Seeking Searchers For Missing Person Dennis Burton in Death Valley/ Panamint Mountains 3/2/24
The Wonderhussy Report 2.28.24
A woman recently emailed me, asking if I knew anyone who could take her out to Panamint Valley to look for a missing person named Dennis Burton, whose truck had been found abandoned with an empty gas tank in Goler Wash. Cathy runs an organization called the Fowler-O'Sullivan Foundation, which searches for missing hikers even after official Search and Rescue efforts have ended. We ended up rounding up a group of dedicated locals, and headed out to Goler Canyon to see what we could see -- and to set up a base camp for the official, methodical grid search this coming weekend (3/2-3/3/24).
If you are interested in joining the search for Dennis Burton the weekend of March 2-3, 2024, the base camp will be placed at or near these GPS coordinates:35°52'49.1"N 117°11'00.1"W
Drive to Ballarat, CA, then turn right (south) on Wingate Road and follow that along the base of the Panamints toward Coyote Canyon Rd./ Goler Wash. until you see a big camp of several vehicles, including Unkle Gnome’s yellow FJ and Linda’s blue Jeep.
There is NO WATER and there are NO FACILITIES onsite - so please come prepared with EVERYTHING you need to dry camp in the wilderness. There is no cell signal, but there will probably be Starlink/ Wi-Fi for emergency comms. Be advised!

Looks like the weather is taking a nasty turn this weekend -- but as far as I know, they are still planning to be out there searching. So if you do decide to go out and help, just be careful -- and be prepared for some seriously nasty winds!!

This is something I'd love to do were I in southern California or Nevada rather than Texas. I've participated in searches for people on the Texas plains who ran out of gas and got lost. Most important thing is to know where you've checked and map it meticulously so you can pick up the search at another time knowing exactly where to start. Well, 2nd most important as the most important is for all searches to get back home safely themselves. Good luck to all of you

A sad tale. Too bad the family didn’t get closure. Kudos to volunteers who helped, these are good people!
w/h Drones would be a must for next weekend......wouldn't they? God bless Kathy, and all the searchers, everyone bring plenty of water.
Thousands of images have been searched from drone flights with no luck. An incredibly sad story of someone suffering from dementia who may have felt so scared and confused.
All the best in your search this weekend!! Stay safe and hydrated!!
I followed the Kris Fowler case for a couple years and heard about the other hiker who was from Ireland. I was a potential PCT hiker. It’s crazy what can possibly happen on trail. Good luck finding him! I fully agree “closure” is better than not knowing! Being a hiker you’d be surprised how far someone can walk in a day. Bring a drone! And my guess is he probably tried to find cover or shelter from the sun. So look for potential cave like features. Which makes it tougher to find him.

I agree with this post. However, what physical shape was this 69-yr-old gentleman in? Of course, observing dementia in family members, behavior varies, I guess. They might continue walking and memory tricks them into already drinking water 5 mins. ago vs 5 hours -unable to realize the danger they're in. There has to be a limit in distance from the truck, you'd think, that he'd have walked to. I wish the search team every success in finding him. Thank you to the foundation and volunteers for this valuable service.

Thank you to Wonderhussy for spreading the word. And Thank you to all the people willing to travel that hard terrain and look for him. My prayers for a successful search 🙏❤️
I would have the leader of the group put together a map of all the grids that get searched and publish it on their website asking the public if they go out to that area to search the unsearched areas. Be sure to note what was not searched in the grid search (didn't go into this mine or look through this cabin, etc.). What might help speed up the search is to do an aerial search with drones as well. I hope you find him!
Wonder you are a wonderful person. Love all you do. ❤
This is one of the reasons I love life. Not because of the grief and uncertainty of a missing loved one, and I wish all the volunteers the best for this weekend. But I will bet all the money I have in my bank account that when Sarah started these videos, she never thought she would be helping such a noble and necessary cause. The lesson, never assume where life will take you, just embrace the journey!
Drones and lots of them.
Sarah Jane, you have purpose. I am sure many others beside myself appreciate what you do with your platform over and beyond storytelling and off-road V-logging. Hats off to Kathy too. Cute little green alien antenna cap.
Thanks!
Sarah...This video may be more important than any you've ever done. I hope many of the countless number of people who love you and what you do will certainly feel compelled to lend themselves to this great cause. I can't thank you, Cathy and all of the volunteers enough for what you all are doing to help Donna locate her husband and get some answers. I hope you will do a follow-up video and let us know the extent of the search project.
Great video, hope they get plenty of volunteers ⭐️😎🤩

Thanks Sarah Jane...for bringing Cathy and the F-O'F organization to our attention. And thanks and best wishes to Cathy and her organization. R.I.P, Dennis Burton.
Always showing the beautiful side of your soul Sarah. Thats what makes you so memorable. I wish I could be there and help in the search. Its beyond the point where a tracker would be of any use. But still theres those hunches you get from experience. At least trying is something. I hope someone does find him and he returns to his family. Stay amazing Sarah.

Outstanding example of the ability of strangers coming together in attempt to help someone they never knew. This makes you believe that not all is lost with humanity. Hopefully this effort will be successful and his remains can be recovered and returned to his family.. Very sad story of someone dying alone in the desert.

Probably a day early to get the word out, and give people a little extra time to join the search
To try to get into Dennis’ mindset, the logical thing to do is to get into his wife’s head, recalling their hikes together; moreover, and better yet, if his wife was not his primary hiking partner, have her put you in touch with the person that was. If neither of them can join you, then the second best thing is to send them a video, NOT STILL PHOTOS of where you are, showing and describing the circumstances and terrain, and ask them where from there is the most likely direction Dennis would have wanted to go, and why. The why is most important because that question is how you get inside his head. People do things and go places for reasons, his hiking partner would instinctually know that about him, his pursuits and interests that would have guided his actions. Given the distance that he had traveled already, knowing what was behind him, it is more likely that he would have pressed on forward and upward, rather than attempt to go back downhill from where he came. Hence, if you come upon a fork, again show them the video of the area/terrain, and have them guess, speculate, or in some cases with certainty instruct you which fork to take, and why. … just a thought. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR SEARCH! 😊
Leaving a note and knowing that he ran out of gas, speaks of some clarity of mind. My gut says he headed back towards civilization. May have branched off at some point to seek shelter. Possibly became lost doing so. Of course, I’m no professional…just the first thoughts that came to mind. I hope he will be found soon. 💕
Thanks for what you are doing. Have kids in parahmp, been watching for a while. They saw you at the gas station, and I said leave her alone. We need to have a regular life too. Great job I am hooked. No network crap for me.
What great group of people helping families find closure, hopefully the man’s remains will be found soon! Great video!

WOW N YIKES....AWESOME YOU ARE THE BEST....
Nice to know that there are still people out there that are willing to volunteer themselves and time when Officials have stopped searching for lost people, sorry to say but at this point a cadaver dog certainly would be helpful along with drones, be safe guys.

I know he was lost 2 years ago and there have been no signs of his remains. I wish Godspeed to those searching for Dennis. Bless all who voluteer and Wonderhussy too if you can do this on this weekend. I'm sure the family would be so grateful! So there is a Panamint Lake there too? Wow.
Please tell Cathy I think he climbed for cell service. Stand where his truck was and pick the easiest route up. People like to try and walk to a light source in deserts when they're lost. See if any light can be seen at night from the high ground above his truck spot. The line between that spot and the light should be checked. A mountain Lion may have attacked him or dehydration. There is a very high likelihood that he's within 1 mile of that truck. Best of luck and Happy Hunting Cathy.

@RickWalshCleaning I don't have the exact grid coordinate. I'm told it was on the road just outside of the park boundary. That would be about 1 mile east of the Barker Ranch. I doubt he's very close to the truck as the Sar search would have used dogs and drones and a body in the desert would smell and have birds circling.

This is right down Sarah's alley. Being our adventurous hero she's right in there helping in what ever way she can. Thank you to Sarah and those around her for what you are doing to help this family find their loved one... God speed Sarah!!😢
To far away to help directly , so I will pray for closer and everybody be safe.
It would be helpful if the previous searchers documented where they searched.
Thank you so much for helping Cathy plan & publicize this search. She's a great person and the Fowler / O'Sullivan Foundation is a great organization. If I ever go missing, she's exactly the person I'd want on my case. I always enjoy your content but this one is special to me.
Leaving a note behind shows clear thinking. He should have walked back toward where he came from, possibly trying short cuts is my guess. Prayers Up 🙏
Good luck and yes it is pretty amazing the number of folks (all over the country) who seemingly vanish w/out a trace. An honorable quest to be sure.
A really good cause, Sarah. My wife and I got a bit lost looking for the Manson capture site from the DV side back in the '80s, and would be happy there were folks like you out looking if we didn't come out.
husband speaking age 81. My wife and I operated 3 adult care homes for 17 years. Would never do it again even if I was the resident. We had a few very confused folks over the years. One wanted to go to work, get dressed up and wanted to walk out to our car. We had to drive him around for a little bit then tell him work was over so lets go home. Another man seemed ok but would want to leave the home at night. We put a plastic tree in front of the door and that confused him so much he would stay. Told his wife that a strange thing happened each night, a tree grows in front of the front door and I can't get out. You just can't understand what they are thinking of.
Being Death Valley he probably headed for a shelter like the mine shaft or those other structures. Maybe fell down a shaft or is hidden in some indoor partition.
Maybe he decided he wanted to die in DV. It's not a horrible idea. After 30 years in the middle of the Mojave, I don't want to be preserved and buried in a box in a cemetery.

I want to go to ONE of the many deserts in Nevada or California in the winter/spring...SO badly....
Good luck finding Dennis or at least what happened to him.
It's Wonderful Wonderhussy to see supporting such causes. I feel like your journalist skills are really kicking in!!
If I was anywhere near this I would do this happily. Hoping this search has positive results.
After the Barker Ranch you run into the Myers Ranck!!
In my mind at his age, I would probably head for the highest point to see where I was at, no water and what?... I Don't Know, Do you?...
So, if he left a note stateing that he was out of gas, to me he was definitely in his right mind at the time.. so naturally if we run out of gas or have vehicle trouble s we would go back the way we came, right? I would. Has a SAR dog been used? One that alerts to humane remains. Wish I lived near by I would definitely join in the search. Hope he's found soon. I love these kind of videos wonderhussey, keep them coming.

The weather in Death Valley was in the 80-90's last September, which isn't too bad. However, someone lost and out of fuel and water could be at serious risk of dehydration. Really appreciate you getting the word out and best of luck finding this man. Ramona isn't too far from where we live, my thoughts and prayers go to this mans family! - I would like to add, if you are ever exploring the desert, it is very easy to become lost or disoriented. Leave signs of your direction of travel. Travel during the cooler hours, seek shelter from the mid-day sun. Your best bet is to try to make it back to a main road or highway.

If he was showing symptoms of early signs of dementia anything is possible and you have to throw out rational thought when analyzing the case. Even if he was despondent compounded with dehydration and just memory loss it could cause a person to make mistakes we from the outside would deem impossible to make. I'd say unless there's specific evidence to show anything resembling foul play then you gotta go with disorientation and exposure.
