Even if the soul wasn't just a thought formation you still wouldn't be able to call it "I" unless you can claim to be its actor. Creation is OM which is action and free agency is by definition separate action. It IS separateness.

I strongly disagree with Michael James' assertion that verse 2 of Ekatma Panchakam refutes Ramana Maharshi's early, exacting essay on self-enquiry (Nan Yar). Listener, be aware... what James is offering here is his own teaching--not Ramana Maharshi's. For your own informed opinion please spend time with both Nan Yar, and importantly, Guru Vachaka Kovai, edited by David Godman (NOT the Michael James translation and commentary. I have both.) Better yet, compare and make your own choice. Bhagavan Ramana himself said that GVK was the one accurate stating of his philosophy. 1254 gems. It's surprising to me that James could spend all that time with GVK and come away with this unorthodox interpretation of self-enquiry.
