Delighted to find these helpful tutorials; as new Prophet 5D user ! Will visit /revisit often, for as long as needed. A but frustrating here, as keyboard P10 layout is enough different from Desktop Module, to force frequent pauses, to check & recheck Settings. Several times, your changes seemed unedited, yet some unnoticed changes were made in sections not focused at the moment. When changed to match P10 settings, P5D ceased making sound. Usually assume pilot error here, but lost continuity in process. Looking forward to more of this guidance, so important in bringing confidence and enjoyment to Sequential Prophet usage ! 🙏🏻

Yeah, I was a bit surprised to see the desktop module rearranged so much. I work with several students who have them and we need to pause to make sure they know where the section is. That being said, all of the techniques and ideas still apply. But you might need to pause to figure out where it is located your unit. Happy to hear it was helpful though! :)

@@ToddUrban Are there perhaps any modular or semi-modular tutorials in the works. For instance maybe the Moog matriarch? 😁

@@greenvelvet I'd love to. I would first need to get one! But I'm thinking about doing a general "how to get started with modular synthesis" video at some point. I might start with just software at first.

@@ToddUrban That's a great idea!! I kind of jumped into the Moog modular without knowing even the basis of synthesis. it's pretty fun trying things but not having the basic foundational knowledge definitely has made obstacles.

I always thought that polyphonic meant that each voice gets its own lfo, oscs, envelopes etc. But it seems that the lfo on the prophet 5 only works globally. Meaning, i cant have the lfo from a note/voice and another note/voice phasing at different points in their lfo cycle. So for ex. The filter slowly rising on a hele note while the filter is slowly cycling down on another held note. 🤔

Technically, polyphony only applies to the number of voices you have. (Compared to monophonic, which is only one voice, or duo phonic like some keyboards such as the Moog Sub 37) So if you want individual modulation, this is where the poly mod section allows you to perform individual triggers for each voice so that the envelope can open independently of the other voices. But something like the global mod sections will act on all voices at once. (I hope that helps)

@@ToddUrban Hey thanks for the reply but you’re actually wrong about the terminology or you are misunderstanding my question - Specifically, the main lfo appears not to be polyphonic (I’m not talking about polyphony) i.e. not per voice. Slo the envelopes without polmod are polyphonic - perhaps the VST is different on this point. Polyphony and polyphonic are different terms when referring to synth capabilities as I’m sure you know. Polyphonic (not polyphony), when it’s In the context of explaining a synthesizers ability, means that 1 voice equals 1 of everything lfos, envelopes, etc. Then you have paraphonic - note polyphony with single lfo and envelopes, etc. and then there’s variphonic. So it seems that the prophet 5 does not have 5 true voices because, although the amp and filter env is polyphonic per voice (without poly mod), the main lfo is not polyphonic. Perhaps it’s variphonic. You should check out Mark Doty (automatic gainsay) on KZread. He explained this rather well n his video “Your Wrong About Polyphony”

@@GrootsieTheDog Sorry it was early in the morning and maybe I didn't address this clearly. Each of the five voices consist of an Oscillator section with two oscillators, dedicated voice mod, PW, FCF, and VCAs. They are mixed together with noise going through a mixer before entering the lowpass filter. Each voice contains two envelope generators that independently control the filter and the amplifier (VCA). Due to this, the synth is considered polyphonic, not paraphonic. However, it also features a Global Modulation bus (which you pointed out) but then per-voice- modulation through the PolyMod section. So yes, the LFO on the bottom left is global, but still has the characteristics on each voice card to make the synth considered to be defined as polyphonic. Hope that helps and I appreciate you bringing the topic up here for further explanation.

By the way, I did a bit more digging to try and find a polyphonic synth that offers per voice LFOs. The Nord Lead 3 and Access Virus were two of the first to introduce this. But of course this was many years after the Prophet was already using the term Polyphonic. Another example is that the Polymoog is fully polyphonic (voice per key) with 3 global LFOs. So there aren’t really hard lines here when referring to “polyphonic”.

@@ToddUrban Thanks for the info! I’m a super geek on all this. All these differing behaviors between synths helps me to get to know their unique characters - the more I create music with them, knowing the little things like global lfo or per voice pitching (like on the OBx), helps me to know how to approach shaping sounds on them. 😀 It seems in the synth community the technical definition of polyphonic in the context of defining synth capabilities differs. Some seem to be very hard line and believe a “true polyphonic” synth would be each voice having its own dedicated voice, lfo, envelope, etc. vs “polyphony” being multiple tones all at once. Anything else would fall into paraphonic or, the newer term, variphonic - a combination.
