Sega Saturn Prototype - Metal Gear Solid

Ойындар

Some people claim that at the 1998 Tokyo Game Show, a programmer supposedly confirmed that a Saturn version of Metal Gear Solid was in development but got canceled with the announcement of the Dreamcast.
According to some, it's an absurd rumor because the Sega Saturn would have been incapable of running MGS due to its 3D capabilities being light years behind those of the PlayStation.
Whether the rumor is true or not, with this Prototype, I believe the debate about the Sega Saturn 3D capabilities is settled.

who are you? where did you get the supposed demo from? If this is real, sooner or later it leaks out to everyone, everywhere. The fact that you ask for money only makes me think that this is made like the typical PSX demakes, or something similar, I lived through that time, mgs, it was never intended for the Saturn, if something was mentioned in a magazine years ago, just It was one of thousands of sayings in the magazines of the time, of which you can find thousands of rumors like the ones echoed today by the current press, to get clicks and make money... and if there had been a demo in I would have seen some e3, but it never happened, because this game was designed for the PSX, which Kojima loved so much.

The N64 was not easy at all, but it had 2 mega killer apps, Mario and Donkey Kong 64, the N64 only have 270 games from 1996 - 2002. Alot of N64 Games got cancelled due to this, but another reason the 64 sold well was because it was in every retail store in the US, ironically the same market Sega was guarantee to be successful in Sony and Nintendo stole the show. Sega Saturn architecture had nothing to do with its failures but it didn't help either, Sega wasn't readily available in all retail, with this, no one couldn't buy a Saturn, most cities didn't even have Saturn stock, to sell a product you need social proof, like for example If a guy wants a girlfriend, then with enough game or rizz he can get one despite his looks. If you wanna be a player and want a bunch of women social proof is your friend, basically when girls here enough player info about you to arouse their curiosity to make her tell her friends until word gets around and boom, all the girls chase you. ( watch the movie 🎥 HOW TO BE A PLAYER) ANY WHO, the Sega Saturn had no social proof outside Japan 🗾, so even if the Saturn was easier to program for than the PS or N64 on the best day ever it would have failed, period point blank. Lots of my friends wanted Saturn but couldn't find them anywhere, I only knew one person that had one and luck would have it he was on a school field trip at 6ix Flags, and ask his teacher could he buy one and she was cool with it, I that was in St Louis Missouri, I don't think no stores in Indiana had them, so you know what that means, everyone had to buy PS against their will. The Sega Saturn was short on supply which made it impossible to sell. Sega (Japan) purposely shorted themselves to save money in the US. With the stores that did have Saturn they ran out. Meaning you had to get a PS, rather if you want to or not. When everyone bought a PS by 1997 the writing was on the wall. All the his social proof of the PS made it appealing to the dwendling Saturn fans. Then the would be Saturn games moved to PS due to getting the games done on time. They were thinking the SS isn't selling, if we release games on a system that barely moved 7 million (1997) how we gone sell units, The poor but beloved 😍 SS deserves another chance, it breaks my heart to imagine what could have been. The Saturn mess wasn't Kalinske fault, Sega of Japan rushed it pre maturely, they should have givin away dev kits for people to test out and get used to it. moral of this story, don't be in a hurry for no reason and if you feel desperate, don't make any more moves until you start thinking.

Amazing work on this! Just shows that often it was commercial pressures or developer relationships rather than technical limitations that decided whether a particular game was on a particular system. Of all the PlayStations heavy hitters this was the one I most wanted to see on Saturn and this goes a small way to realising that dream. I always thought it was well suited to the format. While obviously the original was developed with the PlayStation hardware in mind it just goes to show what was possible with good programming & enough determination & skill. Likewise - had the Saturn been uber successful and this had been developed taking into account the Saturn's strengths (and quirks!) then likely heavy use of VDP plane rotation etc would have gone a long way to doing some of the heavy lifting as the design f the game would have been tweaked to suit the hardware. Even with that I always thought MGS is a game that lends itself well to the hardware. Great stuff!

    >3D capabilities being *light years behind* those of the PlayStation. "Light years behind" is a ridiculous overstatement; the Saturn was a bit behind in its handling of 3D graphics, but not by a huge margin. Also, developers never really got to explore its full 3d capabilities as it was discontinued a bit too soon.

Wait, people have said that the Saturn couldn't have pulled off MGS? Why? it's hardly the most visually impressive game on the PS1 to begin with? the only reason the Saturn "couldn't" run MGS was because the developers of the time couldn't be bothered making it do so, as this demo clearly shows. Most of it would be polygon count based. I imagine things like the tank outside would be a struggle, any kind of effect would have to be "Saturnifed" to get it to work at a reasonable FPS. It's not that it couldn't work, but that it would be a lot of work. I think Saturn "exclusive" tomb raider is a good example. Great game but as soon as you play the PS1 version you can see the difference in processing time from using triangles instead of quadrilaterals.

This belief that Saturn is not good at 3D games is pure legend! The console had a lot of power and SEGA knew how to extract all the capacity but did not share this devkit and left the developers to their own devices, which resulted in low quality 3D games most of the time compared to the PS1. the saturn could have made metal gear solid but it was far too complex. you have to distinguish between the technical limits of the saturn in 3d and the enormous complexity of the saturn to make evolved games in 3d. the playstation was much easier and more accessible to make 3d games, but that doesn't mean it was better. games that make really good use of the saturn's power, like virtua fighter 2, are far more technically advanced than tekken 3, for example, but at the same time it's a real headache to develop on saturn. if you take away the saturn's enormous complexity, its 3d power is far more impressive than people imagine.

And even then it's still a rather restrictive view, seeing as most of the game takes place in tight corridors. Besides even fully 3d games with free camera could run fin on Saturn as proven by quake and Duke Nukem 3d

Regardless of whether or not this is legit, there's no way the Saturn wouldn't be able to run MGS. The thing with the Saturn and 3D is not so much that it's not able to handle 3D, but rather that it's a nightmare to work with, which is why only SEGA themselves were really able to make the most of it Either way though, this is cool to see.

The thing is the Saturn was both a pain, and the developers would have to redesign or reconstruct a lot of the visuals to mimic the PS1 version. A port of MGS was possible but the big question is how good would it look? The prototype although is a nice representation it exhibits Saturn's weaknesses in 3D.

While the Saturn was more capable of 2D rendering, it was certainly capable to 3D and there were ports of Tomb Raider and Resident Evil that made it to the platform. The console rendered in rectangles in stead of triangles for polygons and was a slightly wider resolution that the PlayStation, so there was indeed a steep learning curve and was incapable of doing traditional transparency effects (see Mega Man 8), but you gotta remember that the original Shenmue was neck deep in development for the Saturn before all development was moved to the Dreamcast. Best examples of extracting performance out of the console were any of the games by Travelers Tales. Sure it would have taken some time and effort, but Konami did have other titles on the platform and I could totally see Metal Gear Solid getting a successful port and release.

Interesting, will have to take a look at this. I have heard different stories from both sides...as an American, my perspective from the articles+resources I have access to in English paint Sega of Japan in a terrible light, but surely there must be a good explanation for all of the self-sabotaging other than "we were jealous and wanted to put Americans in their place". Don't get me wrong, I have been to Japan and witnessed how racist and exclusive some people can be over there, but an entire company the size of half of the collective video game industry in the 90s all contributing to this problem seems a bit far-fetched.
