I was writing a cookbook and checked out an editor based in Portland OR. Her charge was $22 an hour. I decided to check her out. She was excellent. After a few years she raised her price to $40 an hour but I had no hesitancy in paying her. I’ve now got to figure out how to get this online for others to download for a nominal donation. I have a charity that I plan to donate the proceeds to.

In my experience, writing a book is a multi-year project, much like building a house. Some books can be written more quickly, but I tend to write heavily researched reference guides. :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/g4t_ssusqdreprw.html
To succeed as a writer, is it still mandatory to be an alcoholic like Hemingway, or a depraved drug addict, like Hunter S. Thompson? Which would you recommend? Thanks!

All the print-on-demand books that I've seen have been super poor quality.

That used to be the case, yes, but print quality has greatly improved. I publish Green Prosperity and five of my mother's books with IngramSpark. :)
