Seiko SNE525P1 Solar Quartz - nice & affordable beater watch

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Here is the detailed review of the solar quartz SNE525P1 that I unboxed in January.
It's a very affordable 40mm do-it-all kinda watch. It's so light and wearable that I'd say it offers great value for around S$160. For that money, you get a sapphire crystal, 100m WR and decent finishing. Not too bad for a low-cost watch.
The fuss-free solar movement is also very welcomed. You get a 10-month power reserve along with extra accuracy compared to entry level mechanicals.

A perfect, no-nonsense, high quality watch that will last years, remain super accurate, and the icing on the cake is 100m water resistance and sapphire crystal glass. Why these are not more popular I don't know as they're infinitely better than any Seiko 5 watch (I have a few of those).

Maybe people are just not into quartz watches. Agree with you these are nice and not-too-expensive watches.

@@AndyinSG Yes, but I think when people realise how costly automatics are to service and that the 5's are basically disposable 5 to 10 yr watches, they might wake up to the benefits of solar drives like Seiko's and the excellent Citizen Eco-drives. Those good at DIY repairs can always buy a spare movement for their 5's and swap it for the one in need of service when the time comes I guess but it all gets rather spendy. I think the better longer term value is to spend out on the Prospex range with the better movements (particularly the 6R35) and higher quality casework and bracelets as they're worth the service costs.

@@ReferenceFidelityComponents well said. I’ve been looking at eco-drives more and more these days. I hope the solar charging last a long time though.

I just received mine today and for the price, it's pretty good buy. The dial is nice and truth on the reflection factor, in bright lights it can obscure the markers. The dial is elegant and one of the main reasons I chose it and enjoy it. I have changed the bracelet to a black leather strap which adds some class to it. I recommend it for dress/casual watch.

I read there isn't any difference between eco drive or solar watches. Is it really the case? I'm actually more inclined towards citizen eco drive.

  • @AndyinSG

I think they’re not the same. Power reserve is quite different. The thing about Citizen is that they’ve got some very nice Eco-Drives that are coming in at >40mm, which sort of defeats the purpose of a non-bezel/non-dive watch.

Eco Drives are more accurate based on my personal experience. I have synced my Solar and 2 Eco Drives with the exact time to the second with my phone and there’s less deviation from my Eco after several months under observation👍🏻

Hi Watch Kaki! I have bought a Seiko SNE525P1 as yours, mine also has a scar/scratch in exactly the same position (between 4 and 5). The scratch extends below the 4-mark (as yours) indicating that the scratch was made before the 4-mark was put on. This is clearly a manufacturing error, that the quality-control unit at Seiko should have caught. My serial # on the watch back is 120117. What is your serial # ? Rgds HOC

Hello Henrik, thanks for writing in. Congrats on your new watch. That scratch is not so cool. I’m totally surprised that mine wasn’t an isolated case. That said, I didn’t see the scratch when I wore the watch (like twice). Too small to see unless you go close up. I can’t help you regarding the serial because I sold the watch a few weeks back. Sorry about that.

@@okinawapunterHi okinawapunter! I contacted the Seiko importer though the watchshop. The lines, that can be seen, are in fact the edges of the solar-cells. They are probably more or less visible on all the Seiko SNE525P1's. I think, a world-wide brand like Seiko should be able to hide edges like these somewhat better. I have a picture of the cells, but I do not know how to upload pictures in KZread. Rgds HOC
