My first rifle I bought when I turned 18 was a 1898 Finnish m39. Still got that old girl, alot of history.

Mine was built in 1942. The craftsmanship on these old rifles is superb! after 100 years theyre still a reliable platform

Mine was an Izhevsk 1924 dated barrel, but the tang stamp had a 2 digit 98 with the Sestroryetsk arrow mark. When I disassembled it for cosmolene removal I was overjoyed. Sestroryetsk was the imperial armorer so this thing was an old imperial, eventually getting a barrel dated 1924, the end of the revolution, and then living out the rest of its life as a Soviet. I wish these rifles could talk because you're right. These rifles tell a story, and each lived its own unique life.....its truly humbling to be able to be part of its story now

I used to have a pre 1898 Mosin Nagant, receiver tang marked 1896, I wish this rifle could have talked because the receiver and stock, had Russian, Soviet, Nazi, Arabic and Israeli markings. What stories it could have told!

@@Raider214 Indeed it could. That's what I love about surplus. A friend of mind bought an Egyptian Hakim rifle when they first started importing those. When he disassembled it, he found a folded up photograph of a smiling Egyptian soldier, standing next to his wife who was holding a baby, and another young child. He sent the photograph along with pictures of the Arabic markings on the rifle and a letter how he obtained the rifle to the Egyptian Embassy, and was surprised, a couple of months later, when he got a letter from the person who was in the photograph, thanking him for returning the picture, and how his kids, who were now grown, enjoyed seeing the photo of him as a soldier. I had another friend that bought a rather well used Garand that had the remains of three broken human teeth embedded in the stock, but I guess that's another story.

@@aryanson man stuff like that is priceless. The rifle you can put a monetary value on but its story, and moments like that you just can't price.

The American-made WWI vintage hex receiver mosins (Remington, New England Westinghouse) were not dated under the tang.

I've got a 91/30 with a barrel stamp of 1927 that I need to go take a look at now. Great video. I'm glad I can always come back and reference these when I'm out Mosin hunting.

If the barrel date is different than the tang, it means that the barrel was likely replaced at some point. If the dates and serial numbers match, the rifle has more collectors' value. This means the rifle is as originally manufactured. I have a 91/30 dated 1930 on both the barrel and the tang with identical factory stamps and matching serial numbers.

My Mosin has a hex receiver but, the barrel is stamped "New England Westinghouse" and dated 1915.

I have a Finnish VKT M39 rifle stamped 1942. Upon disassembly, it has an 1897 Tula hex receiver. The date was stamped on the lower tang of the receiver. The ATF confirmed it was an antique and fell under the 1968 Federal Firearms Act, which declared any firearm manufactured 70 years before the act was passed as an antique (in or before 1898). An antique remains an antique even if you re-barrel it or replace the stock. I bought it as a Curio or Relic (C&R) firearm under 27 CFR § 478.11. If you modify a C&R, the changes may remove its C&R status, not so with an antique.

My MN has the same barrel stamped Remington Armory 1917 both barrel and receiver are stamped with what appears to be a small crown or leaf with two marks below that, I purchased this gun from Roses department store in the mid eighties for 28.00 the store clerk took me to the storage room to pick it out they had eight or ten boxes each box held several rifles I pick through these and got the tightest one I could find, couple years ago you could find them around here for three to five hundred they have disappeared now. I should have purchased the whole lot but I love my old rifle it's my most priced gun.

I just bought a 1905 hex receiver, a Finnish m39 rebarrelled in 1968.

I have 2 mosins, ones an 1895 Finnish that was redone in 1942, and my other is a 1942 russian 91/30

The one I just got is a 1935 pre war mosin

I have an interesting (probably not) Mosin. It's an Izhevsk 91/30 made in 1942 with a round receiver. But under the tang it says 19. Do you know what this means? It can't have been made in 1919, because it has a round receiver, is really crude and have a lot off machining/tool marks and bad finish, like you see on the wartime produced Mosins. What can the number 19 mean? Thanks.

It can be hard to find an original M1891, especially with the Tzarist eagles, as they were ground off many times by users during Russia's civil war-John in Texas

Now i have an 1894 dated barrel, took the rifle apart and on the tang it just says "9 upward facing arrow 4" is that for 1894 aswrll or would it have to say actually 1894.

Add add a shim under the screw that holds trigger spring/sear. You can adjust the trigger weight with the size of the shim. Add keep the action screws snug. She is what she is. Practice. Had some shoot great others not so much.

You can use sandpaper inside the stock to make the barrel more free floating, it should give better accuracy. It's not visible on the outside and will not destroy the rifle or ruin it's value.

I have a 91/24 with a Bohler Sthal barrel. It's a little late in the day for me to check the tang on the receiver but it is a hex with SA markings. It has a stepped barrel and is missing the wood from the top of the barrel, I'm thinking about making the wood, do you have any idea where I could find one that would fit?

Hi, thanks for watching! Your best bet is to buy a reproduction hand guard, and then do so sanding on the inside as needed. The stepped barrels will not fit the normal M91 handguard, Finland actually ran into this problem as well. They had to modify standard handguards so they could fit the thicker barrel! www.ebay.com/itm/254392457131

I got what appears to be either a 1931 or 1934 receiver with a 1935 barrel. The receiver stamp is very light and I can't tell what the last number is.

I have an ex dragoon dated 1925 on the barrel but on the receiver it's dated 1903. Is this a normal thing, ofc its got a hex receiver too but now im curious.

Hi Kraeber, cool gun! It is common to see that with dragoons from the mid 20's, especially from Izhevsk. During the Russian Revolution, many skilled workers from the Izhevsk factory either left or were killed (a topic for a separate video!). Probably due to the loss of skilled labor, or because of so many parts guns left over from WW1, many old recievers were recycled with new barrels! This definitely makes your gun that much more interesting!

There is no possible way your M91/30 was built in 1934 or 1936. The reason for the numbered name is because Mosin Rifles began production in 1891 and they ended production in 1930. If you live in America and have a Mosin that is stamped with any year after 1930, that designates when it was shipped to the U.S. THERE ARE NO M91/30 RIFLES BUILT AFTER 1930

Hi Nate, if the 3 looks like the one in the thumbnail of this video, it is probably an inspector or quality control mark. The bow and arrow indicates it was made by Izhevsk before 1928! It's interesting that there is no date, every Mosin is unique! What is the date of the barrel?

@@BigSamMosinMuseum On the barrel is stamped 1941, and I believe a mark of another maker, which is a triangle inside a circle. I have shot the rifle and it seems to be fairly accurate. It won't win any beauty contest, tho. It looks like it may have seen service.

My gun has number 99 r and = behind the trigger n the year on muzzle 1932

My 91/30 is dated 1942 on the barrel under the commie stamp. There is NO date stamp on the underside of the tang, nor other stamping anywhere around the recoil lug on the bottom of the receiver. The top of the receiver has a strange not-quite-round shape that could be from some potatoed-up Ivan slave making a botch of rounding off a hex. It has a minor pointy ridge down the top center where the left and right curves meet. Wish we could post photos here.

The hex was made before 1899?

A good way to look at it is that all antiques are hex recievers, but not all hex recievers are antiques

@@mattstarr8203 I have shot surplus ammo in several pre 98 Mosins without a problem that action is strong, I had one, marked 1895, with a completely shot out barrel and a heavily pitted receiver, and tried to blow it up and couldn't, I did succeed in rupturing one side of the barrel the split starting right in front of the rear sight and going about 10 inches forward, but when I unscrewed it from the receiver, I could see nothing that would have prevented the receiver from being reused. The only ones I was leery of were the Chinese Type 53 copies, I have seen several of these receivers crack with surplus loads

Lol that's hilarious, the ammo hasn't changed much since they set the pattern .

Mine is a 1943 Izhevsk rifle, I checked and it proudly bears the triangle with an arrow in the middle, and no date! Still awesome. A hex receiver is always a dead giveaway that you are dealing with an old papa mosin, way more time consuming to make, that is why it was done away with during the Second World War.

around WW1 you will see reciever dates missing the first digit, so instead of 1917, they would put 917. That's a neat rifle, thanks for sharing!
