Seiko SARB033 on steroids: Building the Explorer Broad Arrow
Who doesn't like the timeless looks of the Rolex Explorer. But I've always wondered what a mid-sized Explorer with sportier hands would look like. In this video tutorial, I turn my Seiko SARB 033 into my interpretation of the perfect Explorer with a hour hand inspired by the the vintage Speedmaster broad arrow.
I know this one may be controversial. People might say: "why are you hacking up the venerable SARB", or "Omega hands don't belong on a Rolex dial". I personally think the result is an aesthetically well proportioned, one-of-a-kind watch. Have fun, don't take this hobby too seriously, and stay safe.

Congrats on another stellar video bro. Thoroughly enjoyed your take on things and you’re opinions. Love that you’re doing something far different from the millions of watch channels out there. Keep it up.

Thanks man! Even after a year I still wear this watch with pride 😎
Thank you so much Max for this video. It gave me the stones to mod my sarb035 which I never really connected to: I got the dial from Yobokies which has an "explorer" dial specifically for the sarb 33/35 models. The hands came from Dagaz. The Yobokies dial has its own chapter ring thus enabling you to keep it intact with the dial--although the dial you're using looks better. This is the first mod I've done with dial and hands. Incidentally, I was surprised how lousy the lume was on the dial and hands for the money I paid. The spacer ring in the 6r15 movement that separates the dial from the movement is made of really soft metal and broke on me. So I went for broke and took out the date wheel. This left the movement recessed in the case at the end so I couldn't use the metal tabs with screws which held the metal movement holder to the movement. So I didn't use them at all--I just screwed on the back and all was well. Oh yea, one of the feet on the dial broke off while I was stripping the feet screws (really soft metal) so I super glued the remaining dial foot inside the movement hole at the 2 o'clock position where one of the retaining screws fell out (and I couldn't find it it was so small). After adjusting the time and putting it all together I got'er done. Actually the watch looks and performs fantastically. I know the video shows you doing things the "right" way but anyone who's a beginner or who remembers their first mods knows the frustration and what I'm talking about. I still have the intact dial and hands of the sarb035 but I never really liked the dial anyway. Thanks again.

Wow, what a project. I'm glad you saved it at the end, this definitely was more involved than just changing a dial, but I commend you for diving in. Wear that watch proud, it's one of a kind!
Wow that ended up looking great and I'm happy to come across your channel. Have a sub!
OMG it looks amazing. You've inspired me to mod my sarb. I got pieces from yobokies. Can't wait to try.
Wow man honesty looks better than the Rolex beautiful photography and steady hands big things ahead for this channel honored to be an early subscriber.
Beautiful watch Max, I loved that 38mm look to the Explorer. UK here so cannot be included in the giveaway but Teddy Baldasarre did a similar thing the other day so you're in good company.
Awesome video! Thanks for it all from the beginning to the end! The salt and pepper that I miss at the very end is the before/after lineup of your watch. That way we'd get what you achieved and how it became a "sportier" Explorer. But please don't get me wrong, I do love what you did! Keep up the good work!

Go for it! If you've done a SEIKO 5 before, it's marginally more complicated.
Ever since I got my SARB for a couple of years I have always thought about modding the dial as I just didn’t connect with it. This was exactly what I had in mind to mod it like an explorer. Awesome!

Retro watch one question, do you need any adhesive for the chapter ring to remain in place on the dial or it just sits snuggly on top?
@kenshin81x

Retro watch thanks but what I meant was the chapter ring you harvested which you seemingly just place on top of the dial. I was wondering if it would stay in place?

I have the sarb and love it. The only thing I would change is the hands to a handset similar to the Rolex date just so that it would have a slightly more sporty look giving it a little bit more versatility .

Great video. Is the original sarb033 dial 28.5 without the chapter ring?
Great video and I always loved the 36mm ref 1016. Have you ever checked out the brand Serica. They make a 37.7mm field watch and it can be had with broad arrow hands and it is an awesome watch. Thanks again, Brian.

Pains me to see a SARB033 go. That is my first nice watch. Also, my watch that celebrated a life event. I do agree that the SARB003 case is the ideal case for small wrists. So I can't cry about it too much since it will get wrist time.
I couldn't do it to mine, but damn it looks sharp

Really nice mod!! Love the idea of changing the hands to broad arrow hands. Never liked the mercedes hands on any of the Rolexes. You could keep the movement and dial and just get an NH 35 and attach the explorer dial and hands. Pretty sure you’d be able to get a chapter ring that fits as well. That way you can keep your original sarb033 dial and movement and put it back on when you feel like.

Haven't missed the original dial at all. I didn't really care for the SARB hour indices 🤓
Terrific mod! Have same issue of 36 too small; 39 too big. Well done! #Strapme
Your channel is buzzin
I love that you can do all this. But this is like messing with the Krabby patty’s formula, mutiny! Lol. Awesome video!
I didn’t know that you’d have to drill out the chapter ring. I wonder if my SARY057 is the same. The chapter ring is slightly out of alignment and it bugs me now that I’ve seen it. Guess I can’t fix it if attached like this. Great mod. Looks classy

With how much SARBs are going for now, I really hope you were able to bring it back to oem spec. It’s pretty much cemented as an all time great Seiko. Just my opinion.

Looks like TGV took a lot of inspiration from this one when designing the islander rangemaster
Can you add a follow-up video to make me understand how the hands fit arond the ‘centre post’ and how they fall in place simply by beng pushed on - because ONLY THEN, after I SEE the tiny details of it, maybe with som graphics, would I ever try it ?

I’d like to see that, but have no instagram. I’ll search it and see if I find some photos, now that I know there is something there to be seen, so it isn’t magic then is what you are saying.
My man, that was worth transforming the SARB, I appreciate the daring move. It's better looking than an actual explorer, because of those proportions, and hands.

You are NOT ALONE! I've never cared for them either. I prefer just straight sword. Explained: I love the long minute hand of the Merc hand set, so an hour hand identical to it but if course, shorter, is ideal for me. I love that look. Just like the first rolex submariners.

very very good video but you could also address a crystal upgrade. and polishing the watch. otherwise a perfect instruction. i am personally still debating a single vs double dome upgrade as well. i don't need to do that but i like to think about the challenges of a single watch user, who want to push a bit harder.

Brilliant! I’ve been looking for an affordable Explorer alternative but don’t necessarily want a SARB again. This looks a lot more sophisticated than my old SARB017 - opening up in multiple directions by ditching that green/gold design. Bravo 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Hey Max .... I don't believe you actually wrote the opening sentence in your description. I am damned sure I am not the only person who does NOT like that Explorer's looks, because they are NOT to my taste. I DO like the timeless looks of an Oyster Perpetual with just slim stick indices and no digits on the dial, with or without the date complication. Call me an ultra-conservative or square or nerd, but this is the fact.

Sacrilege Max! You just spoilt an almost perfect watch with a dial that looks like it was designed by a child. Sure, the bracelet on the 33 is ordinary, and it needs A/R coating on the crystal, but that dial and hands are perfection. Nope!
I dont like the mercedes hands as well it's been too overdone not only by rolex, but also by homages, and counterfeits. it just feel too uninspired in this day and age
