Seneca Rocks, Dolly Sods & Blackwater Falls | Car Camping in West Virginia!

We finally got the chance to explore Seneca Rocks, Dolly Sods and Blackwater falls! West Virginia never disappoints when it comes to natural beauty. Watch to see our car camping fail lol
About me:
I am a 3rd year SRNA & ICU nurse. I went to nursing school to get my ADN, started working and then went back for my BSN. I was a travel nurse for 2 years before starting CRNA school. I loved travel nursing so much but I also love anesthesia so I went back to school to become a CRNA. I plan to continue my travel nursing career when I become a nurse anesthetist! Fitness is also a huge part of my life. I've competed in powerlifting and Crossfit. Jon and I own a gym together! We are also foster parents to dogs and (soon to be) children!

It’s a WV well known fact that if you smell cucumbers there’s a copperhead near by. As a little girl I’d be playing with friends, suddenly smell cucumbers, and told them all we needed to leave IMMEDIATELY. We’d run back in the house and get my Dad and he’d always find the snake.

So true. Copperheads do produce a smell similar to cucumbers. Like your dad..we always found the snake.

At the end of every summer Blackwater Falls hosts a public welcome astronomy meet. This year.... who knows. A good south bit of Seneca Rocks is the Green Bank Radio Observatory. The view from Seneca Rocks in the Fall can't be beat. You didn't mention the rocks are a rock climbing paradise. Climbers can be spotted from the valley floor every nice day and a lot of the bad ones.

Smokehole Caverns, Seneca Caverns, Spruce Knob our highest point in WV and the most beautiful drives through what's known as Germany Valley.

I am sure you are tired of confirmations on the cucumber thing.... lived in WV all our lives and have had it confirmed many times. We just bought our retirement camper, my wife is disabled and I am getting somewhat more mobile after a couple of surgeries. We could never climb Seneca Rocks, but we will do what we can with my wife's power chair. Getting out and having coffee in interesting places is our goal. Oh yeah, and vlogging about it on our disability travel channel. Great video!

We do this every spring stay there go fishing in the mornings 🌄 then get back to the cabins then go hiking 🏃 to the top. Then get back to eat some dinner 🍽 😋. The watch some tv and we stay there at the same time as March Madness the NCAA men's Basketball 🏀 tournament. So yeah all of us to gather having fun good times.🙂

To anyone visiting from out of state: Do Not ignore that warning sign and climb out onto the knife edge. The north edge was called the "face of 1000 pitons" because during WWII those rocks were used to train soldiers in rappelling, and the face is covered in thousands of piton holes and remaining soft iron pitons, rusting out. The face is not stable. A whole section called the Gendarme fell fairly recently, and there is no telling when another section could go. If you fall off that knife edge you are dead. Then it falls to our taxpayers to foot the bill to send Search and Rescue/Retrieval teams up the mountain to carry you down.

be careful when you're up there at dolly sods. On October 14, 1943, the U.S. Army began transforming parts of Dolly Sods into an artillery range. Troops from across the eastern United States were trained at what the Army named the “West Virginia Maneuver Area” in preparation for combat in World War II Many of the artillery and mortar shells shot into the area for practice still exist. In 1997, a highly trained crew surveyed the trail locations and known campsites for shells. They found 15, some of which were still live. I know the chances of you finding an unexploded shell or like astronomical but better safe the sorry. So yeah when you at Dolly Sods always stay on the paths don't wonder off.
