Sega's Answer To Resident Evil | Deep Fear (SAT)

Ойындар

#horrorgaming #retrogaming #gamereview
Deep Fear is a survival horror game developed by Sega for the Saturn. Is it the answer to Resident Evil that Sega was hoping for on their dying 32-bit console? Or is it just another pale imitator buried in the wake of Capcom's unstoppable franchise?

    1:05:40 When Pablo Kuntz (the first person to voice Albert Wesker) played the original Resident Evil with his son, he said that he and his costars were living in Japan for a while before they got cast in the game. They got used to Japanese people speaking to them in oddly phrased English, which desensitized them when they were asked to read the infamously weird lines they recorded. I assume the same factor is at work here.

John Mayor was Niko Bennex of Arc Rise Fantasia, Clancy Dawkins is Willy of Willy Combat, Ironfist is Alan Gado in Bloody Roar 2 and additional voices in Shenmue II, Danny Reynolds has the most recent role, an unnamed captain in the 2013 Rurouni Kenshin anime, and the biggest name is Mookie Carver, who not only also has additional Shenmue II voices, but is also the poor schmuck who voiced Astro Man and Duo in Megaman 8 and Zero in Megaman X4.

    YES! Thank you for covering this. I remember popping this import into my Saturn back in the day and screaming with laughter at the voice acting. It was beyond amazing. The problem was no one else knew about it (other than my local friends), so for years, the only people who would understand the jokes around the voice lines in the game were those few friends and my brother. The first time Dubois spoke I had NO idea what was going on or what the voice actor was going for. Everyone needs to play this game. Also the final explanation of what the hell was happening at the end was all in Japanese. It took years until the English translation came out that I finally got the plot. And I was just as invested in Rambo’s well being as you were.

    I recognized the name Kenji Kawai from his work on Folklore, one of the most underrated PS3 games, in my opinion. The music in that game is absolutely gorgeous. Some other credits I thought were interesting that I didn't know about before are Mob Psycho 100, that CGI Resident Evil movie from a few years ago, the old live-action Death Note adaptions, and fking Ringu! That's so cool. I also just wanted to say I really appreciate the way you fully caption your videos! 4:03 RE2 never getting a Sega Saturn port is the reason why RESIDENT EVIL CODE: Veronica was made. Sega had asked Capcom for a port of RE2 on the Saturn: when they were told it wasn't feasible from a technical standpoint (the drop in quality would've been significant), Sega then asked for an exclusive RE game for their upcoming Dreamcast machine.

  • @MrAweeze

    @MrAweeze

    Why would the drop in quality be significant? Isn't the port of RE considered to be (one of) the definitive version of the first game, which was made to run on the same hardware as 2? Or Maybe I'm misrembering and the port is ass lol

    @@MrAweeze The Saturn port of RE1 had brighter colors and certain textures were better, but the poly count was lower and the shading was terrible. RE2 was a major leap forward, taking full advantage of the PS1's architecture: it's very unlikely the Saturn could've managed that. Given that the game was also ported to the N64 and PC (and later to the DC and GC), it's not that Capcom was being precious with it or anything: had they been able to do it properly, they would've done it. EDIT: here's a direct comparison. At 6:48 you can see that the shading on the Saturn was nonexistent. RE2 had a lot more shading to simulate dynamic lighting. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aoFo0peKedzHdJs.html

    I have such a soft spot for this disaster. Although the channel has stopped uploading, Retsupurae did a hilarious riff of this game. My favorite actual fact is that NOBODY believes John about the monsters at first because it's April Fool's Day. That has to be some of the funniest shit I've ever heard. Fujiyama actually has a pretty interesting payoff! You find his corpse in his own Big Jim in the Connection Park while you're exploring underwater. Interacting with it tells you he probably got eaten to death by those annoying barracudas. I actually thought that was one of the more subtle and neat touches to the game. But oh my lord, the narm on this is so good, I love it. Agreed with you 100% on that. It's not an amazing game, but the voice acting (ESPECIALLY Dubois) sends me every time. Thanks for covering this, excellent job as always!

    Much like in another video talking about this, I feel like it could be interesting to see how a remake could work (possibly with some added bonus of playing the original, somewhere). I mean, given how well the RE remakes faired, alongside the chance to potentially do more with it, now that over 20 years of improvements in design have happened, it could be something really special.

    Tank controls were the best solution for games with fixed camera angles imo. If the controls were relative to the camera instead of the character it would be easy to mix up your inputs when the character moves past a camera angle transition.

    So, here's an interesting thing: the remake of the first Resident Evil in 2002 added an analog movement option that did exactly this, it moved the character in the direction relative to the camera. But when the transition happened, if you kept holding the analog to the same direction, the scene change would make the character keep moving in the direction they're facing. It was very clever in my opinion, although it takes a bit for us to get used to it, specially if you lean more into the classic tank controls.
