Sejong the Great class destroyer the best destroyer in Asia

Ғылым және технология

The Sejong the Great Class or (Sejongdaewang Class) are the lead ship of her class of guided-missile destroyers built for the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) under the Korean Destroyer eXperimental (KDX) program. It was the first Aegis-built destroyer of the service and was named after the fourth king of the Joseon dynasty of Korea, Sejong the Great. Sejong the Great Class or (DDG 991) was constructed by the Hyundai Heavy Industries shipyard in Ulsan and it was launched in May 2007. The ship is the third phase of the South Korean navy's KDX program, a substantial shipbuilding program, which is geared toward enhancing ROKN's ability to successfully defend the maritime areas around South Korea from various modes of threats as well as becoming a blue-water navy.

The reason why the Sejong's price is low because Korea has the world's No. 1 shipbuilding industry for a long time, has excellent infrastructure, has a lot of experience in building ships, and has jointly purchased Aegis System, which accounts for most of the total price, with Japan at a discount. And three additional ships have already been built, and six new destroyers that localize everything from radar and propulsion systems will be built from next year

The US should buy these ships (or a modified version of them), doing for Cruisers what it did with the Frem Frigates from Italy. Our allies have better surface warship designs and the production capacity to make them rapidly and afordably which our own industry lacks due to the collase of the US shipbuilding industry. Their is neither the time nor money to try to revive that industry and the navy is serious about replacing the fleet it needs to tell congress to drop it's insistence on domestic production.

regarding Sejong, Long story short, something about the design's specifications have always seemed off to me, and finding the original Flight III Burke study cemented those doubts. The 128-cell Burke study ballparked the design's standard displacement at 8957 tons. That concept was 550ft long overall, which is 5.5ft more than KDX-III, and the flush deck definitely adds to its volume (and thus displacement), but it's also 10.25ft narrower than KDX-III. Given the ship should be larger than the 128-cell Burke (the wider hull will mean more deck area and hull volume), Sejong the Great should not be some 1307 tons lighter than the former if all else about the designs were the same. Which, of course, leads to the conclusion that all else between KDX-III and the 128-cell Burke is not the same. KDX-III uses the same radar, propulsion plant, most of the same weapons (Sejong has more), and has the same aviation facilities as the 128-cell Burke, so those are mostly out. Technological advances from 1989 to the late 2000s would cause savings in weight for these systems, yes, but with these key items all being the same or better on Sejong that the Burke study, it’s likely this was leveraged to make the former more capable rather than lighter. The displacement gap is not likely down to consumables (fuel, food, ammo, etc.) capacity either, as comparing the loaded displacements yields a fairly similar 1293 ton difference. The Korean ship does have a much lower complement of 300 vs. 363 (the study says 393, but that includes a growth margin), but I've never known accommodations 63 people to cost that much additional weight. If anything, trends of automation tend to show the opposite: a higher level of automation adds weight but saves space, while more crew requires greater space but reduces weight (at least until the larger crew necessitates additional shared facilities like bathrooms and mess halls). All that process of elimination really leaves only one candidate the Koreans are possibly cutting corners on: survivability. Redundant systems, watertight bulkheads, systems separation, shock isolation measures, and deliberately-inefficient system design to minimize single points of failure (among other measures) all add weight. Applied across the length of a 510ft ship, that becomes a lot of extra weight compared to civilian construction standards. Still, quantifying how much worse 1300 tons’ less of subdivision is for Sejong the Great's survivability is can't be done without a detailed set of blueprints. TL;DR The Koreans are likely skimping on survivability, which is why they can shove so many weapons on KDX-III for relatively low displacement. Building a Sejong the Great equivalent ship to USN standards would result in a large, 4-figure displacement increase over Arleigh Burke, likely to about 12000-13000 tons loaded.

I have a feeling another size increase will happen to accommodate more localized content like the K-VLS, which is actually larger than the Mk.41, cell to cell. The US Navy may want to rope in the Koreans for their Ticonderoga Cruiser replacement program. They could conceivably provide the information needed to finally see a new class built and the Ticos to finally retire.

For those that think that Koreans are no good at building warships on my opinion they are a better and reliable than the Chinese. Korean Hyundai heavy industry made the two Multi mission frigates a Jose Rizal Class Frigates of the Philippines. It is such a good Warships that even Chinese don't dare anymore to come near to the EEZ of the Philippines after the arrival of two frigates that is named BRO Jose Rizal and BRP Antonio Luna. Hyundai of South Korea are also building the two new Corvettes for the PHILIPPINES that is heavier longer and bigger than the frigates. What I like about Koreans is they always know what is their costumer wants the Koreans able to adjust depends what their costumer needs. Just because it's Asia doesn't mean it's not made with quality. PHILIPPINES is buying warship in Korea the thing is Korean Warships are cheap yet very reliable..

The Philippines have paid a heavy price ever since they demanded the Americans leave their military bases 30 years ago in 1992. The Philippines only have themselves to blame for the predicament they find themselves in.

This ship is literally at least 3 times as potent as a British type 45 while costing less. It really shows the ripoff of the British tax payer and betrayal of British defence needs. This has 128 vlc, a type 45 has 48. This has a towed sonar and the type 45 being an air defence destroyer as we're told has none. With over twice the vlc air defence and cruise missile capacity and anti submarine sonar and rockets it is at least 3 times as potent.

If you wonder how the hell South Korea built this warship that is no less sophisticated than the latest Arleigh Burke-class destroyers yet more heavily armed and bigger in size and yet... cost less than $1 billion, and they only built 3, as we know for so long that weapons program becomes more expensive if economy of scale not put into use. And now the question is how the hell latest Arleigh Burke-class destroyers cost $1,85 billion per ship to make...? The answer would be $1,35 billion of it alone is pure profit for defense companies and the rest is the real cost to build it.

Its becoming a problem where it’s losing it intended purpose of being a screening ships for capital ships and turning into something else. The littoral ships didn’t turn out well. They were a cross between corvette and frigate why don’t navies learn. Same for frigates navies are getting confused on intended purpose of the difference between frigate and destroyer. Destroyers are a screening ship and frigates are a anti sub multi purpose vessel.

With respect to South Korea, it is not really a naval power, since it does not manufacture its own propulsion technologies, but it is technology borrowed from other countries such as the United States through General Electric and the United Kingdom through Rolls-Royce, this It allows these countries to control the economy and military production of South Korea in case of military and political disagreements, creating geopolitical dependency, this about the best destroyer in Asia is just sensational news and Fake News.
