Secrets of Naturally Aspirated and Turbocharged Engines

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video explains, what is a naturally aspirated engine and a turbocharged (or supercharged) engine. Differences and Similarities between naturally aspirated engine and turbocharged engines.
A naturally aspirated engine is an internal combustion engine that relies solely on atmospheric pressure to draw in air into the combustion chamber, where it mixes with fuel and is ignited to produce power. In other words, there is no forced induction system such as a turbocharger or supercharger that compresses the air before it enters the engine.

Ok have you ever built a NA engine? I have built several high HP NA engines and to extract high amounts of power out of them as you state you need to RPM, large cams and large intake tracts. Gives you the power at these high rpm ranges but will be slow at low and possibly mid-range rpms...you now where most people operate engines at. Also, comparing sounds is ridiculous as turbo uses the exhaust to spin the compressor which in turn muffles the sound. You are making generalized statements here, I could spec a turbo engine to give more a nice powerband 1500-4000 the bulk of when you need that will be more responsive to a NA engine, the last 500HP engine I built had a power band of 2800 - 5000 so off idle was not as responsive as the 300HP engine that it replaced and had a similar kick that is similar to turbo lag. My current 2.0L turbo Audi is very responsive from idle on with no turbo lag. If you put a poorly spec'd large turbo on a low compression engine you will this sluggish throttle response; however, today's turbo's have reasonable compression ratio and use turbos with low friction bearings that spool quickly and designed to operate within the rpm that you need the power.

Does it have less power at low rpms because less air is taken in due to the car moving slower ?

I was looking to purchase the Honda CRV-LX or EX and had no idea about this turbo issue. Makes since. I am not sure if these 2024 Honda vehicles are properly put together. Can someone lead me to some small SUVs that are Naturally Aspirated and if turbo, are well put together. I currently own a 2008 Honda Accord, but it has 265,000 miles on it and it has been giving me some issues the last two years. Leaking oil, o2 issues, etc... I am just tired of putting money into it and looking for a reliable new, small SUV. I know Hondas, Lexus and Toyota have been reliable vehicles in the past. I live in the South Suburbs of Chicago and looking to raise the vehicle off the ground, meaning, it is hard to see during the winter months, when you are riding behind other vehicles and don't get me started on the rocks hitting the windshield. Any help, I would appreciate it.

Just think of it this way. The reason they are putting turbos on newer engines because the engines are smaller & they have to get those engines to work harder by forcing more air through creation higher rpms. This concept is great for race cars when your trying to boost performance but when you make an engine smaller & turbocharge it your just wearing it out faster. Also higher rpms create more pressure inside the engine block & higher pressure means there's a greater risk of blowing seals & gaskets. On the other hand a naturally aspirated engines work naturally at lower rpms & create less pressure on the block & will last longer. You can add a turbo to any naturally aspirated engine & get more power if you want. The only downside is your MPG is slightly lower but personally id rather have engine longevity over a 10-15% mpg increase. The reason manufactures are making so many small engines with turbos is because of Government Regulations on Emissions & MPG. The EPA has been destroying automobile reliability & longevity with combustion engines while at the same time pushing EVs that no one wants that are also not a realistic alternative. Hopefully politics will change & manufactures can get back to making cars with engines that people want. Its so crazy now they are putting 3 cylinder engines in SUVs & adding 2 turbos.
