The strips of information are called "Obi Strips" (Belts). They are found on Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, VHS, and probably more... They usually contain product summaries and barcodes, as well as collector's and series numbers, if apliccable.

  • @HappyCodingZX

The spine card in the Japanese games are used make the information more readable when they are still in the sellophane as they sit around the case beneath the plastic wrap (i.e under the sellophane but not under the plastic - being under two layers of plastic makes it harder to read I guess). They usually also contain the UPC (product code) to be scanned by the shop.

I'd love a PS1 rental box, that was built like a tank. I still think to this day it's one of the best 3rd party solutions as far as console portability goes. I've had power tool cases that would cower in a corner in the presence of it.

Thanks for watching! I had a great time meeting Simon and learning about the Dreamcast with him. Excuse my poor technical analogy for the GDROM and I'm still laughing about our mental blank when it came to "exclusives" but we correct that a little later with the most obvious example. RetroManCave If you've seen any of my vids on the Dreamcast HDMI stuff, you might have guessed how awesome I think the console is. :p We're STILL working on the latest version of the board, and it will be able to do a whole lot more than just the (true digital) HDMI output, eg. running retro FPGA cores, up to and including the Amiga (Minimig). ;) I've also been working on some GD Emu stuff, and there will be the option to have that as an add on to the new HDMI board, but at a lower cost than you might expect (but one board requires the other). And then, it just so happened that the guy I've been working with on the HDMI project ([RDC]) had also done a fair bit of work on confirming the Dreamcast schematic from the (hard to read) scans that were put online many years ago. Eventually, the idea is to make a complete replacement motherboard that still fits into the original Dreamcast case, but will add the HDMI and GD Emu, plus twice the normal amount of RAM, so it would be possible to play Sega NAOMI games as well (via the FPGA "cart" "emulator"). ;) i.imgur.com/qy4iX7Y.png A real shame that Sega didn't try to hang on for a few more years with the Dreamcast, as it could easily compete with the PS2 technically, and already had a pretty decent library of fun games. I've only just started watching the vid btw, and it already looks great. ;) I've had a coffee (decaf, sorry), so I can now settle down to watch an extended RetroManHole, I mean ManCave. :p

  • @electronash

haha. Thanks. ;) The main issue is actually turning the prototypes into finished products that are practical for installers / modders to install. The older prototype board, with the custom flex cable (both designed by Mr RDC) have been working for about three years now... i.imgur.com/4mRqtV2.jpg imgur.com/jBGBoFt The capture above of the HDMI output isn't a direct digital feed btw, as I zapped the HDMI input on my AverMedia capture card (don't ask. lol), so it's going from HDMI into my external scaler box, then analog Component into the capture card. The scaler also wasn't tweaked for a true 1:1 image stretch, hence the weird glitches in the text etc. On my TV, it looks fantastic. ;) The latest board takes a different approach to how everything fits together, which should make it easier to install, but also adds a much bigger FPGA, SDRAM, and other goodies such as BlueTooth / WiFI module. (probably not for actual online play though, but for things like wireless controllers.) I'm now once again trying to save some money to help towards the cost of having 10 of the new boards built, so we can confirm everything works fine, then we can finally think about pulling the trigger on having larger batches made. (A certain retro retailer in the US has offered to front the cost of the larger batches if we go with them as the main US distributor, and we are more than happy to take them up on it. hehe) I'm still constantly learning about how to improve my own PCB layouts, but Mr RDC has done an amazing job of designing the boards (and all of the mechanical / CAD stuff) for the previous and new designs. He's way above my skill level in that area, but I do the FPGA / software side. The first test I did of a true HDMI mod was for the N64, which you can see in my ancient and crusty vids. But then Marshall came along, and did a superb job on his UltraHDMI board, and so I moved on to the Game Cube instead... And then... Mr Unseen released the source code for his own Game Cube HDMI design, so I moved on to the Dreamcast... And then... Mr Chris then released his own open-source HDMI mod for the Dreamcast, so I finally came to the conclusion that these types of project are inevitable now, and there's always room for others. lol (especially considering how long those projects have been released for, and many people are STILL waiting for their boards / mods.) Nice to hear about your channel, btw (subbed), and even better to see that you actually show footage of the games too. ;)

RetroManCave I've wanted to do "proper" vids for many years, as I said before, so my channel is just a dumping ground for random electronics stuff tbh. ol I have to admit that I don't know a lot of the different Dreamcast games either, so it's good to see some of the more obscure ones. Sadly, I don't tend to play games very often at all any more (due to the projects), but I'll always want to be involved in retro-related projects and hardware. I have this illusion that I might one day finish some of the main projects, then be able to sit down and actually start playing some games again (hopefully in glorious digital HDMI). lol I really want to try the HDMI board on consoles like the 3DO, Jaguar, OG Xbox, and PS2 next. The 3DO and Jag would be by far the easiest to hook up to, but due to various prototyping setbacks, I've somehow ended up with only ONE working HDMI board now, and that's staying firmly in it's Dreamcast home, and will be posted off to the MyLifeInGaming guys very soon. But, there's no technical reason at all why the same (older) board can't be used in many other retro consoles / computers, apart from some simple voltage translation for the "5 Volt" era machines. There are obviously some machines that can't easily be modded for true digital HDMI though, because they don't expose any digital video busses. The only way you would be able to extract that "data" is by implementing some of the original video hardware on the FPGA itself. Notable examples include the SNES and Mega Drive / Genny, which is unfortunate, given how popular they are. That's not to say that it's impossible by any means, it would just take a LOT of figuring out, and FPGA magic. Things like the new Super NT are great though, as they help preserve the logic of the original hardware, and may be one of the only ways that future generations will be able to enjoy the older machines as the original hardware eventually fails.

Another old school Dreamcaster here, bought mine on UK launch day and had about two dozen games for it eventually. My favourite was Soul Calibur which looked so amazing I really couldn't believe this was running on a home console connected to my telly. I played it for hours and hours until I had unlocked every fighter and every alternative costume or weapon set. I sold my DC long ago, but nowadays reliving those fun, nostalgic days thanks to an amazing software emulator called Redream. This thing is flawless on PC and Android, the only caveat is it doesn't support games which were built on top of Windows CE, yet, but the rest of them work great.

I think it's the greater variety of fish that makes it more interesting, so you have to think more about lures and reeling them in is different each time. Plus you have the aquarium for collectable items. I also imported Daytona USA from Japan. There was no way I was waiting 3 months for the UK release as I loved the arcade version. It's still to this day my most expensive game at £55 which is a lot when you're a student in 1995! Still nothing compared to AES carts, mind! Oh, and that reminds me. Utopia Bootdisc really isn't meant as an import enabler. It was created mainly to boot pirated "backups" before self-booting discs was a thing. It won't work with several games, and will often not force 60Hz. DC-X, DC-IE, and Codebreaker do a much better job. Codebreaker is the best.

Nice video! Just found your channel the other day and have been watching youf vids for hpurs. :) The paper thingies in Japanese Dreamcast games are spinecards. They are placed on the spine of the case, and then it is shrinkwrapped. I don't really see a big point to them, all CDs seem to have them in Japan. Just additional writing, flashy taglines and info... Since the spinecard can't be held once unwrapped, people either put it inside next to the manual or lose it. ^^ Also, Simon was 99% sure Sturmwind was also on Neo Geo. The 1% win though, it is a DC excludive, and amazing! :) It was made by two brothers from Germany, all by themselves, and looks gorgeous. The very common situation of Dreamcast and Neo Geo cross development is mainly thanks to NG Dev Team. They are mostly into Neo Geo, but made DC versions because those sold a lot. Basically cross financing their Neo Geo love and minimizing risk. They have since stopped due to losing their DC coder though.

The Utopia Bootdisc was also used to Boot pirated games without the proper Bootfiles (1ST_READ.BIN or BOOT.BIN) present on the Disc (which covers most of the P2P releases). But some games on the other hand had the bootfiles present (non P2P releases) which means most of the scene releases had them present (from releasegroups/crackinggroups like ECH, PDX, KAL etc) and were selfbooting without the use of the Utopia Bootdisc.

I was a huge Sega fan from the Mega Drive through to the Dreamcast. But the most important thing for me was the release of Shenmue. It was a masterpiece. I basically bought the original Xbox because I thought Shenmue 3 was going to come out on it. I then brought a PS4 solely because Shenmue 3 was released on it. The game and the sequels were that influential that whatever console the next one (if it happens) is released on is where I will follow.

When I had a Dreamcast I bought an imported copy of Ikaruga to use with the boot disc I had at the time but it would only allow import games to run at PAL 50hz rather than the native NTSC 60hz, because the PAL Dreamcast boot sequence ran at 50Hz, so the console was still in 50hz mode when Ikaruga loaded via the boot disc and there was no option in any import games to select 50 or 60hz. I mean, why would there be...Ikaruga at 50hz was just terrible.

Yet another project I've been meaning to finish for years. lol Mr Charlie beat me to it though, and it looks like his design works great. I thought of using a Wiimote sensor for tracking a long time ago, but I thought the latency would be too high to make it useful for light guns. Apparently I was wrong. :p I think he's still working on that stuff? He did an interview on RetroRGB (Bob's) channel a few months ago. If you just had the analog video (opamp) part of the circuit, the tiny sensor (camera) from the Wiimote, and a small Arduino or ESP module, you wouldn't even need the whole Rasp Pi + Bluetooth setup at all. It's very easy to just read the tracking dot values directly from the Wiimote camera. It just means that it would need to be wired, which isn't a big deal, as almost all of the older light gun systems are wired anyway. Actually, you could make it wireless with two ESP modules as well, just by sending the tracking dot coords to the second module that grabs the video signal. Hmmm. (which would be ideal for the Menacer gun and Super-scope. Not sure if it definitely works with those, though, as they use an IR receiver.)

For a collector, this guy seem a little lost when it comes to his comments about the dreamcast and first person shooters. Dreamcast was probably the best console, even far surpressing what xbox has now, even with the XBOX One X. The dreamcast supported both keyboard and mouse in games. I played Quake 3 Arena on the dreamcast with the dreamcast keyboard and mouse for a long time, not only did I play against other dreamcast users, but again something microsoft is trying today with cross platform play, I was also able to play against PC gamers in Quake 3. The problem was lack of updates on the Dreamcast, once the PC side of things updated the server software I couldn't play against them unless they kept an old version. Half Life on the Dreamcast would have been great, the dreamcast control pad may have been a little clunkly for FPS games, but considering there were plenty of keyboard and mice in all my llocal stores for the Dreamcast, and they weren't super expensive either, it could have changed history when it comes to how we play FPS games on consoles. Still, even without the games, the keyboard and mouse made for great web browsing experience, even if the slow dial up was a little off putting. Even on the back of the box for Rail Road Tycoon ii at 00:46:07, it says supports mouse. This is how you get to play real time strategy games on the console. Dreamcast a head of it's time man, a head of it's time.

+Simon Johnny yes indeed I did see that about the mouse (and can't comment on Simes behalf of course) but the mouse on RT2 would have been the exception not the norm so adaptations would have been made which are always interesting to me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Sorry, I realise I've must have come across as a little brash. It wasn't my intention. I too had a PC for gaming, Sime... but of course Soulcalibur did it for me. Still, I really miss my dreamcast. A young lad with a lot of disposable income... I had most of the games I could find at my local ebags and game stores. I ended up giving the entire thing to my nephew as a stepping stone into gaming. A lot of people say piracy killed the dreamcast because it was so easy to do in the end, but personally I think it was more about lack of storage for game updates and DLC, something the XBOX came along with and dominated. However, at least in the UK market, the lack of a LAN version or even the ability to purchase a LAN model to replace the dial up modem was a huge issue. The console was released just as people were getting broadband connections as common place in the home, and dial up even then was still quite expensive pay by the minute in most cases. As I said, I was a PC gamer, so it wasn't much of an issue for me to setup a remote dial service using my PC's old dial up modem when I already had a broadband connection for free internet access with the dreamcast. For what it was the dreamcast was a very nice box for internet gaming, I honestly think it was just a head of it's time. Games like Quake 3 Arena, or Phantasty Star Online (and MMORPG at that!) as well as smaller games like ChuChu Rocket just made for a nice experience for a console. Of course we don't even think about those things anymore, if a game is multiplayer we just expect it to work online. Anyway., thanks for the video it was nice to have a bit of a flash back and hear you guys talk about it. I wish I could have been there lol. Very nice collection you have.

As to the failing of the DC: cost of the thing and competition. The piracy that has been touted as its failing, that came mostly after Sega already gave up (internally) on the console. Sega staff leaked the information for piracy (so goes the rumor) as a way to not let the system completely die.
