See before you shoot | Photography VLOG #9

In this video I talk about seeing before you shoot - how can you actually do to see before you hit the shutter? Why are you sometimes "in the zone" and other times not?

This was not at all what I was looking for, but I'm really glad I found it. Thanks for allowing a me a minute to step back and see the world a little differently.

Hi Frederik, great video! I loved the kitchen photo and the almost abstract composition of the chair shape and shadow. The metaphor of brain as city with different eras of buildings; I quite like that, never heard it expressed that way before! On the other hand, Betty Edwards, Kimon Nicolaedes, I spent a lot of time in the library as a teenager reading their books and everything on the shelves around them, so it’s always a joy to be reminded of the lessons from that time; I guess for me it’s a trip down some of the older sections of the city. One thing that struck me when you brought up the “seeing upside-down” trick was that recently I’ve been photographing with a waist-level viewfinder on my Mamiya RB67 because I just got an instant film back for it-and while it doesn’t flip the image upside-down, it does mirror it horizontally. Maybe that has played a part in my feeling more creative recently with this camera: an unfamiliar mirrored perspective, the “new camera” feeling of inspiration, and the “instant” feedback from instant film all working together.

Thank you Christopher! Interesting with the mirrored image in the viewfinder - with your experience it should actually be an option to have the image mirrored or flipped in the electronic viewfinder on a mirrorless camera! That would spark some creativity! 🙂

What a ‘DEEP’ Vlog/Video, Dr. Frederik Boving! 😆 You know I mean well. Excellent, in all seriousness. Wish you had put this out before my Father in law’s 90th Birthday!!! All Shutterbugs would do well to use and apply this philosophy, myself included, when going out to take photos. The curious thing that happens with me, ( and this kind of ties in with your video, ) is I snap all kinds of crazy things with my IPhone. I ‘see’ something that captures my eye, and I take the photo. But I find myself hesitant to do the same with my actual digital cameras? Now I will take a lot of photos, if I am doing a Portrait session, or shooting Wildlife/ action, etc. etc., but other times, I only take a few shots? It’s not about lack of memory cards, well, I don't know what it is? This video made me think, Frederik. Great content. I like this style and content, and hope you consider doing more like this. Please like and share this video, fellow YOUTubers! Thanks!

Thank you for your kind words George! Much appreciated as always! Yes, I guess there are no easy answers. But we should be able to fire away as crazy with the DSLRs as with the smartphones - the cost of an image is just a few kilobytes that can quickly be recovered!

Another great video with a very important message. :) Because you were asking for suggestions, Frederik, what I wpuld enjoy to see is a lens review of your style - nice, relaxed, practical and non-intrusive from opinion or prederense point of view. :) This is how I found you sometime ago. :) Maybe your view of going out light equipped, just with a prime lens or two or these one or two or three primes compared to your most practical/ preferred zoom. Just an example. :] Have a great week, thank you, Yaroslav.

Really wonderful video and great insights into the workings of the dualistic mind. It's interesting when we go back and look at our photography with fresh eyes and can recognize when we were in that opened and relaxed state... and when we were not.

Good comment Desmond, but be careful, you’ll fall into ‘my camp,’ and restrict yourself unnecessarily? See my comment! Don’t be afraid to experiment, and you will be surprised at what you might have thought was not photo worthy, and it turns out quite the opposite! Peace

I would also recommend to you, Galen Roswell’s “Inner Game of Outdoor Photography “. Basically a compilation of his essays from Outdoor Photographer Magazine with his supportive outstanding photographs. Much about the philosophy, psychology and ethics of landscape photography by one who has had one of the greatest influence on modern practice.

Hi Gary, I believe you meant Galen Rowell? Sorry, Only corrected You for sake of clarity for others. Yes, Highly Recommend Galen’s books, and to check out his Photography. He was known to capture some great shots, using only a ‘cheap’ N65 film camera! Thom Hogan knew him. Thom doesn’t publish any books of that nature, but I can highly recommend Thom’s Guide Books on camera use. They are thorough, and he covers every recent Nikon body made. I hope you don't mind me referencing that Frederik?! It was sad to lose Galen, and his wife, due to an aircraft crash. He was one heckuva Mountaineer as well! Gone too soon! 😑 Peace

I followed you advice and purchased some of the books you recommended, Have finished The Meaning in the Making and working on Photography and the Art of Seeing. Thanks for pointing me in this direction. I wonder if film cameras helped us slow down and observe. It was too expensive to just snap away without considering what we see first.

Wow Jim, you work ‘fast!’ 😃 I will definitely concur with Frederik, and rec’d Freeman Patterson’s Book. You might check out Ansel Adam’s books as well. Shooting film will (should) make a Photographer ‘think’ about the shot, before releasing the shutter. I use to have a little log book, and I would record my settings, etc. Aww, those were the days. 😆 We are spoiled these days with digital cams and their files. Appreciate your comment, and happy shooting. Best

Thank you Jim, yes, film shooting definitely requires more precision and planning so it could be that - just like slow food - we need to re-invent slow shooting.

It is important to maintain the natural instincts, the danger of becoming introspective to the point of degeneration

The way the world is developing this day and age, the danger of being too introspective is the least of our worries IMHO.
