Senecio macroglossus 'Variegatus' (Wax Ivy) Houseplant Care - 245 of 365
Wax ivy is a great alternative to English ivy, in case you're looking for a more hardy variety in your home. I wish I could have showed you my original specimen because it was HUGE, but it was one of the dozen or so plants that was eaten by the house mouse problem I had (which I now think I have under control). That tells me that this plant is probably "safe" around animals. But, this newish specimen will get large in now time and it's the 245th spot of "365 Days of Plants".
In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.

I always like it when you explain the taxonomy and ever-changing reclassifications. You are always sprinkling little gems of botanical knowledge in your vids and I appreciate that.
This is immensely helpful! I just got it today from an online seller who had labelled it Variegated English Ivy and I was doubtful of it being a Hedera Helix. Glad to have found your video while searching for tips on KZread. Thanks a ton!
Have not missed an episode 👍
It's amazing how it looks so much like ivy! When it blooms it almost looks like someone just put fake blossoms in between ivy leaves
I have struggled with mice a bit too. Having cats does help. There's a ping-pong ball cat toy that disappeared and I know it's in the ceiling because I can hear the mouse playing with it as it rolls around. Yes, mice do play and collect things.
I acquired this ‘flowering ivy’ a few months back and am still in the process of learning it’s care secrets. I’m going to plant it in a raised bed outdoors with other succulents and cactus. I think it will be cool as a scrambling ground cover that would visually knit together an eclectic planting. Supposedly it will take full sun. I’ll see.
Beautiful varigated plant . Love it 🤗
Happy New Year Summer Rayne! I enjoyed all of your plant videos, especially the travel episodes, and please keep up the good work - will you.
Amazing plant and a wonderful final video for the decade Summer! I have seriously enjoyed this year being subscribed to you and I cant wait to see what this year holds! Happy New Year🎉
I have always wanted the green version of this plant. Never could find one! It is a very pretty plant.
Love it!
OMG YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS my favorite plant people should stop sleeping on it. it's such a fast grower

I'm allergic to it

@@paddyodoor3090 Did you figure that out after getting it or is there something in or associated with the plant that was able to let you know that you are allergic before you had to even see/touch it? but FYI, it might be an interesting tidbit to mention that you're allergic to it and that is a reason for someone to be cautious before wanting to get this plant but your comment lacks any meaningful exposition before the main statement nor does it have any more substance to it. In some cases being curt and succinct can be appreciated but I think in this case your reply just comes off as haphazard and cold rather than the interesting tidbit it really could've been for people. It feels almost argumentative. I don't know if English is your native language and if you had English classes dealing with composition and literature, but it would benefit you to try to even read more so you could upgrade your communication skills.
Happy new year...
I have what was sold to me as a variegated Senecio mikanioides and it is so, so similar to what you have here. (The mikanioides is supposedly now Delairea odorata? Very confused on the names with these.) Whatever it’s called, this is absolutely one of my favorite plants in my collection. With its succulent leaves and purple stems - whoops petioles! - I don’t know why this plant isn’t more popular. It is really fun to watch it grow, even my variegated one is a very vigorous grower. Happy New Year! 🥂
Happy New Year 🌱🌵🌲
One of these is heading to me in the mail right now!
Happy New Year, Miss SRO! It's been an interesting journey around the sun for all of us and our plants. Funny thing about this plant is all my friends love it as an alternative to English Ivy which admittedly is problematic to grow indoors. However, in my particular culture it's more of a pain in the butt than English Ivy can ever hope to be! 🤷🏻
My mother’s favorite ivy.
my senecio macroglossus has a fun habit of wrapping itself around my alocasia zebrina and xanthosoma sagittifolium. keep it on the dry side near a bright window and it'll produce more new growth than you can handle.
Get some Grandpa Gus' mouse repellent pouches on Amazon. Contains peppermint oil which rodents don't like. You can also get a spray on Amazon which contains peppermint oil and spray around the house. Happy New Year!!
Pretty
I have this plant. It is easy to propagate and I like the succulent and waxy texture to it. Also, it is pest resistant.
😍 An easier alternative to ivy!? I gotta have it!!!
I think this plant is so neat. I want one, my local garden center has it. Large ones for 35 bucks. I’m still on the fence.... Are you going on any talk shows in 2020? Would love to know when. Will you put those episodes on your KZread channel?
It's very similar to Senecio angulatus but with more ivy-like (and variegated) leaves.

We need more love for Senecio angulatus, Senecio tamoides and Delairea odorata (previously known as Senecio mikonaides). Very underappreciated plants.
You were crystal clear on how to propagate, but I have a slight variation in the question. I have a new (6 month) plant and it has sent out only two vines that are hanging down and looking lonely. I want a denser overflow for a hanging plant. Should I take some cuttings and add them to the container or does the plant eventually send out many tendrils? Thanks.
Wow! maybe one I could grow without the problems of spider mites or mealy bugs, that is one of the reasons I don't buy Ivy's. Thanks again Summer, bye for now.
Until this moment I cared this plant thinking it to be English ivy 😭😭 Anyway I still love this plant n mine is gonna bloom I guess. I was about to research on ivy blooms but you said it blooms..😊👍
Hello. How do you correct wrong potting medium? I mistakenly used clay and rice hull as potting medium when i repotted cause i thought it needs to be constantly moist
i completely freaked when i came across this at Urban Jungle in Philly. i just had to have it. it’s gorgeous and it’s Hedera helix look with succulent vibes is just astonishing to say the least. i felt like a total nerd lol

Jord & His Plants cool! He would’ve loved it.
Cape Ivy(Senecio mikanioides) is also called ivy but a senecio! Interestingly, in Japan, Senecio macroglossus is called Cape Ivy...
My Senecio Macroglossus has white dots on his leaves which I can't wipe away. Do you have any idea what this is and how to get rid of it? I'm kind of desperate cause nobody can help me.
Does this plant have issues with spider mites, or other pests?
What does it mean if my leaves are curling out?
Is it the same as boston ivy
I also have dis plant...In india
I had it and it died from overwatering 😞
