This is terrific. Thank you for your work. This is so important. Homeless shelters likewise need recovery meetings in-house, to make it as easy as possible for people staying in the shelters to attend recovery meetings. Of course, the default that most people think of is to offer 12-step programs. However, if it's easier to attend a 12-step program in-house, than to attend a secular program elsewhere, which might require driving or finding a ride to the meeting, the shelter client will likely attend the in-house program, and essentially be pressured into doing so because it's easier to attend. Also, if the shelter receives any public funding, shouldn't 12-step and other faith-based programs be disallowed? Wouldn't having those programs in publicly funded shelters be a violation of funding laws? Please advocate for secular programs to be offered in shelters, jails, etc. And promote that Smart Recovery programs offer their services to their local shelters, jails, and prisons, etc.

We need secular alternatives. This way my Hindu and Sikh friends feel comfortable going to a meeting so there is not one specific religion(usually Christianity or Judaism) being overly discussed at meetings. Look around you and be honest. The meetings are 99.99999999999999999999 Jesus. The other is 0 .00000000000000001 Judaism. Excuse me? I have met 2 Hindus in 34 YEARS,1 Muslim zero Sikhs. Not very welcoming. Make meetings more neutral. Keep the proselytizing (converting) out please.

Proselytizing ought to be called out as the 14th step. Just as the 13th step is wrong, so is trying to sell stuff at meeting ( makeup companies etc) or hawking religion.
