SEED STORIES | Love In A Mist: An Ethereal Beauty

Nigella damascena is better known by its common name, Love In A Mist. And perhaps no variety of the gorgeous buttercup relative is better known that the one perfected by -- and named for -- Gertrude Jekyll. In the 19th and early 20th century, Jekyll brought her painterly sensibilities to bear on English garden design and breeding. Miss Jekyll Love In A Mist looks delicate, but grows wildflower hardy! I love hearing the backstories with Michelle narrating. There is so much information packed into a few minutes. This also brings out the nerd in me and makes me want to learn further about these varieties and there cultivators.

A favorite in my garden. They do self sow freely if you miss a pod and transplant easily. If you neglect dead heading you will have an abundance ofvseedlings forvsome time...note the free seeding comment. Really easy to save seeds from too.

Another flower that comes in blue. Hooray! Not to mention the striking seed pods. Would “Love in a Mist” be considered an alpine? I’ve found the overall alpines don’t like the heat and humidity in Zone 8.

I would not consider this variety alpine

Can I use love-in-a-mist seeds as a spice?

The seeds are considered edible and have a spicy, nutmeg flavor when finely ground. However its advised to only eat/use small amounts as the seeds can contain the toxic alkaloid damascenin!

Every time she says Jekyll I die a little inside, sorry. Not used to hearing it pronounced that way!

Ah yes the American pronunciation is hard set from when our high school teachers introduce Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde! ;)
