I made this soap for the 1st time a little over 3 weeks ago. I used sugar water instead of the malted barley. I cut after one day & just used a bar in the bathroom sink last week...Its a heck of a hard bar of soap, but it lathers great. You can smell the tallow, but its not overpowering. My skin feels great after using it.

😂 2 save money just buy the biggest pack of soap in these case dove unscented and grate a few bars maybe 2 bars.follow soap body wash recipe and turn into body wash once done add natural moisturizer gentle essential oils depending on skin tolerance barrier or sensitivity u can save bottles from previous body wash or even gentle dish soap

I make this soap and I love it, I'am a 60 old years and always use Dove and your soap 10% superfatting is great, it leaves my skin soft and hydrated as Dove. Now always 8-10% for my soap. I don't like the feeling 5%. Thank you very much for your time, recipes ect.

Sodium Lactate is a humectant; it is found in our skin's natural moisturizing factor. (in fact it is more effective than glycerin), while sea salt is just Natrium Chloride - table salt derived from sea water, so it might contain some more minerals than ordinary table salt.

continued: stearic acid is a saturated fatty acid; in soaps it works as a bar hardener, gives a creamy lather + cleans perfectly. Not saponified it act as an emollient and co-emulsifier. T.EDTA and T Etidronate, are not "the same thing" as you say, but do a good job here as a water-softener a.o. Opinions about syndets vary; but there are as many people hyper sensitive for those, as there are to natural ingredients like coconut oil or shea butter. But overall thumbs up for your tuts. :)

I have a question for anybody who's tried this soap and a lot of other soaps out there. Any time I buy "organic" or homemade soap, it leaves an odd feeling after rinsing it off, like the water is beading up on my skin and I'm now slightly water-repellent. That's the best way I can describe it. Dove is about the only bar soap I've ever used that feels smooth and natural after rinsing off. How does this recipe compare to that feeling? And is there an obvious reason why this soap would differ from most other bar soaps I've tried? Thanks!

  • @RepublicTX

The synthetic detergents in Dove and other commercial bars is what causes water to sheet off your skin. Those detergents also strip the natural oils off your skin, usually requiring you buy and use another moisturizing product. Handmade soap retains all the natural glycerin created in the saponification process. Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it attracts water to itself. When you use handmade soap, the glycerin can create the feeling you describe because it's attracting moisture in the air to your skin. I've found it's most noticeable with soft water.

In the past few months of making my own soap I've experienced what you describe firsthand. Essentially, homemade soap leaves "soap scum" which is good for your skin and a bit hydrophobic due to the presence of oils and glycerin. It's funny that bars like Dove boast about having no soap scum...yet that's kind of the best part of actual soap.
