Do you have to sift them? I have all my mealworms on oats and they are too big to go through any sifters without all my beetles going through also, I have a colony of about 150 right now, should I just pick them out one by one into another container or how would I separate the eggs?

  • @spacecoastmealworms

I usually keep about 1,000 beetles in each tray, but only because of a lack of extra space and for easy counting reasons. Research has shown that fewer is actually better, so ideally I would get a lot more babies if I only kept 250 beetles in each of these trays, but it would require many more trays, substrate, and space!

Question. Why did you put the beetles back in the same tray that has the eggs on the bottom? I would think to put the eggs in that container and the beetles in a new container. Great videos. I'm learning a lot from them. I picked up meal worms and beetles from my second grade teachers at the end of the insect unit. I'm going to see if I can get the beetles to lay. I'm going to give it two weeks and then move them to a new section.

Beetles don’t need to much depth since they generally stay on the surface. The females need at least an inch to burrow down to, to lay their eggs. More than that is just wasteful, especially if you use my strategy of combining multiple egg-rich trays into larger trays.

If you meant to type "frass in my bins" and that it's coming out on it's own, that's not frass, it's grain mites swarming. They are in all grains. Before introducing your substrate you need to heat it at 205F-225F (opinions vary) for an hour (opinions vary). You can put it on a cookie sheet in an oven. To get rid of all the mites you see - very time consuming but can be done. Internet search for "meal worm grain mites".

    4 жыл бұрын

Anthony If you are using multiple trays like this I don’t suggest using oats as substrate. The pieces are too large to sift through these green sifting trays. The only time I ever recommend using oats is if you have a screened bottom drawer system for your beetles. The oats won’t fall through the screen holes like wheat bran would. But most farmers use wheat bran for all stages - it’s cheaper in bulk and much easier to sift. You can usually find a 50lb bag at your local feed store for less than $20. Oats, on the other hand, is more expensive.

  • @spacecoastmealworms

It’s actually quite rare for them to fly away if you keep them happy. They don’t eat much as beetles, but do need a source of moisture. A carrot or potato slice will keep them happy enough to stay in their trays.

It’s the grain bedding that mealworms live in. Most farmers use wheat bran, oats, cornmeal, chick starter, or other dry grains.

If I get 50lbs of wheat bran and I start with 5k mealworms how often will I go through 50lbs bags of wheat bran do you think? Im new to this and have lots of quail so Id like to breed mealworms for my birds. Im goimg to be switching from expensive 28% protein food to fodder (barley fodder and cut up sunflower sprouts for the b vitamins etc) and meal worms (also they will be free ranging in the greenhouse getting their own bugs). I feel like this will be the only cost effective way to give them a closer to natural diet (getting them off dry grain crumbles and back to insects mostly with some plant matter). Just trying working my budget around to see what it will cost me. I found organic wheat bran which I would rather get but can use normal. Just depends on how often Im going to need more lol. So I thought Id talk to someone who knows to find out how much Id have to go through. If the 50lbs bag will last more than a month I might as well get them the good stuff lol, but if I will be goimg through it in less than a month I will go with normal.

It really depends on how many trays you have your worms and beetles in. If you rotate beetles to a new tray each week that's a few cups of bran a week, plus whatever you add to your worm trays. If you just use a 3-drawer method or something similar, you can easily go 2-4 months on just 50lbs. I started with 5,000 worms a year ago and am just now to the point where I go through a 50lb bag in a week with just over 50 trays.

Or would you recommend a bigger set up? Bigger trays? Thanks so much. It is so hard to find the information here on mealworms. A little in this video, not much in that one, then watch about ten more only to never get all the information. However this video was great for the sifters,, which I think I will need eventually. Good video too!

Feed off or sell your mature worms before they pupate.. or you can place worms in the refrigerator for a few months if you need to slow them down a bit

Dont you waste lots of bedding with eggs every time you sift?

  • @spacecoastmealworms

    @spacecoastmealworms

    2 жыл бұрын

No, because I separate my beetles from my worms, and rotate beetle bedding out every couple weeks. This means all the worms in a tray are relatively the same age/size and there aren’t any eggs left by the time I eventually sift the worm tray for the first time.

You're putting the beetles back into the tray with eggs attached to the bottom...that's allowing those beetles to eat those eggs. Why aren't you using a fresh tray with the fresh bran?

I’ve heard that beetles can cannibalize their eggs, but I haven’t ever seen it in action, have you? I think it might just be a long-standing rumor. Worms are definitely cannibalistic, but beetles are too busy getting busy from my experience.

@@spacecoastmealworms well if you haven't noticed a difference in numbers it must be OK. But those eggs will hatch before next separation of beetles (depending on how often you do that) do the beetles not eat baby mealworms either? They'd make a pretty good moisture supplement. I'm only asking, as I've seen so many times on sites that the eggs will get eaten by the beetles if they're left with them...just trying to clarify and find out others experiences
