Seiko Special - SNZH57 Fifty Five Fathoms Review, SKX007 6 Month Update & An Automatic Flightmaster

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

As many of you know, Seiko is not only one of my favourite brands, but one loved by true watch connoisseurs, enthusiasts, newcomers to collecting and of course the legendary Gentry! So today, something of a Seiko special. I review the Seiko 5 SNZH57 and compare it to a recently acquired and modded version called the "Fifty Five Fathoms". The "FFF" inspired is by the most influential dive watch of all time, the Fifty Fathoms by Blancpain. I give an update on the current condition of my specially modded SKX007 "Hunter Pro" AKA "King Panther" and see how its Cerakote tactical coating has faired after 6 months. I also share the rare and rather forgotten automatic bigger brother of the legendary and much beloved Flightmaster SNA411 chronograph.

What I really like about this channel is that even though you have a lot of exotic and higher end watches, you are still able to get excited about something as 'normal' as the Seiko SKX. You get the sense that the person talking loves watches for the watch itself and not the image it carries.

I enjoy your videos tremendously. I decided to take the plunge and buy an SKX007J a couple weeks ago. It is averaging +5 seconds per day. I find myself looking at it on the wrist when I don't need to own the time. I am so pleased with the purchase. There are so few things in this world designed so perfectly for a purpose. This is right up there with th HP-12c calculator and the IBM model M keyboard. Thanks for all the advice, my life is better for it. Keep up the great work.

I own the SNZH53, which is the blue one, and I can confirm that it is amazing. The curved hardlex really funnels the light into the face, and it looks amazing and completely different depending on lighting conditions. I would agree that the lack of screwdown crown and the bracelet are both disappointing at first, but this watch hits it out of the park on almost every other feature. At that price point you can't expect a better bracelet, and I knew I was going to put it on a Nato when I ordered it, so it didn't matter. I didn't order it thinking it would be a tool dive watch, and if you compare it to the SKX on being a tool diver, the SNZH5x will fail. On the other hand, for most daily wear a dressed up dive watch hits the mark, and this watch is way nicer to look at and more interesting than the SKX.

I own the SNHZ59 (all black) and agree with most of your comments, actually the Black finish on the bracelet is incredibly tough and super effective at hiding the desk diving scratches even after 24 months of almost daily wear and the slight tapering better suits the extra wide lugs (as mentioned by Tristano) The reflections on the Hardlex dome are killing me, must replace with an AR Sapphire one day, soon :)

The SKX is a classic, for sure, and hard to beat, but the Orient Ray II and Mako II are also fantastic values, especially as they now possess the F69 movements, which are hand winding and hacking. Lovely dials with applied indices, and Orient's elegant logo, all for under $200 if you shop carefully. I quite enjoy my SNZH. The non-screw crown is a minor detraction, but I am in full agreement on the tinny bracelet. All in all, it's fascinating how many compliments this watch receives, even over much more "impressive" watches. The chrome ring surrounding the crystal really makes it pop, and the applied indices provide a lovely sparkle. I also agree that the nicely finished case is remarkable at the price. I got mine gently worn for about $100, making it arguably the biggest bargain in my collection. I'm considering doing a FFF mod on a second one, including an AR sapphire crystal. Just another project... Have you looked at any of the Deep Blues? True dive watches with excellent movements and solid construction. The case finishing on the lower-end pieces is not quite up to the same standards as the Orients or the SKX, but the dials are lovely, and the overall fit and finish is very good at the price. My somewhat more spendy DayNight does reflect greater attention to detail, along with T100 tritium tubes. The DBs might be too large for small wrists, but they do seem to wear smaller than their measurements, and I find them quite comfortable, if a little chunky. Part of their charm? I'm a new subscriber, and am enjoying your videos very much. Yours has quickly become one of my fave channels. Keep up the good work. The lack of pretense is refreshing.

For anyone that hoped to get a Seiko SBDS001, It was around £5000 RRP at launch (though more likely £3500) and doesn't look like coming back any time soon. I've never had experience with any of Seiko's Automatic Chronographs, but for that amount of money would it not be wiser to go for either a Sinn or a Breitling? It all comes down to taste but, aside from a power reserve indicator, there aren't many reasons why I would go for a movement from Seiko that's relatively new over either the Sinn chrono or Breitling Chrono options for the same price.

The SNZH57J1 was my first seiko. It followed my omega seamaster gmt and tag aquaracer. I love my 57. It's awesome. I love the display case back. Since then I've obtained four more cool seikos (sumo, samurai, SKX and a modded frankenstein kermit style), but the 57 remains my favorite.

Great review. Like you, I ordered a Fifty Five Fathoms off an eBay modder and had the same issue - watches not made in advance, so lengthy delay before shipping. To cap it off, mine had a malfunctioning power reserve so I've sent it back. GRRRRR

Aron, all I can say is life it so short. One minute you are happy walking down the road with the sun on your face, the next you could be pissing through a tube, unable to move being kept alive by machines. Live if short. Buy it. Enjoy it. It's not that much money. Sorry for getting a little dark there, but it's true. Thank you, Best regards, TGV

I wish I knew that you were planning this Seiko special. I have both the SNZH53J1 and a SNZH55 FFF modded version that you could have used for your comparisons. Nevertheless, another informative video. Thanks for your time and efforts to educate our watch enthusiasts.

I just received my SNZH 53 about a week ago. That blue dial is just perfect. I can't imagine getting a better automatic watch for $140. I just love this watch. My Seiko 5 collection keeps getting bigger because of you TGV. Might have to stop watching your channel. Nope, I know that isn't going to happen. So I guess Im just going to have to keep buying more of them.

Dear TGV and readers, having a screwed crown does not increase the water restistance. It is a misconception. The gasket just under the crown and the gasket around the stem are the same on screwed and unscrewed crowns. The only benefit of the screwing is that you can't accidentally pop out the crown thus releasing the stem while being immerged. That is all, no effect on the water resistance itself because in this case screwing doesn't actually acts against the pressure (the water). But there is exceptions : on the triplelock system from Rolex and on few Vostoks, their crowns while screwed compress a gasket. We think screwing helps because of the dial's annotation but it is false. The rating in meters is not corresping with the real WR. By example, a 30 meters rated watch is in fact barely (or not at all) water proof Edit : if you prefer drawings forumamontres.forumactif.com/t59966-etancheite-seiko-5

Terrific review again my brother in time. I appreciate the education on this post just like your previous ones. I try to do similar techniques with my university students. I'm considering the Seiko 55 now. The BP is outside my price range and where else are you getting this quality with an in house movement?

Great video once again TGV and as a seikonut I am very happy. I've not owned the flighty but have owned and modded a fair few SKX and SNZH watches. Both great at what they do and the FFF has a nice vintage vibe. No more watches for me for a while - the gorgeous SLA017 has wiped me out.

Yet another great video! I do wish more people would realise that you can definitely swim with a 100M watch without a thread down crown. Short of manipulating the crown under water, it will not leak.

Hi TGV Excellent video as always... Clearly like the unmodded Seiko 5 best, all though I see the point of the modification. Clearly a bargain in the beginners watch area, and you can still take a swim in the pool with it😊 When it comes to the modded SKS; still one of the coolest mods I've seen. A watch you can be proud of - and I feel that you are too... Good to see that the coating are so rock solid. And I might add; when it finally does begin to show some notable wear it will only add to it's charm. This is clearly a tool watch and it's supposed to be like that. If you're going to see the English Queen, you'll probably wear something different anyway...😂 Keep up the good work👍
