    Hey, thanks, this is the most useful video I've seen on this microphone ! We can feel you're excited to get this microphone haha. I understand that, I'm a "makes tons of research before buying" guy too ! Also, you seem very authentic, I value that :) I plan on shooting outdoors too, but "life scenes" from the city or towns. Because of that, I did research about mics like you and dwelved into the world of wildlife video gear, it's amazing haha ! Did you know about parabolic mics ? What parameters do you use for these shots, did you edit those in post prod or is it raw sound from the mic ? What was the gain ?

    Hi. Thank you for the great comment. I try to keep my videos pure and authentic and it is nice to hear that someone values this. I have never written a script for a video, so everything I say is straight from the heart. I wish more people valued authenticity as much as you. The pressures on KZread to move towards professional production are very intense these days. As far as the audio goes. What you are hearing is straight out of the mic. No audio editing or enhancement of any kind was performed. The only thing I did was to adjust the volume of each clip to equalize the volume between the clips. Some birds are louder than others. But these volume adjustments were pretty minor, as the microphone really does a great job and my camera has some sort of AGC as well that boost sensitivity during really quite times. I wish it did not do this, but there is no way to turn it off as Sony flatly denies that the camera even has this feature, even after I have provided them undeniable proof that the camera is doing it. It has been a personal war of mine for sometime trying to get Sony to fix this. As of yet, they still deny that it does, despite of hundreds of people complaining about it. Thanks again for commenting.

    Very nice review , amazing sound ! Thanks for sharing with us. I do lots of filming outside in different kinds of weather. I’ve recently bought Sennheiser MKE 440 and Sennheiser original Fur windshield. I was very disappointed with the results. The wind protection was horrible compared to my 12 years old Sennheiser MKE-400 with its original windshield.

    AMAZING SOUND !! Thanks for this video - I am in love with this mic after watching this - as you can see from my channel - I film everything outdoors and would love a mic to pic up on the beautiful sounds of Australia. You have convinced me - a new subscriber from the Gold Coast of Australia

    I am so glad this video helped out. I love this mic. It is everything I hoped it would be. You will not be disappointed. I posted a link in the description of the video to the exact kit that I bought that includes the on-camera shock mount and dead cat wind filter you see in this video.

    Great video. Can you give me an idea of the distance between the camera and subject this mic is effective?

  • @nothingbutgadgets

    @nothingbutgadgets

    I am not sure exactly what you are asking. The effective range will be determined by a lot of factors outside of the mic itself. With a good preamp you could probably pick up a mouse squeak at 50 yards, but the ambient atmosphere might be so loud that it would render the recording unusable. Most of the shots in this video were shot at between 10 and 15 yards, if that helps.

    Would there be less hissing noise if the mic was run through a preamp rather than straight to camera? (I'm new to audio)

  • @nothingbutgadgets

    Possibly, but I too am not an audio technician. There is just a certain hum or hiss that exists. I call it the Hum of Nature. When I was a young man, I have been out to sea and have experienced absolutely quiet on days when the ocean was like glass and It is actually quite deafening. This hum of nature becomes so loud that it is almost unbearable. I am sure quality preamps might have some kind of filter to filter out this hum better than a camera.

    Thanks for the review. The the mic is XLR but the cable looks like it goes directly into a 3.5mm camera plug. ?? I dont get it, i thought XLR and plug in power dont mix. Please explain whats going on. Thanks

    There is a difference between what is preferable and what is doable. When using an XLR mic, it is preferable to connect it to an XLR audio device. However this does not mean that connecting it to a 3.5mm jack (as seen in the video) is not "Doable". Clearly it is doable, and quite functional at that. In my case my camera does not have an XLR jack so connecting it to the 3.5mm pin jack is the only option. In fact, I am not aware of a Mirrorless camera that actually has an XLR jack, so for an On-Camera setup, this is going to be the only option. The only alternative is to use a separate XLR recorder and splice the audio together with the video in post processing. I hope this helps clear things up.

    I just realized the 600 has a battery so phantom power is not required. Now it makes sense. I didn't understand how the 600 was getting power from the camera since it was an XLR mic. But it's a dual powered mic. Very cool.

    My 600 has a AA battery incorperated in the Mic' ... did you not think to mention this, would be of interset???...

  • @nothingbutgadgets

    This microphone has both battery and phantom power capabilities. This means that it does not need a battery if it is connected to a camera that provides phantom power for it, which would be the majority of cases since not many people are going to put a $400 microphone on a $100 camera. But I do need to come back and do a more exhaustive review of this mic now that I have a lot of time to use it. This video was primarily just an unboxing and natural sound testing video. I had never actually used the mic and was unboxing it live for the first time in this video.
