Senri Kawaguchi's Favorite Drum Licks (Subtitled -ドラムレッスン)

Senri Kawaguchi is not only one of Japan's premier drummers, but she's received global acclaim for her technique and prowess starting from a very young age. In this clip taken from Senri's Drumeo course, she breaks down four of her favorite licks. One cool thing to note is how she tends to give each pattern a name based on how it sounds or feels - a great trick for memorizing and writing drum parts in general.
Give them a try!
Introduction - 0:00
1. Shikashi-Nagara - 01:33
To make 16th note triplets easier to remember, use a word or phrase with six syllables (Senri uses shikashi-nagara). This pattern is six on the snare, two on the kick, two on the toms, and two on the kick for a total of 12 notes in the phrase.
2. Accented Sextuplets - 04:31
A 9-note pattern that consists of single and double strokes, accent every single stroke. You can make it sound bigger and more impressive just by changing where you place that accented note, whether it's on a cymbal or a tom.
3. Bah-Keh-Ratta - 06:44
Senri compares this lick to the sound of a horse running, which the pattern on the double kicks emulate. It sounds more complex than it is. This is a simple alternating right-left four-note phrase on the feet under a simple two and four with the hands.
4. Bira-Atsume - 09:46
If you're familiar with Senri's drum solos, you might recognize it. Her name for this lick was inspired by people collecting flyers (imagine pulling them toward you from multiple directions - it's a hand motion that looks almost like you're swimming). Think symmetrical: set up a symmetrical kit and have your right hand and right foot mirror what your left hand and left foot are doing. Like most of the other licks, it sounds more complex than it is. You can also 'collect flyers' from the right or left side instead of from the middle - it looks awesome!

Senri is the perfect blend of old skool and new innovative techniques. She employs them all creatively and flawlessly. She could easily play for any Rock band in the world (for money and fame), but chooses to embrace the most challenging musical endeavors. She's not just one of the best "girl" drummers ever, she's one of the best drummers overall. When you've shared the stage with masters like Lee Ritenour, Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl and Akira Jimbo (and they all respect your chops) you're undoubtably a "world class" musician. Thanks for sharing, Drumeo... awesome stuff!

And it simply pours out of her. Effortlessly, naturally." When she made a similar simile near the end of the video I got chills. Rock on girl, just seeing the joy it puts on your face as you play was awesome to witness, then the fact that you have a killer style on top of the love of playing, you're one of my top favorites now, instantly. Keep it up! Everybody needs to discover joy like this in something.

I know there’s probably some added effort required because of the language barrier, but I just want to say “Thank You” to Drumeo for providing content from Senri. I’ve been following her for about 5 years and she’s the reason I’ve discovered other amazing Asian musicians and bands. In my opinion, when it comes to female musicians, the Japanese ladies seem to dominate. While Senri is my favorite Jazz/Fusion/Soloist drummer, when it comes to the Rock/Hard Rock/Metal genre, Akane Hirose of Band-Maid (also from Japan) is definitely my favorite and currently ranked #1 on Rankers Greatest Female Drummers List (Hint, hint, some content from Akane would be great). As for my favorite Cover/KZread drummer, check out Tarn Softwhip from Thailand. She does amazing covers by Avenged Sevenfold and many others. Check out “Bat Country”.

Maybe she's underestimating the number of people who've heard of her, because her Zildjian vault video has 500K views, but the number of views on her own channel are way below that, so it's indeed reasonable for her to introduce herself assuming that many people will see her for the first time.

Playing drums since she was five. She's 23 in this video, so that's 18 years of playing. Senri's first DVD came out in 2009, when she was twelve and she start gigging soon after. Her first solo CD was released on her 16th birthday. She's young, yes - and look even younger than her years - but her understanding of the kit is at a whole different level. These are her four favorite licks, folks. That means she probably plays them without much conscious effort. Her ability is almost frightening.

"It will be the World's loss if she does not become famous worldwide." And it is so cool that the net allows superb talents like hers to be enjoyed by all, rather than filtered by a few greedy idiots who know absolutely nothing about music (or most anything else). When you look at the incredible number of absolute best seller books and authors that were turned down time and time again before they were accepted (most of them), and how many were accepted that were utter garbage, it becomes pretty obvious that that 'filter' itself is utter and total crap, like much of society, frankly. I suspect some of the most extreme talent in the world has been suppressed by idiots. Actually I can pretty much can guarantee that true with the data I've seen. Parasitic ankle biters are a group that are beyond useless, and usually the ones that take most of the profit, all the while harming the outcomes. Not always, but often.

@WhoDarestheMAN gamer I think they are simple, but not necessarily easy. It ain't the same thing. Beating Usain Bolt in a 100 m or 200 m race is quite simple, you only have to run faster than him... but is it easy...? Mmmmmm 🤔🤔🤔 I don't think so... Obviously, it's quite subjective. If you're used to play at high speeds, you may find it easy, but if you don't...

@WhoDarestheMAN gamer yes, the ones showed here are quite simple, but.... so what? Does it makes them less valid or less effective in their context? Maybe I'm wrong but I seemed to spot a derogatory intention in your first comment, like "bah, that's so easy, I can do better", you know what I mean. If I missunderstood you I apologize. But if I don't, I just don't understand why the fact of being simple or easy must be taken as a negative thing. The important thing for me is if it sounds good, and in my opinion, what she does here (and every time I saw her) sounds really good.
