    Just spotted a fluid leak from my hood latch so I might need this. Looks like yet another job for the winter. The joys of owning Jags (1965 3.8S, 1983 Lynx XJS & 2005 XK8 + the wife's 2010 XF). Never bored. Many thanks for the video.

    Hello John, Rob here! I love what you have done. We have learned so much about our XK8 from watching “To the Garage”. We used the secret keyhole to open the boot and I hooked up the battery as you suggested, godsend. We live in the San Fernando Valley, near Los Angeles and we are big fans of yours. All the best.

    I’m lucky I stumbled upon your channel. My dad tried to put up the top on my XK8 while going ~5 mph when it started to rain. The hood retracted half way through and got out of sync with the latch on the front, leaving it partially open. I never would of known I could manually operate it without this video.

    It happens Jacob. Thanks for watching👍. If the Hood sinks back under its own weight as you get over 5mph rather than staying still then check that the tap (the one I showed you to open for manual operation )is fully closed.

    Excellent videos, thanks. I haven't seen all yet so you may have this covered but I discovered one more secret several years ago... I found that the upper Lambda sensors can be accessed through the AC drain holes at the end of the foot wells! It's too perfect for it to be accidental although Jaguar themselves forgot and recommend removing the coolant reservoir etc and going from above! I posted my discovery on Jaguarforums as "very easy upstream O² sensor replacement". So there you go, Jaguar didn't always complicate things but they certainly did try! SapphireXKR

    @@ToTheGarage Thanks, it is quite a niche one! I only discovered it as I lay on the floor looking upwards, having pretty much given up on removing the sensor from beneath the car (using every extension I owned!) when I saw what looked like a grommet in the bulkhead, investigation in the footwell confirmed what I thought that I had found n it was out 5 minutes later! There is however a potential fly in the ointment for some. I have heard that they actually changed the position on later 4.2 cars to "help" access but rendered this forgotten method useless in doing so! Good luck

    I tried my boot lock for the first time at the weekend, and of course it had seized up and wouldn't work. I don't currently have the means to trickle-charge the battery so the car would have been potentially vulnerable to going flat with no easy means of getting at the battery. Fortunately in my case, I didn't need to pull out all the boot panels to service the lock, a couple of sprays of GT85 into the keyhole got it moving again! For my other car I use a solar trickle charger in the rear window and that does just enough to keep the battery topped up so will be getting the same one for the Jaaaag. Is it a fiddly job to run cables from the cabin into the boot? Does lots of stuff need to be pulled up to run the cables through or is it not too bad? (It's the coupe rather than the convertible)

    Excellent video John. If I may share some info. I don’t drive my car very often. And exactly as you said the low voltage on a battery is the source for many snags appearing on the car. What I did, I replaced the ordinary battery with the newest AGM technology . The battery that all the newest cars are using with START/STOP function. All snags disappeared, it lasts longer,it’s a bit more expensive but worth every quid. Cheers.

    I have "unlocked" (taken pressure off) the hydraulic cylinders before putting the top down without hydraulic power. This is done by manually grabbing the joint where the cylinder connects to the top bows and in a sense starting the movement on each side. Have you put yours down without performing that step?

    John I have an xk8 that is essentially identical to yours, with the exception of being left hand driven as I live in the state of Iowa USA. I have enjoyed watching your videos and although I have had the car for over 10 years, you have shown me many things I did not know, so thanks. The reason I'm writing to you is that I have an issue that I fear may become a bigger issue. When lowering the top on the car the front hydraulic latch does not seem to disengage properly. It eventually breaks free with a rather loud pop, but my fear is that it puts too much stress on the line and may lead to a catastrophic failure of the system euphemistically referred to as 'The green shower' where hydraulic fluid rains from the front overhead console. I was wondering if you had encountered this problem and have a solution for me. Warm regards Philip Kausalik

    Hi Jon. Thanks so much for all the amazing info you’ve shared! What a great channel. I recently suffered the dreaded “Green Shower” on my ‘99 XK8. I’ve managed to replace the latch hoses but while I had most of the interior out of the car I noticed that the left side ram appears to be leaking. Signs of fluid under the seat and also in the wheel arch. Do you know of anyone in the UK who can refurbish them? I’ve searched all over and can only find somewhere in the US that does it. Thanks again for all the insights!

Jaguar forms indicate gently/carefully pushing on roof rams to retract them, but i have found that very hard to do. I am hoping if i see what you do, maybe it would easier for me to di it on my car. Hello. I own a 2000 XKR. It was the last car my late husband bought in 2010. Sadly, he died in 2012 and I have been driving her since then. You've given me fabulous tips since I found your site and videos, but I can't find one which deals with fuses. I have a repeating problem with the driver seat fuse blowing - most recently when I picked up the car at the airport. Not very convenient. I know where all the facia fuses are and I know where the spares are. I believe I know the location of the relevant fuse - well, replacing it works! However, determined to understand the fuses, I compared the handbook illustration with the fuses in the two facia panels. The ampage I have in place corresponds ONLY SOMETIMES to the handbook illustration! Also, the facia panels each contain 2 rows of 10 and the illustrations have one row of 1 through 10, and the second row is 11 to 18. Can you help? I love my car!

    Thank you 😢but sad to say my 23 yr old 2000 XK8 Siver coupe has been deemed a total loss by the insurance company. Twenty-three years garage caps never let it see a speck of snow here in Michigan. Completely avoid driving on any days with rain in the forecast. Only 32,000 miles. I took the payout and kept the car paid the Salvage fee. Like just could not let it go, I have a lot of work ahead of me. I am going to use your helpful videos to get me through some stuff that is tricky he'll be starting it over the next few days and I really appreciate what you've done here I don't believe at all that it is a total loss, I think mainly because both airbags went off that that's kind of a deal-breaker. Okay this is the longest comment ever but I really wanted to say that the thermostat housing should be replaced at the very first sign of any coolant issues. The largest coolant line blew off twice on me while driving both times connected a new stronger hose clamp in it could not handle it, so I replaced it with a metal thermostat housing instead of the original OEM plastic and that fixed it all that is the only mechanical issue I've had on this car it is crazy

There is a cable that is supposed to release the top cover. That pulled off. I have repaired but not reinstalled the cable, as it appears to be easier to get at when the cover is up. How do I get that cover to release to manual operate the top?

    Its funny everyone is all worried about showing their license plates. You do realize your license plate is visible when you drive down the road, park at a store, park on the street, at your house. Etc, etc....

  • @ToTheGarage

    @ToTheGarage

    5 жыл бұрын

    I do get what you are saying Roger. And to be fair if any of my plates were accidentally shown on youtube it would not freak me out. The reasoning is the same as why most people transporting damaged cars on trailers cover the plates. BAD humans occasionally spot a smashed up silver Mercedes on a trailer and think. "Ive got a silver Mercedes too, I will put those plates on my car for the next month or so as that chap will obviously not be driving his around for a while". And for that month you end up collecting parking tickets and speeding fines. I think a lot of youtubers with car projects choose like me to cover their plates because often they show their motors during restoration or repair and effectively tell everyone when its coming off the road and when its going back on. Plus lets be honest its just real easy to cover them up. My T25 camper van has private plates (i did not buy them they were already on when I bought it) and they are easily remembered. Plus its not used for significant periods, so slightly more cautious about that one. The Jag, Np300 and Jeep are all used very regularly so much less of an issue. So not a particularly revelatory or exciting reason I'm afraid Roger. But thanks for taking the time to commment👍

  • @rogerphilabaum4563

    @@ToTheGarage really its just so many people are so paranoid about showing their plates especially on sites like Craigslist, Facebook, Etc... Cause they're worried about people stealing their info or something when what they don't seem to realize is any day of the week when their car is parked at the local Wal-Mart or grocery or anytime its out in the public its there to see by anyone walking or driving by so I think its kind of ridiculous and funny. No offense intended to you. I like the video and love the Xk8. 👍

    jason sandor hi Jason More than likely blown the fuse for the hydraulic pump. It will have got a spike of current when the starter kicked out. Can’t advise which fuse it is at the moment as I’m just about to set off for work . 😐 sorry. I’d check that first. If the fuse is intact or blows again undo the tap on the pump. Use the Allen key attached to the pump to release the latch on the screen top (remove the little plastic plug to the right of the interior mirror) Lower the hood manually. Re tighten the tap and then try raising it. This will test if the effort to unlatch the hood is the problem. 👍

    Hi John - love your videos - I have same as you in blue - I have another issue when battery fails and that is the windows, the little close when shutting doors fails. I now have drivers window stuck half way down. Its as if it can't remember where it should be! Have you had that issue? Pat

  • @knyppeldyna

    You have to recalibrate the windows and learn them how to raise to the top most position (fully closed) and to the lowest position (fully open). After installing the new or newly charged battery, turn on the ignition. Then press the button and keep it pressed to lower the window fully and wait a second or two. You will then hear a click in the door mechanism. That means that it has learnt where the bottom position is. Now do the same when raising the window and wait for the click. Do this with both windows from the drivers side window controls (I don't know if this works with the single button on the passenger's side). After this you will have to enter your radio-code to be able to use it. Good luck!

    Hi @@jonbush1055 I have this as a secrets video coming up soon. But As you need help now here is the written version or as best as it can be described anyway. Your remote needs re programming to your car. 1. Enter the car and sit in the Drivers seat. 2. Place the key in the ignition. 3. Hold the headlight flasher arm back - the blue “high beam” light will come on the dashboard and the headlights will come on. 4. Keep holding the headlight flasher back and turn the ignition key to position 1. 5. Release the flasher, and then flash the headlights FOUR TIMES. You will hear a “Beep” AND/OR see a small red light illuminate briefly on the Gear Selector on the fourth flash of the headlight - this is to confirm that the car has entered programming mode. 6. Program each transmittor (up to FIVE fobs can be programmed) by pressing any button on the fob. You will hear a “Beep” AND/OR see the red light on the Gear Selector with each press of a button. 7. The car must “Beep” or red light flash five times to complete programming. Therefore, if you are only programming one transmitter you should operate the transmitter 5 times. If you are programming two transmitters you will operate one transmitter twice, and three times on the other. 8. Wait for the car to exit programming - this will be indicated by a final “Beep” AND/OR the red light on the Gear Selector. 9. The remotes are now ready to use Hope his helps👍 John

    Hi John. Great resource as ever. Just noted my roof seems to be very slow recently. It actually gave up trying to close under what seemed like gravity today whilst only one third of the way there. Some manual encouragement helped it back into a closed position. Reading below is this something to do with needing to replace the hydraulic fluid? Doesn’t seem to be any mechanical issue and haven’t encountered any dashboard messages.

    Hello John and Mick. Greetings from California (San Francisco area). I bought my beautiful 2006 XK8 a few weeks ago. I have the same problem, however I am receiving the "Convertible not Latched" warning message on my dash. The top opens with no problem, but when I press the button to close, the top stops 1/3 of the way. I manually close it and the button works to close it. Any ideas? Hydraulic fluid? Electrical issues?

    Great question, that's why I was watching this video as I needed to drop my top, manually. I opened the reservoir petcock (so fluid could flow), unlatched the top hook with Allen key and I was able to push on/retract one of the roof rams (which was pretty hard to do) the other roof ram I either could not budge or maybe moved it a little? At thar point I closed the petcock, started the engine and depressed the top open button. The top came down (which) I needed it to do, but I was never able to do it completely manually. Prior, the day before the roof did not go up correctly and seemed to latch but ended with the "hood not latched" message. When that happens I need to drop the top manually to try to re-raise the roof and clear the previous problem.

I purchased a used 2005 XK8 convertible in 2021 and I love it! Your videos have helped increase my knowledge of the little known items relating to these cars. I have a question tho'. While I was rummaging in the trunk (boot) I observed a small toggle switch on the back of the passenger (right) side of the tail light cover. I cannot ascertain what it does. Can you or anyone shed some light as to the function of this switch? Thanks again for the videos and keep them coming. Ta,

    Yes. The gearbox from a diesel s type jaguar can be installed but you need a custom pedal box, clutch master and slave cylinder, bell housing adapter etc etc. Its not an easy or cheap job. I believe their are also complete kits available to use a toyota supra box. Converted cars are VERY rare. Read into that what you like?

    Maybe you have an answer: When I start my 2003 XK8 for the first time each day, it makes a whining noise, coming from the engine, does this for 5 to 10 sec. than stops, no noise for the rest of the day, no matter how many times I start it.

  • @ToTheGarage

    @ToTheGarage

    8 ай бұрын

    If its an electrical wining sound then its the throttle body calibrating itself. (very Normal) If its after the engine starts, and more mechanical, then it may be the auxilliary drive belt idler or tensioner belt pulley. When they start to wear, bearings give off a whine and often only when they are stone cold.

    The scariest thing happend 2 weeks ago in with my new xk8 convertable 2004 upgraded version with steel line pipes .i was searching for cd disc button then unaware id pressed DSC witch stands for Dynamic stability conyrole thinking it was the button for cd player . Suddenly my dash board light comes on saying cruise control not available and they ABS light is on to ???? Panic stations here we go big bill for repaire £££££ . Next day rings to book my car in to get repaired as i love my car im prepared to pay just get it fixed . Upset and feeling down that somethings already showing a fault within 2 months in.is this now going to be a on going problem Lesson 1 - dont fiddel with buttons if your not waring your glasses Lesson 2 always read your manual as i learned . Lesson 3 That night if i hadnt of gone home & read my manual i wouldnt have discoverd that the DSC button is for your ABS traction controle and wont allow cruise controle wilest on , and wont switch off no matter how many times you drive your car till you switch it back off . Lesson 4 I could have easly been told by a mechanic i had a serious fault on my car paid a fortune unaware it was the Dynamic stability controle switch id pressed thinking it stood for Disc daaaaa . What a relief when i pressed the button again and everything was back to normal .so should you see ABS warning light and cruise control unavailable dont panic youv pressed the DSC button not your CD button . A very happy ending to this story thankfully .. Regards .Dino 😉

I agreed - thinking that she had no chance. She got in and jammed her knees up against the glove compartment and while doing that told me to try to open the compartment wit the handle. I did.... and it opened. 😀. I then put some WD 40 on each of the fastener bars inside.
