    These little plants are amazing! I call them forever plants. They just go on and on. Even in winter they flourish in my cold, Scottish garden. They’re so underrated.

    I live in Seattle where it rains like 9 months a year. We only get a full sun on mid spring to summer. I just left mine outside and they are doing great, I started with around 5 to 7 small pieces and now I have so many, they are huge now with a lot of babies!! 😊 Some of them are 5 to 6 inches wide. I had mine for like 5 years.

    I live in the only city in the US with a higher average annual rainfall than Seattle, and my semps are super happy. I potted them by filling concrete planters 3/4 full with marble chips, fill in the cracks with perlite, cut a piece of window screen and put it on top of the marble/perlite foundation, fill the rest with bonsai jack's gritty.

  • @TropicalPlantParty

    @TropicalPlantParty

    6 жыл бұрын

    I agree! I love Opuntias! I used to have tons of them, several varieties, mostly only missouri native. I had to get rid of them because the wind was blowing the glochids all over the place. Got to a point where stepping outside was like bathing in fiberglass. :( I miss them though! Still have a large clump in the front yard, and recently ordered a "spineless" variety that isn't fully hardy here, but want to try it anyway... I think it will still have glochids, but hopefully not as many. You just gave me a great idea! I have section of garden for the pollinators and birds that is mostly just natives, I might be able to squeeze an opuntia in there!

    You covered a lot about these little beauties. They surely do not like much water. I think I will stay with shallow dishes with them lots of grit. And yes they do seem to like to be in a bright window. It would be interesting to see where they grow in their native state. Florida is not their norm but they seem to be finding good spots to thrive in.

    Great video Jeff! I bought one of these back in March and it is now growing like crazy... Did I mention indoors?! So... today I started thinking, 'Do I need to replant this explosive plant into a bigger pot or just move it outdoors into the ground?' - Truth is I wasn't sure until now. I guess the light I am giving it in the window is adequate, but I will need to pull ou the mother hen once she blooms and goes to plant heaven! I could also easily take some pups and plant them outside! We don't typically go below 0 F° in the dead of winter, as I'm zone 7a, so this should be more than fine!

    I have these in pots out my garden in absolutely freezing Scottish weather and they look amazing! We had 3feet of snow this year and these little guys survived and thrived. Only one thing, the biggest of them had little mottled spots on the leaves. I wonder why? But they seem to be doing amazingly.

  • @TropicalPlantParty

    @TropicalPlantParty

    4 жыл бұрын

    They are so sturdy and tough! Spots and mottling can be from a lot of things, maybe some cold damage, sun damage, fungus(I wouldn't worry about that though) or the start of die off after flowering. Diff temps can influence the colors and patterns also.

    Tropical Plant Party Yeah you’re right it’s hilarious on those plant Facebook groups, someone puts a pic up to ask what’s happened to their plant, one says water, the other says not enough, one says nutrition deficiency, the other says not enough fertiliser 😂😂 I now just grow with my plants, adapt and adjust and simple logic normally wins! I’m growing some mimosa pudica (sensitive plant) at the moment, I have 6 and I’ve learned so much from learning about their original environment and going off instinct. That’s my way forward from now on 😂👉🏻

    Thank you so much, Aleah! Thats a smart way to keep that soil draining! I just let them spread and grow on their own. If i were going to pluck some off to replant, then i would go for pieces that were already somewhat attached to the soil and not still just tiny plants hanging off of the mother plant. :)

    Love your semps ! Gorgeous varieties and colors ! I have quite a lot of these myself. They’ve become a favorite. But this year , they’re rotting on me left and right cuz of all the rain . I use almost 50% pumice and have many in clay pots as well for evaporation . What mix do you use ? I’m guessing your mix is quite gritty since you’re in a humid area as well ? Or are you in a humid area ? I’m so sad to keep losing them because I paid a fortune for many of them . Some of the ones I’m losing are ones that were quite expensive and less common. They’re in temporary trays because I didn’t have time to plant them right away. And some needed to root . So I put them in a more rich soil . Big mistake. I hurt my back and got way behind on my plants for a few weeks. Now many are dead . I’m trying to repot them into 75% grit and 25%( or less ) Coco Loco potting mix . The Coco Loco helps em root well ! But it does retain lots of water . The ones in trays are 50-60% Coco Loco. This darn rain ! It’s rained almost daily here in TN for 3-4 weeks now. Thank you for the video. Love your videos 😊

    I got one of mine from Walmart too. I live in IL and um trying to make sure the weather outside is good for it. It rained, although I placed mine on a porch table away from the rain especially since I had already watered it. It's kind of cool outside this morning and damp. Will this harm my plant? I had placed the plant outside yesterday only because when I had it inside on the sun porch, when I returned from work after being gone for two days,. I saw one succulent looked waterlogged so I brought it inside. I think the humidity must have bothered it somehow sitting on the sun porch.? Then it happened to another one. "What's going on?" I asked myself. Well, I'm going to bring it back inside and see what happens. If you have any ideas, please let me know. Thanks and thanks for posting this video.

    Great video. I'm starting a succulent garden on a bank next to the house. (mostly sempervivums-love them!) My soil in upstste NY, is rocky clay so am adding pearlite for drainage. My question is about the soil surface: Can the leaves touch the dirt or should I put lava rock or gravel under the plants to keep the leaves above the dirt?

  • @TropicalPlantParty

    @TropicalPlantParty

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi Ann! I always prefer a layer of gravel in between my succulents and the soil, or even leaves. This just helps keep moisture from being in direct contact with the foliage. With Sempervivums, they can handle direct contact with leaves. In my garden i avoid it when i can because i mostly have oak and maple leaves which take a long time to decay and hold onto a lot of moisture.

    Thank you for the video I have a question and I'm hoping I can get an answer here. I live in Southern California, in a mountainous area, it dropped to about 30 degrees a few times. And stayed about 40 at night all winter...I have sempervivum I kept outside (cobweb houseleeks) and its babies didn't shoot off.. what it did was grew on the bottom almost smothering the hen...when I brought it inside where it was warmer they finally shot off however the arms/vines are much bigger than they should be. My younger chicks (now hens, I'm so proud😉) that had babies this year have the normal arms coming off of them everywhere but they are all inside and slowly growing me out of my own house.😂.. how cold is too cold for the hens and chicks? Sorry that was a long comment for such a short question

  • @TropicalPlantParty

    Hey Angie! Most varieties, including the cob web can handle extremely cold temps. Should be good into zone 5 which means a winter maximum low of -20F. I've seen them flourish up in Wyoming when it's single digits and relentless winds plus snow. Always good to check what hardiness zone the ones you specifically grow can handle, some aren't as cold tolerant. ... that was a long way of saying, they do great in the cold😆

    Sometimes when i edit a video, i can hardly hear the background music at all, but then it gets uploaded to youtube and processed and the music is way too loud. The opposite happens too, a lot of videos i can't even hear the music that were perfectly audible when editing. idk! Technology is annoying sometimes! :/

    Question, if I plant one of these in a large, shallow pot and it puts our hens, do I cut them off and or can you leave them alone to get the look you have with these? Newbie here.

    Hello! Definitely best to just leave them. They'll fill out wonderfully!

    You said "if you live north of zone 8, choose Echeveria" Don't you mean if you live SOUTH of zone 8? Echeveria like more warmer zones.
