Senegal President's election delay triggers political crisis | DW News

To the outside world, Senegal has appeared to be one of West Africa's more stable democracies, at least until now. But internally, the political scene is in turmoil. The country was supposed to be having elections in just over two weeks time, but President Macky Sall, who was due to step down, instead postponed the exercise. And that's sparked anger.
In recent years, political protests have become more common in Senegal and human rights groups have accused the country's security forces of using excessive force to crack down on dissent. While the threat of violence awaits those taking to the streets, some Senegalese are also using art to express their grievances, as DW’s Sira Thierij reports from Dakar.

    True, and especially the Marabouts who refused to say or do anything about this abuse of power by an egoistic maniac. Macky would leave office whether he likes it or not. He will not be able to squander the democratic institution of Senegal because it was built on strong institutional arrangement thanks to the French colonial legacy.

    Wasn't the whole point of democracy to hold elections only if the voters are guaranteed to vote a certain way and, if not, then block not aligned parties through judicial and social pressure? The concept of democracy is really confusing :s

    @@arnaudpayet6173Yes because there is a pattern. France only condemns anything that affects their interests and at least 50% of France economic success is reliant on its former colonies failures. He is trying to tell you there is a pattern to France diplomacy. If you know, you know!

  • @phpn99
    @phpn993 ай бұрын

    There's a trend among Millennials in former French colonies to reject anything to do with France, as if the ills of their societies were entirely due to policies favouring the former colonial power. While a part of this is true, a substantial part of the current "de-colonial" narrative in West Africa, is feigning to ignore that the failures of their economies are largely due to native sociological factors. Corruption and "clientelism" are so deeply and so widely entrenched in African societies that no political regime has the ability to make any significant change. Change cannot possibly happen to people who reject their own responsibilities, fail to introspect their own cultures, and make a business of blaming others for their own failures. Still, every political opponent in West Africa has promised the exact opposite for the last 50 years - "If you vote for me, I will root out the abusers and I will change everything", they say - and invariably they default on their promises, become the next abusers. Easy "heroes" like Thomas Sankara only remained role models because they didn't live long enough to fail politically. So young Africans become extremely gullible political cannon fodder, and readily swallow the "Make Africa Great Again" populist tropes thrown at them by cult-of-the-personality figures such as Ousmane Sonko, whose thirst for power knows no end. In parallel, apparatchiks such as Macky Sall are, as is the cases in every republic on the planet, the keystone of a broad system of favouritism and grift, that embody both the "stability" of the system, and the "problem" of the system. It's a lose-lose situation for the young disenfranchised who are led to believe that "Africa is an Eldorado made poor by foreign thieves". Any educated examination of the facts easily proves this is nothing but wedge politics, often funded in the shadows by foreign powers bent on grabbing their own piece of the pie - Russia, China, Turkey, Qatar, etc. While it is likely true that countries using the CFA currency should break away from the Banque de France, the move will be extremely hard to live through, not because of France per se (or because imports from Europe will become a lot more expensive) but because robust currencies require robust socio-economic foundations. But breaking from these crutches is likely the only way those African states will be forced to assume their responsibilities and learn to owe up to their duties. West African nations badly need to industrialise and they need to develop their interior market ; be less reliant on imports. This is doable but those who advocate for this should a) tell the truth, and b) cease to polarise the issue with irresponsible ideas such as "white people bad". On the other side of the fence, France needs to stop its navel-gazing, self-serving and paternalistic policies, and rather than focus on "aid" should help African countries set themselves up to become truly autonomous. France has the bad habit of thinking of itself as indispensable and it often acts as a dope dealer. This has to stop. What's happening today in Senegal is NOT that democracy is threatened in Senegal - it's a more profound issue of generalised corruption. Senegal will have elections and will change political leaders - there's zero doubt about it - but the real problem is that in reality this won't change the real problems faced by millions of young jobless Senegalese, even if their guru Sonko, or the Prophet himself became king. No leader can change Senegal - for the nation to evolve, the Senegalese themselves need to change.

    Well said and thanks for the in-depth analysis of the political malaise facing not only Senegal but the Continent at large. The leaders have to be held accountable. The blaming game has been ongoing ever since. What is needed is the internal review/audit of the leaders who are corrupt and egoistic.
