Sense & Sensibility- Deleted Scene better version.
Ойын-сауық
This is a deleted scene from Sense and Sensibility. I didn't change it, but I improved it with romantic background music in the middle. You can totally feel a difference in the emotion of the scene with the music added. It makes it so much more enjoyable to watch.

This scene is romantic, but the other ending is so satisfying and beautiful to watch because Elinor had been holding everything in throughout the entire movie. While she didn't want to, she put aside her feelings for Edward around Lucy. She even held onto secrets and kept her head on around her family when they were emotionally falling apart. So seeing Elinor finally crying and letting it all go at the end is something that I'll remember for a long time.

For me Eleanor's reaction at the announcement of Edward's freedom was the highlight of the film.
Emma Thompson proudly admitted she wrote this scene "solely to get a snog off Hugh." ... Way to go Emma!

I've never seen this scene, but I understand why it was taken out. At least for me, it doesn't fit the build of the rest of the film. The huge climactic proclamation of love is in the proposal scene where Elinor finally lets her wall come down. This is my favorite film of all time, and I've always marveled at the fact that one of the most romantic films ever doesn't have a single kiss in it. While it's nice to see them kiss, I think the proposal scene shows a more mature and stronger love. The dialogue in this scene also seems less heightened than the rest of the film which threw me off a bit. Anyway, that's my two cents.

I agree. It is one of my favourite films, and is romantic despite the lack of kissing. This scene does seem a bit expository. The film overall is almost perfect for me, except for Hugh Grant’s portrayal of Edward. He is too awkward and nervous.
I much prefer the one they kept in the movie. I loved how in that scene you truly see how much she cares for Edward... How she's kept in all in until the moment she realizes he didn't marry Lucy.
I'm so glad they filmed this scene! It may not have made it to the movie, but at least is out there. I'll revisit it from time to time, just becuse it's light and sweet and beautiful.

I do admit that I thought it was adorable when he just said, "Excuse me" and went in for a kiss. ADORABLE!! Men these days must learn chivalry...
Is it just me or do other people need to watch that scene from time to time?

No! No! The other ending is so far much better. Elinor's reaction to hearing he isn't married was the best ever! This is sweet but not good.
I demand they bring back the entire cast and give us at least an hour of extended footage. ;)

5 years later and still i laughed at this comment
In Emma Thompsons wonderful diary of the making of the film she recalls the filming of this scene. She said it was heavenly. It makes sense that it was edited from the completed film but its lovely to have it there as a separate moment. The sadness of course is that Hugh Grant got completely caught up in that police incident in LA only weeks later. Certainly changed the general public's perception of him but in the end led to him playing more complex roles. He is terribly good in this - even though I have heard him interviewed and he doesn't think he is. He is wrong.

I love when Emma touches Hugh's hand as he's kissing her. Would've loved for this to have stayed in the movie!
Yes this is indeed a lovely scene, (especially with the addition of Pachelbel's Canon in D playing in the background) but I still feel the scene with Emma and Thompson when she bursts into incontrollable sobs at the end, really brings it home that she thought she had lost him. Thanks for posting.

This movie had very less Edward-Elinor scenes and I wanted them so badly.. :'( Still its one gem of a movie!
I'm glad this scene was not in the movie, but it's nice to have it here to enjoy from time to time.
HOW CRUEL IT IS TO REMOVE SUCH PART!!!! I'VE ALWAYS DREAMT OF MORE ELINOR-EDWARD PART!!!😭😭
Edward's explanation about how he misconstrued Colonel Brandon's offer to give him a parish makes perfect sense. He understood it to mean that Elinor and Colonel Brandon were going to be married, and that the Colonel had asked Elinor to convey his offer to Edward since they were already friends.

Yes! I can see why they didn't use this as the proposal scene in the movie, but I do love this scene. I'm not as familiar with the book, but I always supposed that Edward was under the mistaken impression that Colonel Brandon and Elinor meant to marry. It also makes me giggle to imagine Colonel Brandon's shock when he arrived later that day to learn that Elinor and Edward had been wanting to marry all along (which I'm sure he didn't suspect, or he'd never ever ever have asked Elinor to offer Edward the parish). Imagining Brandon's guilt is really fun! Brandon and Edward have very different personalities, but the same sense of honor and kindness, so they're going to get along great as brothers-in-law!

Yes, well, really. . . . Would anyone marry Edward if they could marry Colonel Brandon? No, rethink that! I have never believed that Marianne would marry Colonel Brandon, even if he sat by her bedside reading her the Kama Sutra.
@MandyJMaddison
2 жыл бұрын
Let me restate that. Why would any SENSIBLE woman marry Edward rather than Colonel Brando? Given that Marriane was not exactly sensible.
Deleting this scene brings it home that their love was unspoken, though perfectly understood. It also removes the possibility of taint that Edward had mislead Eleanor and cheated on Miss Steele. So no blame. Edward remains entirely honorable. Good editing. It's a lovely scene though.
oh my god he said "excuse me"!!!! I melted inside
This is a charming scene however I prefer the scene in the movie which better conveys Edward’s love for Elinor and the pent up unspoken emotions of love and pain Elinor kept hidden inside her heart, The movies version shows the release of Elinor’s emotions which makes that scene so poignant!
0:12 His laugh there is sweet. It's so genuine, it's like Hugh Grant genuinely found her line funny. Almost makes me wonder if Emma Thompson ad libbed the line about "sons to disinherit". Then he has quite a difficult segue into talking about when Eleanor told him of Colonel Brandon's offer, but he delivers it very smoothly, just by using his facial expressions and vocal inflections. Two brilliant actors. We don't need them to do any more than walk and talk, and they could even be wearing sacks rather than they're beautiful period costumes.
I swear Emma Thompson just wrote this scene just so she could kiss Hugh Grant 😆 but yeah it didn't fit with the story though 😅

How could they have deleted that scene! It added so much to the plot, plus the make out scene. I feel cheated!! ❤️
This could be a perfect scene to appear just after the proposal indoors. Walking together outside would be sooo satisfying for us!
I just like the part where he says “excuse me”, holds her face and proceeds to kiss her. One of the best kisses ever!
I love how Hugh keeps going in, ready to kiss her, and stops himself.
Glad they left this out. The movie was perfect the way it was. They did not need this. Glad they way it all came out in the end in an unspoken way.

Thank goodness it was cut. The 20th Century dialog is completely out of place and totally inconsistent with the characters' behavior throughout the film. Now the deleted scene where Elinor speaks with her mother after the apparent marriage of Edward -- THAT should never have been deleted!

omg i love this scene i love it how hugh grant says "excuse me" before he kisses emma...so romantic
Edward is so endearingly awkward. Love them both together 💜
While I understand why they cut this scene, it would have been nice to have this little epilogue to understand how Robert marrying Lucy went over for the family, especially since Fanny had almost literally tossed Lucy out on her ear for confessing to her engagement to Edward a few scenes earlier. I always wondered how his family could have reacted so violently to hearing about Lucy's engagement to Edward - even going so far as to disinherit him, but then rolled over complacently when his brother goes and marries her instead... and allowed him to keep the inheritance in the bargain.
I'm not sure why people are commenting as though keeping this scene would have meant replacing the proposal scene? In the book, the discussion they have here (not so condensed of course) takes place after the proposal. So it would have been an additional scene, not a substitute.
When Elinor bursts into tears from finally letting her emotions out, my favourite part was when the family members are shocked, dont know what to do and promptly leave the room. “Ooooh crap, yeah not sure what to do. BYE.”
Where has this scene been all my life?!
OMG... this guy is the most awkward...most amazing.....sweetest.....adorable....loveliest...man I've EVER seen in my life! Now THAT is a romantic kiss!

Had this scene been in the movie, you would not have heard the Pachelbel Canon in D. The Canon was patched into the scene as a "temp" score. Had the scene been included in the picture, it would have had original music scored for it by the film's.composer.
You can see Hugh almost corpsing at the line 'Yes, she still has Fanny' so funny! They couldn't keep a line like that in :-)
@actress4life777 I was listening to the commentary and Emma said it was because it took away from the flow of the scenes. (It was supposed to go in between when Edward proposed and the marriage of Marianne and Brandon.) The proposal built energy up and the kiss sort of knocked it down before the marriage.
I love it when he says "excuse me" lol! So sweet!!!
I can see why they cut the scene, and I'm happy with the ending. I mean, canon D would've literally ruined the movie for me. But I just love the line "I shall not forget attempting to thank him for making it possible for me to marry the woman I did not love while convinced he had designs upon the woman I did.... do."
That in itself, is a beautiful scene.
My heart is a puddle now...i checked😢💓👏
This is everything i ever needed and more. They're sooooooooo cute together ❤❤❤❤
Oh my GOODNESS!!! There was an actual kiss and they took it out?! I don't know whether to howl or cry. The rest of this scene was also a perfect testimony to the tentativeness and subtle humor these two displayed when they considered the absurdities of the world around them. One can just imagine that scene between Edward and the Colonel, with the poor cleric repressing his wounded feelings towards the man he thought had ruined his chances. Too bad we couldn't have witnessed that scene as well.
Thanks for sharing such a lovely scene! Although I think this scene is a bit superfluous to the whole movie, but Huge did it so briliantly
Let's be honest, Emma probably knew she wasn't gonna include this scene, but wrote it in anyway so she get that kiss from Hugh Grant.

Great scene, but was replaced by a better one. Elinor finally letting her guard down, giving way to hysteria, finishes the story as it was meant to be finished! This scene, with different dialogue, could have worked elsewhere in the film. It's beautiful, but not powerful enough to close the film.
should have put this into the movie.
Shame they left it out. I feel.it fills in part of the story that was missing.
Actually I think the released version with her surprise, and breakdown is much more moving and gratifying to see her happiness in the end.
I love that while he's awkwardly trying to figure out a way to kiss her, she's just staring into his eyes :)
