Secret to Freezing Water in Seconds | Supercooling BYJU'S

Want to instantly freeze water? And learn a lot more about the nuances of freezing and supercooling? The process of formation of ice is far more complicated and fascinating than you think? We usually pop bottles into the freezer and never really wonder what’s happening down at the molecular level to transform water from a liquid to solid ice. Psstt… it is more than just water dipping below zero degrees!
This BYJU’S Now We Know video will explore the process of freezing water and teach you how to instantly freeze it by means of this fun science experiment based around supercooled water.

    I think the reason behind the freezing of supercooled water from top to bottom after the slam is that when slowly-slowly ice crystals were formed after that slam, it floats up because ice has a lower density than liquid water and that we eventually see as the freezing of water from top to bottom.

    I think it has to do with inertia when you slam the bottle the supercooled water moves up and slams the bottle cap and the energy then travels from top to bottom

    Yeah not exactly But according to me - Before hitting the bottle the molecules of water are in rest, if we hit the bottle, the bottle gives an external unbalanced force to the water molecules, so they starts moving randomly, this random movement cause the water molecules to form the hexagonal structure. The density of this hexagonal structure is less then the density of water, therefore the buoyant force causes this hexagonal structure to move in the upward direction.

    The density of ice is less than that of liquid water. Therefore, ice floats on the surface. Thus, the ice layer at lower temperature floats over the water below it. Due to this, the freezing of water into ice occurs continuously from the top towards the bottom. Amazing explanation sir!!!

  • @itsashutosh956
    @itsashutosh9562 жыл бұрын

    The ice starts freezing from the top and freezes last at bottom because of pressure . Water expands on freezing as water moleculer arranges themselves in hexagonal structures , because of this the pressure tries to resist it , due to this where there is more pressure, water takes more time to freeze . As there is less pressure on the top it freezed first and has higher pressure at bottom is higher so it took more time to freeze. I love you app and also content, animation, teachers and whole team I am also a premium student

    The Reason I think why freezing takes place from top to bottom: Inertia of Rest: When the bottle was slammed on the desk, and stopped on the horizontal surface the water at the lower level remained at rest, while the water at the higher level got the sudden jerk/ nudge needed to start the freezing into solid Anomalous Expansion of Water: We know ice is less denser than water due to the cage-like structure; causing it to have more empty spaces between its particles compared to the spaces between the particles of liquid water. Thus, the water (of the same temperature) but which froze earlier would float on the liquid water. Then I think energy travels from top to down and the extra jerk passes on the water below. This continues till there is enough jerk motion to freeze the water and (that is why I think the water near the base is still in liquid form)

    The ice formed on the top exert an force downwards on the liquid which easily allows the molecules to form the cage and converting into ice and this process goes till the whole water is not converted into ice .

    I think Its because of density difference between water and ice. Due to anomalous expansion of water, ice formed will rise and settles above water, as the process continues it later reaches the bottom. And thats why we see ice forming from top to bottom.

    When we give force from bottom by hitting the bottle in table , there we be change in momentum ie. bottom force tranfer to up . So that the water freeze from up to down

    Inertia of rest has something to do with the instant freeze of water in bottle as when bottle falls upright to the horizontal surface the bottle stopped but ice from top was still in motion up to bottom and then instant freeze process takes place from top to bottom

    i think this phenomenon happens due to their differences in the densities between water and ice....... at first , water get freeze and floats on it with the continuous process it seems to be like freezing from top to buttom

    It is due to the convection forces..... The water which is cool moves down and on the other hand the water goes upwards to make the temperature uniform in the whole bottle . The water in the upper side moved down because it was cooled and the nudge made them perfectly aligned.

    Is it because when we take the bottle out of the refrigerator, the water molecules are at rest but when we slam the bottle , the water molecules stay at that place due to inertia of rest but the bottle moves down which makes the water molecules hit the cap of the bottle first so the water freezes from the top

    I think when we slam the water, we first move the bottle at hand to top and then to surface. For the top movement, the topper molecules get frozen first and then it keeps freezing slowly and when we slam, the bottom molecules freeze instantly and we see that it is freezing from top to bottom. We don't notice the small portion frozen at top. Am I right byjus?

    I think it's about pressure!! We all know pressure is high at the bottom of bottle then the top, so obviously if there is high pressure...there should be more energy and hence Bottom part with high energy molecules take more effort to form a lattice like structure than top part! Hence we see top part (with low pressure hence low energy) freezing first then the freezing moves from top to bottom 😀 Am I right sir? 🤓
