Seed Sowing In January / Lisianthus, Sea Holly & Feather Grass // Cottoverdi

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today I’m sowing seeds. There are a few seeds that need to be sown early to give the plants time to develop and flower this season. I’m starting Lisianthus, Eryngium (Sea Holly) and Stipa capillata (Feather Grass) today - 10th January 2024

    I like the look of Lisianthus. Hope the seeds germinate for you. I'm trying something new this year after watching Diane's "Down To Earth" gardening channel. She successfully germinated a lot of seeds solely in slightly damp vermiculite. I'm glad that you mentioned the size of seed trays Annette as I used to fill the long ones only to find that I had too many of one variety of seeds. Now I use the half sized seed trays or modules like yours. Gardening is a continual learning curve isn't it?

    Yes, I'm continually learning and experimenting - it's so much fun and I love to be able to enjoy this hobby all year round - there's always something to sow!! 🤣

    I did sow my sea holly a completely different way since they need light for germination and a few times that I had tried to grow them on the soil surface they didn't fare well, I germinated mine in a wet towel to be put at the top of soil as soon it germinated, and I used a well draining soil since the seem to hate wetness and so far they are doing fine. my method did not have any cold treatment since I did not know I should have done so and it still worked.

    Oh wow. Thank you so much for letting me know. That's really interesting. I'm just following the directions on the seed packet since it's my first time sowing them. To be honest, I don't think it should be that hard to germinate them since the self-seed all over my garden already - just not these white ones that I want!

    Do you have any more videos of the lisianthus and do you fertilise them?

  • @cottoverdi

    @cottoverdi

    5 ай бұрын

    Hi Marie, I will be posting a seedling update video later this week but the seedlings are super tiny still so I'm not fertilising them yet. I sow into multipurpose compost so it already has nutrients for the first 6 weeks or so. Hope this helps.

    @@cottoverdi at least 70% have germinated, do I take them off the heat and remove the lid or keep them as they are for a bit longer? Thank you you’re a massive help x

    Do you need grow lights for the Lisianthus as well as heat? When do you turn the heat off?

  • @cottoverdi

    @cottoverdi

    6 ай бұрын

    Hi Marie, yes, it is helpful to use grow lights but I haven;t set up my seed starting shelves yet so for now I'll just hope that there is sufficient light coming through the glass doors (They are pretty big!). I started seeds without heat mats or lights for many many years, so although these things are indeed helpful, and I use them now, it's not impossible to start seeds without them - you just need patience and to pick your timings carefully.

    @@cottoverdi i have a heated propagator that I’ve never used and thought I’d give it a try with lisianthus but I’m going to put it on my dining table as I have no where else to put it so I’m a little nervous that it may go up in flames or something 🙈 do you think it will be ok? I don’t have lights yet I’m just hoping the heat will be ok

    @@mariebutler6912It’s just a box with a heating element and things don’t get excessively hot, so I consider it a low risk activity. 🫰Good luck with trying it out.
