Seminar with Joseph Shulam (The Relevance of the Rabbinical Jewish Material Mishnah and Talmud)

Seminar: Panel Discussion with Joseph Shulam
“The Relevance of the Rabbinical Jewish Material (Mishnah and Talmud) for a Better Understanding of Jesus and His Disciples”
The Lanier Theological Library is inviting scholars and patrons to a free panel discussion on Friday, February 7, from 2:30 - 4:00 pm, in our chapel. This panel discussion precedes the library's lecture on Saturday night by Joseph Shulam. Registration for the Saturday lecture is separate from this panel.
This 90-minute session on Friday will feature a panel made up of these five participants.
Joseph Shulam, Hebrew Scholar and Christian Minister, Jerusalem
Bruce Chilton, Bernard Iddings Bell Professor of Religion; Executive Director, Institute of Advanced Theology, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY
Craig Evans, John Bisagno Distinguished Professor of Christian Origins, Houston Baptist University, Houston, TX
Michael Vowell, Rabbi at Beth El Shalom, Sugar Land, TX
David Capes, Moderator, Senior Research Fellow, Lanier Theological Library
Everyone agrees that the Old Testament and the intertestamental literature are important to interpreting the New Testament. Fewer may acknowledge the importance of the Jewish literature gathered and written after the first century AD. What is the Mishnah? The Talmud? The Gemara? How can they help modern Christians better understand the Gospels or the writings of Paul the apostle? Come to this panel discussion and learn about resources you may not have valued before.

Dr. Craig Evans was one of the teachers and guides in a tour called Footsteps of Paul hosted by Living Passages touring company, which is based out of Coeue d'Alene Idaho. He gave superb speeches that better explained several locations and the history surrounding the events that we read about in the Bible. As for me, I only attended the Israel land portion of the tour, but even in the shorter version of the overall tour, Dr. Evans was an honor to have along. He and Ginny sat on the bus that I was assigned to for the whole time there.

I love this Rabbi Shulem he reminds me so much of my dad oh I can hear him like he was in the room, miss him dearly. You tell em Rabbi! You tell em! I remember reading Jeremiah 10 about 10,12 yrs back and heard clearly the paganism of Christmas, clearly and wondered what in the world??? Why would anyone celebrate this paganistic holiday? Why haven't the churches taught how wrong this is and now I truly understand why we were not allowed any celebration of Christmas growing up or Easter and definitely not Halloween LoL but my dad passed away 2012 and my mom and dad had me and my baby brother later in life 40 and my dad was in the Holocaust w/my Best amor and Bestafar and I remember the horrible tales and I how heartbreaking but their""" trying to deny this part of history I've heard many comments on YT quoting that this never happened until I became part of the conversation and I like your wonderful women at the synagogue of Yeshua Hamashiach let it rip tator chip" . Well I am very grateful for you and to be antisemitic and believing in Yeshua is a contradiction in terms and it really pi....me off but I believe you and the women there can set em completely straight and I remember telling people the Lord won't even hear their songs being sung at Christmas that it's a straight out mammon worship holiday and piling more junk on top of junk we do not need and of course even when I read the Scripture to many they still get irate. The Lord is clear about His people celebrating His Sabbath's and feast days and the one's who would not change Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday literally lost their lives over this. Many, many very important Word's especially the ones in red the Laodicia" church doesn't know or care to know these days for they follow too many wolves in sheep's clothing instead of reading and allowing the Holy Spirit to teach them into all truth. Shalom Rabbi Shalum and the rest of you fellas Shalom!

When the Book of Job is read, we have the WHOLE story, from every point of view. In the text, observe the restraint the Lord as He listens in, as He hears the the testimony of all these "men of old" - TALKING BEHIND HIS BACK! (AND He has just finished passing judgment on the ancient world!) Yet, finally the Lord God interrupts the conversation and proceeds to correct Job for his presumptiousness. But before the Lord finishes and sits down, we know of whom it is that He commends, and of whom He disapproves. He hears ALL of our words and He knows the meditations of ALL our hearts.

For several reasons. Because it is preserving material from even before the first century, for one. Also, it’s helpful to see the development of certain legal debates and customs, etc. as it allows us to see where the NT is situated within that process of development. Many of Jesus’ discourses with the Pharisees in the Gospels make more sense and have more context behind them when one considers the rabbinic material. Another benefit is in terms of language. Mishnaic Hebrew scholarship has solidly demonstrated that Hebrew was still a common spoken language in the first century in the land and have traced the language diachronically through its development in both spoken/colloquial and written registers at the time. This is an enormous benefit to NT studies because it allows for massive insights into Jesus’ language, the development of the Synoptic Gospels, and much more, including Pauline studies. Knowing more of the language background assists in uncovering meanings of terms and passages which would otherwise not be understood or even go unnoticed. Hundreds of rabbinic story parables, for example, ALL in COLLOQUIAL, (“low”-register) Hebrew with ZERO in Aramaic inform us to be looking for Hebraic elements to Jesus’ parables rather than Aramaic as has been assumed in NT scholarship. This also allows for more confidence in the historicity of Gospel texts since, for example, it was common for rabbinic story parables to have a concluding verse as a part of the parable. Critical scholarship on the Gospels, however, has assumed that if any of Jesus’ parables have a concluding verse that such a verse must have been appended later on by the Greek church. Comparing rabbinic story parables with those of Jesus tells us that such a theory is baseless and that the summary verse is most likely part of the original parable. The NT also is a first-witness to several rabbinic practices which only later show up in rabbinic literature. This shows there is continuity between the NT and rabbinic literature and lends more credence to the idea that the Mishna and Talmud can be helpful for NT studies even though they didn’t get written down until after the NT was written. Our best and most complete NT witnesses aren’t from the first century either, so there’s really not as much of an issue as many have supposed. On top of all that, it’s even helpful to see where Judaism went much later on certain rulings and practices because some of Jesus’ positions on certain issues were also reached by rabbis that lived later on. In addition, and very interestingly, later Ḥasidic Jewish material and practice finds much similarity to content in the NT, so much so, in fact, that it is enlightening to compare the two because there are probably some threads there that, if unraveled, would help us understand the NT much better from a “mystical” Jewish point of view. Another benefit in material that comes even much later than the NT is that sometimes some later Jewish texts are preserving a very old midrash or some other element that is so similar to something else in the NT that it almost certainly represents a common thread that didn’t happen to be documented prior to that time, rather than a later Jewish borrowing from the NT.

That most Jews reject Jesus today is a FACT, not an attitude or a "bias" against them. Only a minority of Jews believe in Jesus. They have their reasons for this. Messianic Jewish believers often experience hostility from other Jewish groups in Israel. This is not to deny that antisemitism exists, or to agree with it in any way. It is a true statement that Jews that believe in Yeshua are "not like most of the Jews".

In the Torah doesn't it show that God will use the enemies of Israel to reprove the disobedience of the people of the laws that Moses gave from Mt. Sinai? It is my opinion that Anti-Semitic sentiment is in itself a form of judgement from God to them who disobey and pervert the Word of God. It's a sad and unfortunate thing that so many are led away to idols by cruel rulers who oppress and exploit the weak, the poor, and the cause of the widow. Jesus himself today would be labeled a self-hating Jew after his indictments and prophecies in chapters 22, 23, and 24 of Matthew's gospel.

Your statement has a tinge of anti-Semitism in it. They did follow the Torah, but they neglected important parts of the Torah that they shouldn’t have neglected. But Yeshuaʿ there is talking about the Pharisees, not the priests, most of whom at that time were Sadducees. I’m not sure what exactly you meant in saying the Jews today in Israel are “converts and not the true Israelites.” That sounds like Replacement Theology. Paul wrote in Romans: “THEY ARE Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the Torah, the worship, and the promises. The fathers are theirs, and from them, by physical descent, came the Messiah. God who is over all be blessed forever. Amen.” (Rom 9:4-5) If you’re saying most Jews today aren’t real Israelites because they are converts to Judaism, you don’t understand Judaism or the Bible. Converts to Judaism have always been accepted into Israel as “true Israelites.”

I disagree gently and boldly with Dr Joseph Shulam stating " Christian" word is of Constantine era and their after. He says Paul and other Apostles never called themselves as Christians. My careful study of the WORD of Elohim, The entire Epistles and Book of Acts significantly proclaims their faith in Christ, their lives and witness shows clearly that they demonstrated themselves as Christians . Look these following quotes from the New Testament : (Rom 8:9 MKJV) But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone has not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His. Apostle Paul states being a Christian signifies with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit ,otherwise he affirms we are not of Him ( which means our union with Christ spiritually endorses and seals us as Christians) Act_11:26 And finding him, he brought him to Antioch. And it happened to them a whole year they were assembled in the church. And they taught a considerable crowd. And the disciples were first called Christian in Antioch. Look this verse in Book of Acts, disciples are called as Christian. during this time Apostles are alive and including Apostle Paul. So it is not from Constantine era which was in 4th century. finally let us look the proclamation of King Agrippa before Paul! Act_26:28 And Agrippa said to Paul, Do you persuade me to be a Christian in but a little? If Paul could persuade Agrippa to be a Christian, as other Apostles and Disciples were enduring for the Gospel to bring the Jews and Gentiles to be Christian . This is not a religious Christianity of Constantine era. How can some one persuade other to be a Christian ( we do the same now as a Born again Believers in our Mission) without being Christians themselves? Nevertheless, I appreciate his great insight and experience in the Ministry for Hebrews. Shalom Crispin Salem, Tamilnadu, India # i do live in Russia and do ministry among the jews and Russians last several years along with my secular job.Incidentally my focus is Jews First and Russians next. # Incidentally some of my paternal ancestors are Jewish and lived in India ( southern and western India). crispino121@gmail.com

the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. does not mean that the disciples called themselves Christian then. When Paul describes himself in court he says he is a follower of the way. which is regarded as a sect within Judaism. the statement by Agrippa using the term is also no evidence the disciples used the term for themselves. Christian was used as a derogatory term in the first century. It may not have been as long as the time of Constantine but it was after the first century when believers embraced the name. Paul no where calls himself a Christian. we see him as such in hindsight but he always sees himself as a Jew who believes in Messiah/Christ the anointed one. He is a Benjaminite, a Pharisee who believes in the resurrection. to prove your point you need to look at what Paul says he is in his dialogue with others. The term Christian he never uses to describe himself. that is what Joseph Shulam is saying and in that he is correct.

  • @hebrewgreek7420

    @hebrewgreek7420

@fleetwd1 is correct. In addition, Joseph Shulam is also saying Christianity as a religion did not exist in the NT (not just the term ‘Christian’ as a self-designation) since sociologically one can analyze the NT and find that it is Jewish in nature and not “Christian.” All throughout Acts they are meeting in the Jerusalem Temple and in synagogues on the Sabbath in every city and celebrating the biblical festivals and using those holidays as time markers for the events of the book. Acts 11:26 may also be referring to the name of a synagogue in Antioch, as the city had a large Jewish population with 20-30 different synagogues in the city. It may have been called “synagogue of the Christians/Messianics” like “synagogue of the Freedmen” in Acts 6:9.

Shulam is not a Rabbi neither represents Judaism or the Jewish people from Israel. He is a fundamentalist traditional Christian pastor of an evangelical Christian church in Jerusalem. Similar to the Catholics and Greek Orthodox in his trinitarianism. The fact that he worships as a god a Jewish Rabbi of the first century, Jesus of Nazareth, is enough reason to question his misinterpretation of the Tanakh. He is entertaining his financial supporters in these presentations. Why they did not invite an Orthodox Jewish Rabbi to present one of the perspectives in our communities?

I'll bet you didn't even listen till the end. He is nothing of the sort you are claiming. Have you ever been to their synagogue? He's not a christian but a messianic jewish scholar, a rabbi. Of course Israel doesn't accept him as such because Israel as a nation is living in apostasy. The trauma from killing the Messiah is still fresh. The official Israel cannot even say his name correctly: you say Yeshu instead of Yeshua with ayin in the end. In Israel you can believe in anything and retain your jewish indentity officially, you can believe, e.g. that Buddha is the messiah and that's ok - you are still a jew. But, ya rabb il3aalamiin, if you believe in Yeshua as the Messiah, you are not a jew anymore. How screwed up is that?

The God of the Bible was the God of Israel only. Christ was for Israel Only. Not for anyone today. HERE ARE JUST A FEW ISRAEL ONLY (IO) PROOF TEXTS THAT REFUTES MODERN DAY CHRISTIANITY Luke 1:16 “And he will turn many of the CHILDREN OF ISRAEL to the Lord their God.” Luke 1:33 “And JESUS will reign over the HOUSE OF JACOB FOREVER, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” Luke 1:54-55 “He has helped His servant ISRAEL, In remembrance of His mercy, 55 As He spoke to our fathers, To ABRAHAM and to his SEED forever.” Luke 1:68 “Blessed is the Lord GOD OF ISRAEL, For He has VISITED and REDEEMED HIS PEOPLE,” Luke 1:77 “To give knowledge of SALVATION to HIS PEOPLE By the REMISSION of their SINS,” Matthew 1:21 “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will SAVE His people from their SINS.” Matthew 2:6 ‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, Are not the least among the rulers of Judah; For out of you shall come a RULER Who will SHEPHERD MY PEOPLE ISRAEL.’ ” Acts 5:31 “Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and SAVIOR, to give repentance to ISRAEL and FORGIVENESS of SINS.” Acts 13:23 “From this man’s seed, according to the PROMISE, God raised up for ISRAEL a Savior--Jesus--“ Matthew 15:24 “But JESUS answered and said, “I was sent ONLY to the lost sheep of the house of ISRAEL.”

Proof texting is an attempt to prove a point of view. often it neglects texts that suggest a nearly opposite point of view. by this method people can prove about anything. Scripture reveals the mind of God and communicates in Paradoxes. a paradox appears to be contradictory. But when both points of view are accepted together it prevents a proof texting method to be accepted as the only view of Scripture. Be wise when evaluating posts do they show the paradox God intends.

@@fleetwd1 so perhaps, embedded in the paradox you are gently highlighting...is there a question? And could that question,if seriously engaged...produce an answer that could bridge the opposition with a creative third alternative? One that both explains why there exist two widely varying camps--and --what the potential of a resolution between those two divergent camps will engender? Diaspora. Machanayim. Bayit/Mishkan David. Ezekiel 37 And in my life... The question became the answer...when it finally came together with my willingness to lay down being "right" in what i already thought i "knew". 3 words were the key to the lock. When the door opened: light poured in. "WHO. IS. ISRAEL?" and..."What-That-Means" Blessings in the Name of Our King and His Kingdom Thank you for this wonderful offering,Sir @fleetwd1 Shalom

@@debrabates4630 lets look at Matthew 15:24 “But JESUS answered and said, “I was sent ONLY to the lost sheep of the house of ISRAEL.” in Context we see while Jesus states this perhaps to test the Gentile woman, we find it shows where he said elsewhere "I have more sheep not of this sheep pen." The paradox is here revealed “I was sent ONLY to the lost sheep of the house of ISRAEL.” is a true statement but so is "I have other sheep not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice." John 10:16. these two statements seem contradictory but both are true. Scripture is filled with these. Truth is revealed not by holding only one side, but both sides. appreciate your attitude. Shalom When you see all Israel is made up of all nations who have the faith of Abraham the paradox is resolved. Jesus is the promised seed to Abraham who will bless all nations through Abraham. The John 10L16 text ends "Then there will be one flock, one shepherd." the wall of partition is removed in Messiah.
