Sent Out - July 7, 2024

As we follow Jesus’ ministry through the Gospel of Mark, we travel with him back to his hometown of Nazareth, where he receives a less-than-warm welcome. On the heels of his rejection by those who perhaps know him best, Jesus turns to his attention to his disciples. Dividing them into pairs, he sends them out to the surrounding villages to preach, teach and heal. They are to take nothing with them: no bread, no bag, no money-not even an extra shirt! They are to rely on the hospitality of those they encounter, but not everyone will receive them, Jesus warns. Both of these stories remind us that our efforts will not always produce the results for which we hope. Still, Christ sends us out, just as he sent the Twelve, to minister with faith, love and hope. How are we being sent out into our community today?
