I just used mine last week. One tip I would add is to do this on a spring type day. I open all the windows to ventilate the house. It can really heat up the house quickly and helps keep the odor down. My oven has a timer of 4 hours and 2o minutes. I absolutely love it!!! Also, a mistake I learned years ago is that you should wipe the ashes down with a dry rag or paper towel after, not a wet one.

Degree of use = frequency of using self-clean feature, IMHO. After years of owning a self-cleaning oven of one type or other, I've found this feature quite useful in spite of the bit of smoke or smell that can result. I simply turn on the overhead ventilator and go about with my other chores. I run the self-cleaning cycle only once a year and always in the cold of winter so that the heat created is actually a welcome side effect rather than a drain on the A/C unit. BTW... no need to remove the oven's lightbulb. Great vid and thanks a bunch for the info.

I love them, too. But certain models have motherboards that are easily fried from too much self cleaning. They just can’t take the heat.

@t watts This is true, I've found out the hard way. Once. Now I just point a fan set on low at the control panel area. That reduced the temperature from "too hot to hold your finger on for more than a few seconds" to "barely over room temperature."

I bought my home, came with a self cleaning oven, turned it on, and the insulation from the oven caught on 🔥. I got a new oven and I am currently running the self cleaning cycle but I have honest I am on high alert. Hence why I can here for some reassurance. 🤗

It’s amazing and just how hot the oven gets. I had to take everything off the stove just as a precaution. Also turn on the fan and open the door or window. Also remember to take out the racks in anything inside of course. I had to stop the first time after about 10 minutes because I realized the racks were still in there.

Thanks for the tip of applying the paste on the oven glass door AND then leaving it overnight to do its job. I am going to do that today and I also put the same paste on the glass top of the electric stove and will clean it off tomorrow when I clean the inside of the oven and door. My oven comes with specially treated wire racks that can be left inside the oven when the self-cleaning cycle is working. No more soaking the racks in the bathtub! It's a nice feature.

This was very informative! Good to know that your smeg didn't have much more info in their manual as our Samsung. Some friends have mentioned putting a bowl of water in there to steam it. I'm highly averse to doing that because it introduces a foreign item into the environment. But I'd like some insight.

excellent video. I have a Normende self clean oven. It is just 7 months old. I'm keen to keep it in pristine condition. @James Duff, I totally agree. Don't let the oven get too dirty before doing a self clean. I did a test pyrolytic clean around 2 months after purchase. I wasn't really sure what I was doing and was concerned about the smell. Now that I'm more comfortable with the features of the oven I'm giving it another go. My oven has a 1 or 2 hour pyrolytic cycle. I made sure this time to clean the oven out first. just a rinse down with washing up liquid and water and a sponge scourer for some stubborn black specks. To be honest, its not super dirty. Just these annoying black specks which are hard to get off manually. This time I want to get the small black stubborn specks which probably come from grease splashing around the oven during grilling. I have a carbon monoxide detector beside the oven while it is on self clean and I have kept the extractor fan on full and also the windows open. I think it's a great feature to have with an oven. Yes, there is a smell, but it's bearable. The self clean is nearly finished and I can see the annoying black specks turning white. I'm happy. www.appliancesonline.com.au/article/pyrolytic-ovens-buying-guide/ recommend doing a self clean every 10th time you use your oven.

Very helpful video. My Miele pyrolytic oven looks as good as new after its clean. The secret is to perform the pyrolytic clean monthly. My electrician told me I wasn’t cleaning it enough ( which was like once a year 🫢) . It was pretty dirty. Cleaning it out gently with a glass scraper got it ready for a proper clean. That’s how I clean the glass too. I’d highly recommend a pyrolytic oven…you won’t believe just how clean the result will be.

I placed the dial on clean and pulled the clean lever to the right and locked it. A red light went on as well as the oven light. The clock time was set automatically at 4:00 o’clock and is decrementing Now at 1:23 and still going down. I do not have a fan in my basement. Is it processing correctly or is there a way I can stop the process?

I guess all ovens vary. I have an electric Siemens. I no longer clean the glass door first because you get streaks and also water runs inside the glass and then it's impossible to get it clean unless the glass is removed. I find it cleans up lovely on its own and all I do is wipe some Flash liquid over afterwards. It seems a bit mad that you can't leave the shelving and racks in when you self-clean. It's very frustrating as my sink is not big enough for the shelves and cleaning is not easy. I have never experienced any odours and I have never ventilated the room. It just gets hot, so it's quite nice to do it on a cold winter's day. I just leave it to do it's job. I am not around when it's on. I am wondering about the different levels of heat. My oven has 1, 2 and the highest setting, 3. I always set it at 3, but wonder if I cleaned more frequently and set it at 1 I could leave the shelves and racks in or does it get to the same temperature, but for less time? What does it do to the shelves and racks?

Hi! Your video is very informative. I love it. However I do have a question that I can’t seem to find the answer to. So I had my oven for 5 years now and my hubby was worried how we’re gonna get rid of the greased that he had spilled from a broiler tray that was in the oven that we think might of spilled into where the fire is. So I decided to use the self cleaning button and now my House is filled with smoke and had to use to another fan to help with the fire detectors going off. So my question is, is it normal and safe to have this much smoke from an oven not being for 5 years? 😂 I have the windows open to help too. My fan vent sucks by the way. 😂 Any advice for the future would be appreciated. Thanks in advanced. ☺️

Is it actually better to use chemically based product instead? The odors and heat drove me straight into this question. It’s the middle of summer, air conditioner is obviously expensive, running God knows how many electrons with the heat at 400 on top of the AC on: It just seems like we’re speeding up the dials on the electric meter. Which ironically uses up a tiny bit of energy. And lastly the politicians are screaming about global change. By the way, I absolutely love the accent. Been to London about three times or so and strangely enough I wasn’t overwhelmed by the people speaking. Very polite for the most part and lovely humans to be around. Cheers, Bill. Oh yeah, if you’re from Australia, same. One last thing. You meant to say 400 to 500 degrees Celsius? Ouch

    @tommylarson7219 Жыл бұрын

If you are like most Americans, you will not clean a self cleaning oven by hand before you run it through the self cleaning feature. The self-cleaning feature will take several hours and will spill out an odor that you should ventilate with the exhaust fan and an open window. If your oven is filthy at the start, you can expect the burning odor and even possible flames because the oven will heat to more than 800 degrees F. If flames do appear, immediately turn oven off, and wait until it to cool so you can wipe out any mess before resetting the self cleaning oven feature. You should NOT leave the house after starting this feature because you want to be home in the event of flames. Ventilate your kitchen well from the start of the cycle!

@@GeorginaBisbyDIY I'm afraid Mr Muscle is a very high proportion of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide), one of the things which will etch glass, and that's really all the enamel finish of the oven is. The surface is damaged, but others might have suggestions as to what might make it look better; problem is; it has to be a solution that can withstand further treatments of pyrolytic temperatures. :(

This is a late comment, but make sure when you transfer the food in the oven, you’re not opening the oven door wide open and leaving it open. The heat escapes, and your oven will quickly cool. The oven thermometer can sometimes be dodgy, but the fact that you have two separate thermometers must be accurate. I don’t understand why it would take 15 min to increase 50 degrees, maybe your oven is old?

Interesting that self-cleaning ovens still make folks nervous in UK. We lived there from 2002 to abt 2011. We were surprised to find self-cleaning ovens almost unknown in the Highlands. They were about as common in Highland Scotland as were garbage disposals and large fridge freezers! Yet Brit adults and youngsters were more keen to own mobile phones than were Americans then. British telly taught us about and induction cooktops (hobs) and underfloor heating though. Brilliant way to cook and keep warm. And darn it! Induction hobs are still not well accepted here. We are close to being ready to renew our 1970s kitchen soon. Can’t find induction hobs in builder and appliance stores. Merchants stopped featuring them because customers wouldn’t buy them. Further, American induction cooktop makers don’t get the reliable ratings European manufacturers earn. Back to my surprise that self-cleaning ovens are considered dangerous in UK. Just the opposite here in USA. Buyers expect ovens to be self-cleaning. My first such oven was about 1974. Our present oldish home built in 1972 still has its original self-cleaning wall oven. Bless it’s electronics. It cleans as well in 2020 as it did in 1972. It goes from black and crusty to wipe away gray ash every time with zero concern about going to bed or going out while it cleans. Funny how we are all so much alike yet still tend to differ as to firmly set cultural beliefs. I thought it odd to find switches on all our electrical outlets in Scotland and to heat with kerosene instead of natural gas. We lived in Tain where the community turned down the opportunity to switch to public natural gas because the city father’s believed natural gas extremely dangerous. While here in USA Americans are fearful of induction cooktops and most of us get suckered into buying a secondary ($$) foundation under our mattresses instead of relying on bed rails alone. Brits pay a tv tax and insist on annual Auto MOTs. But the quality of BBC programs are worth every penny of the telly tax. And Americans should have full MOT requirements instead of just requiring an emissions test every couple years. You have a great NHS system. We have private health insurance costing families over $1,000 monthly plus deductibles, out of pocket RX costs and medical visit copays. Living in both countries has been a privilege as well as an education. Thanks for your video setting viewers straight on the benefits of self-cleaning ovens. BTW your Google British Home device has a more pleasant demeanor than the American version we bought. We stopped using ours because Amazon’s Alexa is much more cordial and upbeat. Alexa here is kept in English voice because we miss the dialects we came to love. Sorry for the long long ramble.

Don't apologise - thank you for your insights. One of the things I love most about KZread is the opportunity to learn how different countries and cultures approach the same issues. I had reservations about induction hobs but once I got into the research I realised it was totally irrational. Change is what we fear most.

Two Hotpoint ovens exploded in Peterborough in Sept & Dec 2020, and as I purchased a Hotpoint self cleaning oven in October 2020 i am very concerned. I’m struggling to find the outcome of Hotpoints investigation in these matters and their findings. I’d appreciate anyones findings. Incidentally the Hotpoint ovens are manufactured in Peterborough too.

That’s frustrating that there’s no more information. This article is quite interesting- it suggests oven doors are prone to shattering even in non-self-cleaning ovens so it’s something to be aware of in general I guess www.which.co.uk/news/2017/09/exploding-ovens-why-glass-doors-shatter-and-what-to-do-it-if-happens-to-you/

@@GeorginaBisbyDIY The doors shatter as people close the glass doors on the trays and runners to push them back in the oven, or use the glass door as a shelf for their heavy roasting dishes. This weakens the glass at the time, but then the glass shatters because of the temperature change. Same thing happens if you de-ice your car windscreen with boiling water and then hit a pothole.

I used my self cleaning option quite regularly. After about 3 years my electric elements inside were destroyed. One was completely warped and the other fell apart in pieces. The repair man said that the temp is too high for the material the burners were made out of and that's why it happened. I have since changed to a gas range instead of electric and will wipe it clean after each use. I will not use the self cleaning option any more. Just beware and keep an eye on your burners.

Love your "trays" there in the UK. Hate the racks we have in the US. We just bought a used stove & it looked brand new except for the very dirty oven. It had obviously never been cleaned. So we did the self clean today. It cleaned for over 4 hours. We did have our windows open btw. Definitely smelled, but tolerable. Here's the thing tho. It burnt stains into the plastic part which is at the top part of door where handle attaches!!! We tried everything we could think of to get the stains off but it honestly seems burnt on. It's yellowed, even light brown! Seems like quite a bad manufacturing decision. Extremely irritating to say the least..

My oven is a Samsung, top of the line, my son has a top of the line GE, both had the same problem, both ovens locked after the 1st time use. The lock system is shot. The service guy said never use the self cleaning on a holiday, the service guy agreed, sad, when you spend so much money on a stove, you should be able to use the self cleaning any time you wish. I had a cheaper oven and you could use it every day with no problem. So be careful… Be very careful if you are having company

@avalisme it would be a damn if you do and damn if you don't thing but the easy off is much safer in terms of lease damages to use When the oven is heated up to extreme temperature which can create damages situation if the unit is flawed And also the self cleaning creates dangerous fumes. Self-cleaning ovens can produce and emit dangerous fumes into the air with an unpleasant burning smell. Self-cleaning ovens reach high temperatures and produce fumes from the burning of food particles and enamel lining. These fumes circulate within the indoor air and can affect the home occupants.
