Secretaries On Screen: Secretly The Most Important Person In The Office | Trope Explained

Фильм және анимация

Secretaries keep the company running, know everything about everyone, and are often severely underappreciated. Nowadays, there are a number of different positions that fall into this trope - secretaries, personal assistants, receptionists, executive assistants, and beyond - but they all share some important qualities, and have to suffer through many of the same problems. Though these jobs are integral to keeping their companies running, they very seldom get much recognition for all of the work they do. So let’s take a deeper look at the various representations of the secretary on screen - from Mad Men's Joan to The Office's Pam to Veep's Sue to Suit's Donna to 9 to 5's Doralee and beyond - what she really represents, and why she deserves respect.

The 80's Twilight Zone has an episode where a downtrodden Secretary ends up in a parallel universe where secretaries are treated akin to models, and everyone is impressed when she admits that she's one. It's a nice subversion of the usual clichés, and she's able to cultivate her own happy ending.

I loved how in Suits, Donna was not only always the one keeping the firm together, but other characters actually acknowledged it, and when they didn't give her the respect she knew she deserved, she fought back. Plus, she worked her way up and earned the position of COO.

I didn't see the show, but COO is really the appropriate role for so many of the senior secretaries/executive assistants I have seen in my lifetime. It's not just the office that would fall apart without them, but the company itself.

I find it always amusing when women (Yes, most of the time it’s women) complain about how they have to take care of people all the time in a job like this, for people who are not self-dependent enough like your colleagues. Just a reminder: You wouldn’t be doing this job then if you don’t like the idea of being needed and in charge of things. Just be aware if you’re the mommy in the office the kids won’t ever be self-dependent. So, it’s more a teamwork in your case.

I use to work as an Administrative Assistant a couple of years ago and all of these problems I experienced myself. Unfortunately, I also experienced racism as well when I use to work in the office. It really sucks to not be respected even when you exceed expectations, be berated and treated like your nothing, be harassed by jealous coworkers who will do anything to get the promotion, passed up for promotions despite being one of the top performers, cursed out by customers over company policies that you didn’t create, and deal with racism from customers. I’m just glad I work from home now and I’m working in a different field that doesn’t involve me being on the phone. I feel more appreciated now and I’m finally rewarded for my hard work. I will never go back to the office and customer service ever again.

That reminds me that a lot of shows with "great lead male characters" are guys who we "forgive" for cheating on their wives. Note that these men are also fathers: It happens in Mad Men, The Sopranos, and even in a show like Pose, Evan Peter's character Stan cheats on his wife and children. They're never called out for it- at least in the beginning- definitely not by their other male peers. Women keep hushed about it. Even in a world like Crazy Rich Asians and real life, secretaries are supposed to help men pick out jewelry for their mistresses. This doesn't mean we should show more women having affairs. I get that it's drama, but it makes characters irredeemable when they do things like this- it's immoral. This is seen in Wolf of Wall Street too- even when he leaves his wife for the new woman, he ends up treating Margo Robbie's character like a trashy object/degradable trophy wife. And when the time comes, these "men" will dispose her too for a younger, more naive woman in her steed. Sorry for the rant! Note to The Take: if you're reading this definitely make this a video topic "The Disposal Family: How he gets away with having an affair"

In Veep, Gary could also be considered the other half, the "waiter" side to the secretary. It's interesting in the show that the job was Split in two, Sue for the administrative tasks and Gary for the personal assistant, and that the gendered roles were swapped, Sue being more assertive and Gary more nurturing.

I used to be an EA, and really enjoyed it, so i appreciated this video. One on screen secretary i simultaneously love and loath is Elaine from Ally McBeal. I love her because she enjoys her job, but also uses the less stressful workload to do meaningful activities outside of work. On the other hand, she always sneaking around and spying on people. This is supposed to be so she knows what's going on. The reality is that secretaries know what's going on is because people tell them. We also sit in meetings precisely so we know what's going on. We also take messages, open letters, and file documents with important info. It's disappointing that the show felt the need to ignore Elaine's presence in the work, and treat it as an annoyance. Another representation is Thoroughly Modern Millie. She is very skilled at her job, but she's only interested in finding a boss to eventually marry. I'd be interested in an AI video please. My opinion on how AI will change the role of a secretary is that it will be similar to the shift in the role due to PCs. Once workers could type their own letters, there was less of a need for typists. There were fewer admins in the office, but they took on greater responsibilities. I would be in charge of preparing different reports, and taking on minor projects.
