and the ability to power it through a USB PD adapter, or the regular Lipo.
This iron was kindly supplied by Sequre for review, so if you want to check it out in more detail, please consider using this affiliate link to the product: sequremall.com/collections/so...

    Those tips are c245 style, the tips JBC stations use. If you look at the jbc stations, they have a notch on them that you can remove the hot tip without ever touching the tip., Tip changes using the right tools is a second or two... and you can find after market stands that have that same notched rest that fits behind the heat break on the tips.

    Great review of a useful tool. Sequre has quite a few soldering irons to choose from. Very reasonable price. I have 2 ts100 irons, so far been working great. If i were shopping for a new portable iron, this looks like a good option. 👍😎

    Pinecil. Open source iron. 40ish bucks. Takes USBC, Barrel jack, and 2-6s DC voltage. no need to look anywhere else! Solid review, none the less.

    Way superior tips if you are using 2 ohm tips or original jbc tips. They are more expensive but the soldering iron itself is not that much. And i never liked the ironos firmware, it looks a bit overengineered and less informative. Sometimes less is more, i would rather buy an original ts101 or sequre si012. Open sourced or not, it's barely a concern for a _soldering iron_

    Thanks for review. I am considering buying this model and there is not much info online, except official. So, any real use experience is helpful. Shopping options are just iron and tip which is reasonable price and whole kit which is not that reasonable, especially as kit contains some stuff that are not necessary needed. Other than iron and tip I would only need that adapter cable for battery use but that combination is not sale option. I wonder if that cable can be made by cutting of one side of ordinary USB-C cable and just mount battery connector to power wires, or it needs to be special cable? Anyone tried that?

    It's only been released a few months ago but there are plenty of reviews. Though it's not that hyped as TS100/101. Check out reviews for Sequre S60, it's the same soldering iron but for C210 tips with less power for micro soldering. And why would you cut a working cable? You can buy any female type-c(i recommend 2pin type-c) and make an adapter with xt30/60 connectors. Both S60 and S99 works perfectly from a DC power source including batteries. Just make sure that you don't messed up the polarity and your power source is sufficent(21V, up to 8-9A peaks for full power with 2 ohm tips and 12V, 5-6A for S60P. Less powerful sources can be used if they support pps protocol)

    Nice review. I like my TS100, but it seems to struggle on bigger joints. Things like battery leads and esc's have been problematic even if I cranked it up to 400C. Will this iron put out more heat than the TS100..or am I just using the wrong iron type 🤷

  • @CurryKitten

    @CurryKitten

    The S99 can do up to 500C. Actually, I thought you could use boost on the TS100 to get to 450C, but you might have needed the alternative firmware. You do want a tip with a pretty large flat section to get the heat running through though. Big joints on that little tip I used on the FC wouldn't work

    Please do not waste your money. I have tried 5-five known good PPS/PD/QC power bricks, several over 100 watts and even a 240 watt one, plus many verified cables. The S99 iron will not go over 10 watts. I even purchased the lower resistance tips. I suspect that the company missed the mark on the PD emarker chip to properly negotiate the voltage for this soldering iron. I have a USB PD power meter as well as the indicator on the iron itself to verify power levels. It's too bad as I love the form factor of this iron, the weight and hand feel are perfect, but the power is way too low. If all you ever solder is 22 gauge wire, then this iron might work. If you can track down the manual or the website you'll see it mentions how the power level might not be negotiated properly and advises to change some settings. I changed settings for over an hour, no luck. Actually certain combinations of power settings cause the iron to reboot. As a last resort I tried a genuine Dell 65 watt USB C laptop charger, and still iron only at 10 watts, even after trying every combination of power settings and many USB 3.2 verified cables

    Hi Richard, I‘m no Solder expert, but I really love the packaging and form factor of the Iron, matter of fact I‘m not comfortable about soldering at all, but the love for FPV drones makes me want to be great at soldering, so I think 22 guage wires would be all I‘d be working on, I do have another soldering iron as well, but it just doesn’t feel too comfortable and I get shaky hands, so I‘d love to see if this helps, also if you have any tips on the shaky hands thing, please help me out.

    I have several PD irons and they have all given me issues with power supplies. My theory is that some power supplies are very particular about power spikes or noise or something, and these irons all create that the way they work. So the power supplies reset on me all the time. Once I used an XT60->USB-C cable all my problems went away and these irons run great.
