    I'd say risk adverse. Suprised they didn't try powering it with nuclear energy somehow, because the 50s and 60s just were... Quite insane with nuclear energy. What the hell was the range on that thing? Like you just ejected from your jet, probably compressing your spine. Then you have Vietcon coming down on you, but wait! Salvation! A helicopter drops a helicopter! So you put together your helicopter just in time since they saw the air drop. Get in as they are bearing down. Say, "ah ha! Not TODAY SUCKERS!" As you evade AK 47 rounds. Off in the horizon they see you run out of gas, and crash for the second time in 30 minutes...

    @Lord_Ronin_The_Compassionate

    2 ай бұрын

    The “James Bond” contraption, which I seem to recall being named “Little Nellie” was a gyro-copter and didn’t need anything but a pusher-propellor and that was the engines only job. You could take off from a small piece of ground, even shorter if you hand spin the rotors first and any forward motion caused by the propeller would cause the air to spin the rotors faster until the second you pull on the stick and up you go. The only negative is that unless you’re flying into a strong headwind then hovering above a fixed position is extremely buttock clinching, yet compared to helicopters they are incredibly easy to fly, such that if the engine stops the rotors will continue to spin (think sycamore seeds) and if you maintain a specific AoA then you won’t crash. Another nice feature is that because the rotors aren’t attached to an engine there no need for a tail rotor. With all the weight saved vs that of this helo as well as it’s far quieter engine and prop noise from the rotor tips they’re probably a better choice for a downed airman, provided you have a few clear space in front to get the ground speed up to requirements. The guy that built the James Bond version could be seen at airshows flying side saddle as there were no pedals necessary, unless you count the foot plates which double up as brakes and there’s no tail rotor to mess with.

    You can buy the plans to build your own. The original design was just for a very simple helicopter that anyone could build at home. The military was interested and they tried slightly larger versions based off of the original. It’s a fun helicopter, I built and own one. The main thing is, nothing is made to be used as a helicopter, so everything wears out fast. I replace bearings in everything but the engine every 5 hours. Anything that moves should be checked thoroughly before every flight. 3 hours of work to fly for 20min.

    Yeah, I would have to agree with the comment above mine. As someone who been in the military, amd experienced combat, he is right. I know if I was all alone, with enemy closing in on me, I was absolutely jump in that little thing and take my chances in the air. Without any hesitation or even a second thought. Even I could just fly it for 5 or 6 minutes at the top speed, that would be more than enough to get me a good several miles away and closer to friendly lines, and avoid capture. In a situation like that, being able to cover a few miles in just 5 or 6 minutes would be like having a superpower miracle.
