Is it worth getting this to improve hearing in gaming on a high end PC (with a good motherboard)?

@@orlie_dev If you have the space in the computer I would rather go with an internal Creative Soundcard.

After the firmware upgrade I switched the output format to 24-bit 96kHz since I only use output switch between my headphone and speakers. Bought it used, aging close to 5 years and counting, let's see how long will it survive

I think most people are skipping on the set up. There is a simple step by step process where you right click you speaker icon. I ended up changing mine to 16 bit and it drastically changed the sound entirely i played with a couple of other settings as well from that menu but it made a drastic difference.

I bought one for a similar reason years ago and it eventually died out of warranty. Upon picking it up it had a rattle which was intriguing because I never moved it, and it didn't have a rattle (that I remember) when it was new. I took it apart (out of warranty and broken so...profit?) and after figuring out it had 4 screws, 2 under the rubber foot strip and 2 under the serial # label, a black mark on the PCB and what I can only assume was a spot where a blown capacitor was. There was some film residue inside the thing along with some plastic wrapping. Very likely a cap. Now, just recently, a friend gave me his GSX 1200 model, basically the same thing with chat linking (what a gimmick) and said I could have it because it was broken. I checked and it was out of warranty by 3 months from his receipt date. 2 year warranty, 2.2 years old, EPOS denied to repair it. Took it apart, and the USB jack was broken on the inside. The legs of the jack separated from the PCB. I reflowed it with a heatgun and fresh solder, didn't fix it. Replaced the entire jack, fresh flux and solder, didn't fix it. Upon inspecting the original jack closely, I noticed there were two legs shorting, the 5V and Data. Probably blew out the integrated circuit. So it got me to thinking... I took my original GSX 1000 apart that amazingly I didn't throw away, and the legs of the USB port were also separating from the PCB and shorting. Probably explains the small explosion inside. Long story short, these things are garbage. Two models, produces 5 years apart, with the same problem with the micro-USB port. If they are going to charge $200 for a premium device at least go USB-C or something more durable. I wouldn't recommend this if it were $20 let alone $200. I replaced my broken GSX 1000 with a basic $60 USB DAC (which is USB A to USB B, much more durable) and it sounds just as good, has 7.1 simulation, and lacks the touch screen gimmicks and design that will definitely break. /end of rant

Sorry to say, I got the GSX 1000 and it is disappointing. The pre-sets don't fit me, the 7.1 is only "OK" in games where you don't need to hear where stuff is coming from. The sniper mode is a joke, you lose all quality and immersion is lost. I have paired this with Sennheiser GSP 601. Bass is to over-powered and not clean or fun to listen too. Music and Movies sound better in 2.0 mode. I got both for a fraction of the price and I am looking forward to better gear. 7.1 can be good, this unit is doing a terrible. Despite of what other people say. The pre-sets, well it depends on your headphones and your liking.

FPS mode is not meant to help your immersion, though? It's meant to help hear voices and foot steps... of course immersion is beyond secondary at that point.

@@regardie99 I do expect that from Sennheiser equipment in 2022. I am sure Sennheiser wants to give us the best sound quality they can. I can use an EQ app and my grandpa's headphone from the 70's to tune into voices and steps. My G930 did a better overall job compared to what this combo outputs. Thanks for your opinion.

I think it's the best virtual surround, hands down to this day. My preferred usage is 7.1 with music/movie/standard mode and maximum reverb. I agree the sniper mode sucks. Adjusting the surround sound direction emphasis helps quite a bit for footsteps, especially in "rear" or "none" mode. The surround sound direction emphasis in "front" mode is quite enjoyable for hearing a wider soundstage for a decrease in accuracy for things like footsteps. I enjoy taking my virtual surround onto KZread, and it works pretty well, particularly with reverb.

@@regardie99 If it's anything like other gaming DACs it probably boosts the mids and highs to make footsteps more discernible but at the cost of it being much more fatiguing and less pleasant to listen to.
