A review of two of my all time favorite watches, the Seiko SKX007 and Seiko SKX009. These 200m Water Resist Dive Watches from Seiko represent a level of style, durability, and reliability that is generally reserved for watches at a price point several times higher than these. The Seiko SKX007 and it's variants will go down as one of my Hall of Fame time pieces.

    Nice video. I own both the SKX007 and the 009 and I really enjoy wearing them very much. I also like the Jubilee bracelet for its comfortable feel, good looks, and it's durable enough as I never had any problems with it. I have no intentions on modding them, I think they are just great in their original Seiko offering.

    I like the fact that it is so long, you treat it almost as a friend, something that is with you everyday, that you look at , in my case, probably a hundred times a day, and not just a thing with specs as if one is talking about a computer or something, which some reviews are. A watch is a very different beast, at least to a lot of people. Well done !

    The SEIKO SKX series (e.g. 007, 009) in my experience(s) have been sublimely beautiful, reliable, accurate, rugged, customizable, and easy to regulate (to 1-2 seconds a day, I can use the 6 position timings to daily regulate the movement to within a second or two). The pepsi you review is one of my favorites... I find that the SKXs are classic (by definition, they have set aesthetic design standards and been available forever), technically evolving (the initial capability to be wound automatically bidirectionally, day/date display, 200M WR, minimal service required.... I have several SKXs and find the quality to be consistent and very attractive. Put a higher-end SEIKO sourced Jubilee bracelet on them (they also look great with several nato straps) and enjoy a new look. I also find the way to set the SKX to the second (use a gentle reverse pull on the crown while in setting mode to stop the seconds hand, then gently shake the watch to start on the precise synched time). By the way, I just picked up an Orient 2 (black dial AA02004B, FAA02004B), and am really looking forward to it... will probably replace the bracelet with 22mm SS MILTAT as well... Cheers!

    A detailed video, your comments about the length of your videos at the beginning of this one goes double for me. I own the 007 and the 009. Great looking, great wearing, great operating watches. I think the 4 o'clock crown position is nothing short of genius. The non hacking non winding is of no issue IMHO. Appreciate your going into detail about the bezel however not sure you mention it being an ISO 6425 requirement. Also is the case for the lollipop second hand, I wish they were still $200! Thank you for posting.

    Here's my skx journey. I bought an skx 013 way back when you could still get them for 200$. I always preferred smaller watches even tho my wrist is 7 inch. I wore the skx 013 but it just seemed too small something was missing and as a result I never truly bonded with it. In early 2019 I decided to buy the skx007. I managed to get a japan made version on the grey market for 350$ when I looked at the price yesterday it was 600$ I'm so glad I pulled the trigger then. Its 2022 now and the skx007 is my main watch it genuinely feels like I found the one. I wear it everywhere, university, swimming in the cold briney Irish ocean and it has never let me down I will never ever mod or sell my skx. I would honestly say that buying one in 2022 is still worth it the watch is a classic and you wont regret it.

    The accuracy debate is an interesting one, and very polarizing. Many guys like yourself aren't too concerned about it. Others what a watch to be as precise as is possible. For me, it's important for a watch to be accurate. Not because I need to know the time down to the second, but because I like knowing that this little machine is running at peak performance and is precise just for the sake of being so.

    Very nice detailed review. The SKX is a real workhorse of a watch that can fit in any collection. I find with the bracelet removal, practice is the only way to truly make it easy. The more times you remove them, the easier it becomes, regardless of the tool you are using. It's helpful to buy a spring bar tool that has different size tips so you can adjust them for larger or smaller spring bars.

  • @JustBlueFish

    @JustBlueFish

    7 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching and the comments buddy. About the spring bars. I hope I wasn't implying that a person shouldn't have a proper removal tool on hand. They're great, and the best option, for most watches. But for whatever reason on these big bars on the Skx the only thing I can get to work is that small flat head driver.

    Excellent review. Just want to add that the stock rubber strap is really nice. Beautiful design and detailing, flexes because of the vents and is very strong. If you want to buy it separately is costs around $20, which I think it is worth. I do not understand why people sneer at the rubber strap honestly, the strap is a critical part of the ISO 6425 specification and the Z 22 conforms to that.

    Thanks for taking the time to do such an in depth review of these 2 models. I've recently gotten into watches with a casio wave ceptor and I am curious about dipping my toes in the mechanical side of watches however I have a very limited budget. This is one of the watches I have been thinking about and I have yet to find a video as informative as yours. You explore pretty much all the aspects of the watch that I would ever consider personally. The one thing about this model that really bothers me is the fact that you can't hack the movement. I was considering maybe the orient ray 2. Do you still have yours and how has it held up over time if you kept it for a longer period?

    I don't think it has anything to do with not being able to hack the seconds. You can do the backhacking method if you really wanted to align the minute hand. I have quartz Citizen and although I adjust the minute hand to hit the marker precisely, within a few hours it drifts a bit and hits in between markers which drives me crazy. This might not be as common in automatics though.

    I know I'm a little late to the party but I need to ask you a question. At 57:24 I can see that you can slide the outer part of the spring bar back and forth. At first I thought I had broken the spring bar but then I saw this and became a little more calm. My question is: With the outer part sliding around like that, how on earth do you remove the spring bar?

  • @JustBlueFish

    Chris Gennin thanks for watching I appreciate it. Regarding the J vs K. I haven't seen a J in person but based on my experience with my K models and what I know about the J, I don't think I'd spend an extra $100 dollars. But if you decided to I wouldn't say that it's any kind of mistake. I just don't believe there's a significant difference between them. Perhaps the J holds value better because the perception people have on it? Either way you're going to end up with a cool watch.

  • @CoolCforlife

    @CoolCforlife

    7 жыл бұрын

    I agree. I just bought the K model. After reading endless info, reviews, etc about the two versions, I decided to spend the $199 w/amazon prime. I couldn't get myself to spend $299 for the J model. Like you said, there isn't significant differences to make it worth it (at least to me, no judgement on anyone else making that purchase though). This is my first Seiko, figured it will be a fun watch to mod at a later point, jump in the pool or ocean with, and not stress (like I would with one of my other more expensive watches). I have an Omega Seamaster 300, and I know i can go in the water/ocean with but I still kind of get paranoid lol.

    I watched the whole thing just now. After having the SRP777 Turtle for a year, I am back and fourth if I want to get an SKX (J version) before it's too late. I find I enjoy the Turtle most of the time (especially in the summer), but I do feel like it's a big watch (even though it wears smaller than the specs indicate). I have tried on a Seiko 5 Divers (that looks like the SKX) a while back on NATO and that seemed to fit very nicely... My reservations of the SKX are the non hacking movement and the current cost - $300+ depending on wear you buy... I bought the Turtle for $250 brand new, which I felt was a bargain for what it is. I have no alignment issues and it's keeping relatively accurate time, much better than the published specs. My other reservation is redundancy with the SKX and the Turtle. I guess I'll need to decide if it's worth having both in the collection. Thanks for the in depth video.

    Great review! I wish I would have seen a video like this first but I don't regret picking up my 009J at all. I notice there aren't many J versions floating around & most reviews are for the K but honestly there's probably no mechanical difference. I believe I will pick up a 007 soon as well. I agree that the Pepsi version is hard to combine with clothes sometimes whereas the black 007 is super easy to throw onto any outfit, it's basically a no brainer. Switch the nato around if you really need to takes 5 seconds & you're out.

    I looked for a J version for a bit, I couldn't find one at all, so settled for the K. Other then saying "Japan" and "21 Jewels" on the dial I don't believe there is a difference. But, I still wanted a J lol.

    That was an excellent review. I mean it wasn't as entertaining as our U.K. buddy TGV, but he has a wiser audience to tailor to. I thought your explanation on how to set the SKX 007 date was key--I've seen multiple reviews where no one could explain how to set it so it changed after midnight. Also, the SKX 007J (Japan) model might have more accurate bezel alignment from what I have seen. I believe you have the K model which may have more 'quality control' issues that you mentioned. I ordered the 007 and think it's a gorgeous watch. Thank you for taking the time to be so thorough for us. -James

    Ooohh that's a Zen-like experience watching this. Great for falling asleep too apparently, but did finish watching it the next morning. :) Couple comments: * The blue is a different shade from the bezel on the 009 which I think is very intentional, also on the 007 the dial is more charcoal than black, while the bezel color is more black so I think that's consistent. I might like the legibility of the 009 slightly more, it's just a very deep dark blue color which contrasts slightly more with the white markers. * Speaking of those white markers, I like that they're actually white in normal light; on many watches (like the Orient Ray) the lume will get a greenish tinge also in regular light. SKX007/009 is whiter. * -6 or +8 would make me want to regulate it. Have you tried resting it crown-down at night for the one that's fast? That could bleed off some seconds at night, and especially when you skip a day wearing it and keep in crown down as it unwinds a bit, it can bleed off relatively a lot of seconds that way. I can keep my 007 within 15 or so seconds of actual time by keeping it crown down for 36 hours once a week or so. * If you do regulate it I don't think that requires any kind of equipment, just go by trial and error; even the slightest movement of the regulator lever will throw it way too much one way or the other so what I do is move it clearly so I know I've moved it, and then move it back to what I think is the same position it was in. And then wait a couple hours to see if I'm close. (No need to tightly screw the caseback back in, just a couple turns so dust doesn't get in.) Then within a couple days of doing that you should have it pretty close to perfect, say a couple seconds fast per day. And at that point it's still good to have the rubber seals changed and have it pressure tested by a watchmaker. (I find that watch makers don't perceive 8 seconds fast or slow as any kind of issue that merits work, they'll just go: "yeah, it's a non Swiss, non COSC cheapo automatic, of course it'll be a handful of seconds fast or slow.. why are you here?" LOL. ) * Speaking of watch makers and getting it serviced (not after 3 years, but perhaps after about 7-10 years), that's expensive in Western countries.. but if you're going on a holiday with one or more 5-10 year old Seiko Automatics to places like SE Asia, South America or Eastern Europe, any old dude in a watch repair shop will do it for reasonable money. I'm in Thailand and my experience has been excellent, especially when buying vintage watches that then needed a repair; had even old Russian vintage watches (that the watchmaker wouldn't have any experience with) repaired for $10-$15.. A watchmaker in the US would most definitely not touch a 40+ year old Russian mechanical alarm watch with faulty alarm function, and especially not for $15. Here I had it fixed within a day (broken spring in the alarm spring barrel). So that makes me pretty confident about servicing Seikos, too. (With which they're far more familiar too, with spare parts and lubricants readily available.) * I also like the bracelet. I keep my 007 on bracelet and 009 (with a more 'tool' look with the red on the bezel) works well on a rubber strap. I got an Isofrane inspired strap with nice open gaps which is cooler in the tropics here. I also got a fancier Bonetto Cinturini rubber strap but find it almost too 'dressy' (I know, for rubber..) so I'm using that on the dressier Orient Ray, but then the 009 on "Isofrane" (by Obris Morgan, they make very good and affordable rubber straps in lots of colors) * I think a proper spring bar tool works just fine on them.. however it definitely gets easier when you replace the stock spring bars with ones that are flanged. (While still being Seiko style fat bars of course.)

    My skx007 recently became my dress watch, i have hardly used it in water sports, then i started to wear it under suit at my workpplace. Just feel happy while wearing it. Of course Ray II is technically better with hacking and handwinding featured automatic movement, but SKX is still SKX and despite 7s26 being not a good movement, i still love it. I would say it's like people at the shooting range all about half minute of angle shots, but if in real battle would someone even remember how to shoot? Just saying lol. I think it's cool that the talk or the high achievements are if a watch is accurate! But that should not be the high standard every watch should achieve yes or nah? Very few understand the economics and usage of these affordable watches/movements. It’s very simple: Never ever service it. Wear it until it stops working, it will be a looooooooooooong time unless you bang it hard on every door you enter 😀 When the movement dies, buy a new one for around $30 and exchange it yourself, it is the easiest task ever, if you are really really non-technical, ask any of your more technically inclined friends to do it. Don’t ever pay for such task, honestly it’s less complicated than changing a light bulb on your car.

    I can't say that I've done it but I wouldn't think the average person could change the watch movement without causing some damage to the watch. Removing the hands and dial alone would seem to be a delicate procedure. That also doesn't account for the cost of buying the tools, which isn't negligible if you buy decent quality tools. For an enthusiast, sure give it a shot. But I don't think I'd suggest any random person do it.

  • @d3xmeister

    @d3xmeister

    That's true the hands removal is a kinda delicate. I have a full set of tools for with I paid $20. Sure, they are low quality but for over a year now they get the job done well, it's more about being careful and patient. The problem in your part of the world is that services cost a lot. Where I live you can get a complete service for $50, and I mean a really really good service for a very skilled watchmaker. There are watchmakers that do it for $20, I never tried them and don't plan to. And a movement swap ? 10 bucks !!! :)) Thanks for responding, I really like your channel
