See How Life Has Changed in the Middle East Over 58 Years | Short Film Showcase

Ойын-сауық

Colbert Held is a former United States Foreign Service officer who has amassed a photo collection spanning 48 years and 17 countries. He did so to have a detailed, photographic record of all the landscapes he visited, a complete geographical archive of his own. What's particular about his collection is that it captured the Middle Eastern history that escaped documentation. Viewed now, photographs from the past reveal an evolution from an "older" way of living to modernity-or a look back to better times pulverized by current wars. Filmed by Jennifer Smart in collaboration with the Middle East Institute, this short documentary was inspired by Baylor University's Oral Memoirs of Colbert Colgate "Cokie" Held.

I worked in Kuwait from 2006-2012 I loved it! I was a US Government contractor (Still Photographer).I meet some very very nice folks and it opened my mind to other cultures and people. I felt safer in the streets of Kuwait than I do in Philadelphia, PA and Camden NJ! They have the best malls and I always like to say "America taking over Kuwait on fast food restaurant at a time"

Agreed. At the same time though i see that denmark at least tries its best to make them integrate as fully as possible. Of course not every single one of them (unfortunately) is willing to integrate. I'm worried, specially considering that denmark (i live here) has always been regarded as a safe country and people are not used to immigrants not willing to assimilate with europe (for example in italy we are used to that...unfortunately). We'll see the future.... I don't like this insane wave of non european immigration, but at least i hope most of them will integrate and learn danish values. I'm italian and i came here a while ago, but since the first days i have started studying the danish language, learning the danish values and i always have the deepest admiration and respect for what i believe is the best country in the world (denmark). I also have the most sincere respect for the danish lifestyle, laws and culture, but i'm not so arrogant to label myself as one of them because i'll always be an outsider in their eyes, and i can understand that. I have always adored denmark since i was little and people here really appreciate when you're willing to integrate fully into their amazing and rich culture.

After being Danish, French, Italians and so on, we are Europeans. We all share the same core culture. All of us are either secular or christian. We can all eat pork and drink alcohol, doesn't matter if it's beer, wine or vodka, we all CAN and usually do it. We CAN legally migrate between countries as if someone moves from state to state in the US. I would never label myself as a Dane because I'm not one of them (although I could pass as one of them). Point being made is that we Europeans get along with each other and cherish each other's cultures and that it's what the EU should be all about, a Union that serve us, the Europeans, not the whole damn World, especially the Middle East. We have many historic examples both in the West and East of Europe that we do NOT get along with islam unless if we are being subjugated by it.

+HenrySims You are incorrectly generalising yet I am the idiot? There is no such thing as a superior culture, the fact that you would distrust anyone based on a generalisation is plain ignorance. The Portuguese were one of the initiators of subjugation through imperialism, and thus are a lot more deserving of mistrust. The world is changing and the far right whining will change nothing.

Imagine calling yourself "National Geographic" and not knowing what the Middle East means. Where is Egypt in this? You do know that the middle east is a transcontinental region that includes countries in multiple continents, right? That is why we call it "Middle East" instead of "western Asia" because the region is not just exclusive to western Asia. "The Middle East is a transcontinental region centered on Western Asia, Turkey (both Asian and European), and Egypt (which is mostly in North Africa)"

I won't claim that buildings are of more value than human lives but it never ceases to overwhelm me with sorrow when I hear of these ancient dies of beauty being senselessly destroyed. Artefacts are a tribute to the people who built and cherished them, and when you destroy all artefacts you destroy the physical history of those people. This is a beautiful series and I am not educated enough to make a value judgment about the Middle East but all I can say is that I wish for peace, tolerance, and justice for all.

when I first went the Middle East my cousin and I entered from Bulgaria. I had been reading Middle East history since I was in primary school, a historical figure I admire the most is a Muslim. When we entered Turkey, my first visit to a Muslim country I was so exited I went around and shook every body attending the border by the hand, they must have thought I was a bit crazy. Later on in Syria, we came to the Euphrates River. We stopped before crossing, I hopped out of the car and just stared at the river, it was like a religious experience.

I appreciate that they use the word Cedar as a revolutionary word in Lebanon, seeing as - long, long ago - Cedar of Lebanon was known throughout the developed ancient world. Particularly in Egypt. Obviously it wasn't all that they were known for, but I'd imagine if you were to mention Lebanon to an Ancient Greek or Egyptian, they'd think of luxury and, at the time, revolutionary Cedar wood. Edit - Also, I'm from Philly, so the reference to Philly cheesesteaks as culture made me happy. Carry on.

Kuwait is the first Gulf country to have cars, cinemas and the first to own an astronomy observatory. Even before the discovery of oil people were very hard working, Kuwaitis were very good at building ships and collecting pearls and catching fish, and trading with India and Persia, it still has the most distinguished Arabic dialect in the Gulf due to trades with Persia and India. The sea was so important to Kuwaitis that a ship is actually the symbol in Kuwait's national emblem (look it up). Kuwait is also the first Gulf country to make TV shows and still has the most famous actors in the Gulf. Kuwait used to be called the pearl of Gulf, although UAE is much better today, Kuwait still holds the title for the highest currency in the world, 1 KWD = 3.3 USD.
