I saw him perform in Toronto when he was about 85 years old and past his prime. I actually got his autograph after the performance. It was a great privilege to see a historic guitarist who shaped the careers of the next 2 or 3 generations of guitarists.

Segovia was a master up to the very end of his life. His influence and resonance; all the compositions of the most famous composers of the XX century dedicated to him give but a clue of his greatness. As he spoke of his own legacy: “taking the guitar out of the hands of the noisy flamenco player and out the tabernas. And besides, as an artist, he was a sound intellectual man, comprehensive in culture and a kind profesor, eager to share his knowledge without any selfishness with those eager to learn. Forever thankful to him!

Always love his playing on Spanish impressionist pieces. His los olivos video is great. Very interesting too hear his sound compared too modern. Day players I wonder what Segovia would think of modern guitars

I think he would be happy of the number of young guitarists and how the Classical guitar world has grown thanks in a huge part to the Maestro himself.

I've always wondered about that too. I assumed it's because, as he has said, he practiced for many years to develop his technique first.

The ignorance and audacity displayed by the user "Endtimeguitarist" below is breathtaking. It is undeniable that a part of Segovia's success had to do with his being in the right place at the right time (contrary to many of his talented predecessors, he benefited from modern transportation, and the recording technology available). However, only a dilettante or an unlettered oaf could turn a blind eye to the influence and legacy of an artist like Segovia. Generations of beloved "pluckers" like J. Bream, J. Williams, H. Smith, E. Fisk, D. Russell, Barrios "Mangore", (regardless of the unfair treatment he received from Segovia), P. Romero, S. Tennant, M. Berrueco, to name but a few, would not have been possible without Segovia's legacy, mentoring, recitals and recordings. For better or worse, Segovia's legacy is unfathomable.

Like many others if it wasn’t for his fame or the acclaim as to who he was no one would think of this musician as someone very noteworthy. There are many other guitarists focused on classical that are much more talented and vibrant in their playing. To me this guy was just an example of someone who was well marketed.

An interesting opinion. Certainly there is room for criticism about how Segovia overshadowed many other legitimate contributors. But to say he was "merely well marketed" is to ignore how so much of the repertoire was composed thanks to his commissions: Ponce's great works, Moreno-Torroba, Turina, Mompou, and others wrote for Segovia and his style specifically, and became legends in the guitar world thanks to Segovia's interpretations of their works. Also, check out Segovia's scratchy old recording of Ponce's Sonatina Meridional. I would place it next to Hendrix.

Segovia is a very distinguished guitarist nonetheless, and evokes a lot of beauty and passion in his playing. Comparing him to some of the more modern players, even some of them lack some beauty in their playing, which Segovia has.

Give the man a break. He was 86 years old. Segovia's solo interpretations are full of unscripted fermatas and liberties with the time. He did play on time when he played concertos.

Music is not all about a metronome! Do you have any idea about Spanish guitar as a popular instrument and the cultural heritage that it represents? Or how a guitar player like Segovia became an inspiration for great composers of his time? Do challenge any computer to play like a human soul. In his way of performing he put all his knowledge and traditions, and maybe you don't still know that when an artist grows older he doesn't play with tecniche anymore but with his mature soul.
