Self Enquiry - By Swami Sarvapriyanandaji

Swami Sarvapriyanandaji speaks on Self Enquiry
How shall we know the knower? The Vedanta says, "We are It, but can never know It, because It can never become the object of knowledge." Modern science also says that It cannot be known. We can, however, have glimpses of It from time to time. When the delusion of this world is once broken, it will come back to us, but no longer will it hold any reality for us. We shall know it as a mirage. To reach behind the mirage is the aim of all religions. That man and God are one is the constant teaching of the Vedas, but only few are able to penetrate behind the veil and reach the realisation of this truth.

Ramana said that Self- enquiry is for those who are endowed with a sattvic mind , which are a minority on earth. The same said Swami Sivananda, that the practice of the 'Who am I' enquiry is for very few. This is my experience as well. I was prepared for 15 years to be ready to start practicing Advaita vedanta and although I was prepared I had difficulties.

Don't know about Shivananda. But Bhagwan Raman didn't thought what you are saying. Below are his actual words from his book "Who am I" "However great a sinner one may be, if instead of lamenting and weeping ‘I am a sinner! How am I going to be saved?’ one completely rejects the thought that one is a sinner and is steadfast in Swarup Dhyanam, one will certainly be reformed" In fact Bhagwan said on many occasions that the quest of self in itself is a purifying process.

@@rahulkeney5354 Dear Rahul,. To understand the teachings of Ramana and any other guru as well, it is necessary to read and reflect and practice for a long time. In the dialogues below Ramana answers very clearly that Self- Enquiry is not for all while in the quote you mentioned doesn't focus on this subject precisely. QUOTES Question: “is it possible for all people to hold on to that path of self-enquiry?” Answer: Bhagavan: “It is true that it is only possible for mature minds, not for immature ones. For the latter, repetition of a prayer or holy name under one’s breath (japa), worship of images, breath-control (pranayama), visualising a pillar of light (Jyotishtoma) and similar yogic and spiritual and religious practices have been prescribed. By those practices, people become mature and will then realize the Self through the path of Self-enquiry. ~ Extract from “Letters of Bhagavan” Sri Ramana maharshi. //////// Question: Can this path of enquiry be followed by all aspirants? Answer: This is suitable only for the ripe souls. The rest should follow different methods according to the state of their minds. ~ Extract from “Spiritual instructions” Sri Ramana maharshi. /////// 763. Only to such a mind which has gained the inner strength of one-pointedness, Self-enquiry will be successful. But a weak mind will be like wet wood put into the fire of jnana-vichara. ~ Extract from “Guru vachaka kovai” talks of Sri Ramana maharshi ///// "If you are a student of Vedanta or Jnana yoga you will have to equip yourself with the four means of salvation (Sadhana Chatushtaya). You will have to do Sravana, Manana and Nididhyasana. Then only you will attain Brahma Sakshatkara." "A student who treads the path of Truth must, therefore, first equip himself with Sadhana Chatushtaya - the "four means of salvation". They are discrimination, dispassion, the sixfold qualities of perfection, and intense longing for liberation - Viveka, Vairagya, Shad-Sampat and Mumukshutva. Then alone will he be able to march forward fearlessly on the path. Not an iota of spiritual progress is possible unless one is endowed with these four qualifications.” ~ by Sri swami Sivananda The majority needs preparation in order to practice solely Self-enquiry or Meditation successfully. Any other idea has nothing to do with reality. This is what Atman says.

It's emptiness appearing as everything. It's unified appearing as divided or separated. “Unknowable” is indivisible, all-encompassing, everything without position or perspective, no inside, no outside, not two, not separate, non-dual. The undifferentiated everything can appear as something, a perspective, an apparent position. A position can be experienced, making the appearance seem personal. As a personal experience, life appears to be an object or “a something” requiring meaning, purpose, and justification. However, the person is illusory and has no reality outside of its experience of itself. The search for meaning is a need that arises out of that experience, which is the experience of separation. The person cannot go beyond the illusory nature of itself and cannot help being an effect of itself as a seeker. Will any amount of hammering by us here break the mountains in the dream? or How could be the delusion of this world broken in the dream? I-center apparent life energy came into existence because it wants to exist forever and same I-center is trying to dissolve itself that why it is impossible to dissolve using self-practice and methods unless it dissolves itself. understand that I am is not real but apparent and if we take it to be real then we can't explain anything in singularity.

We don't experience any mind to perceive the eyes. This is an assumption not something we actually experience. What actually we experience is this: I experience my eyes and as I we mean the body because we feel that we are the body. So, me, as a body-me or I, I experience my eyes.

This is mayavadi philosophy, this philosophy can not satisfy the heart, It can only satisfy the intelectual mind, but one can not awake devotion through this path, and without devotion there is no way to attain liberation, there is nothing wrong with what this monk is saying, the problem is that he is ignoring GOD. KRISHNA is the ultimate goal of life, we are meant to love and be loved, with the theory of this monk is imposible to develop pure love for GOD... we must to love GOD through his holy name, GOD is not diferente from his holy name.

  • @ds86496

No he is not ignoring.. watch his talks on bhakti path.. those talks are illuminating also..Krishna Bhakti is the ultimate path, but because of vaishnava aparadham and nam aparadham it takes million of births to attain suddha bhakti..bhakti also does not take away suffering, it adds the suffering of yearning for god to the material nature.. it's very hard path with all the rituals and having blind faith to a entity which we have not seen..
