Fell in love with Lee Chang-dongs movies. Glad to see people bringing his work back to light. I love all his movies but didn’t quite get this one, except for the critique on Korean Christianity. I don’t get the 2 main characters at all, especially the Romeo-type guy. I do like the critique on forgiveness and christianity though.

Beautiful explanation. I have a request tho. I know that there are many masterful korea n films out there, but I can actually find very few of them. So could you start making some korean movie recommendation videos on ur channel? That'd be really awesome

2:08 Can you explain why you believe Shin is hubris ? And why thats important? Is it simply because of the truth metaphor where everyone thinks they know the ultimate truth?

The one prideful part was she was mad at God for forgiving him before she was able to meet with him and utter the words. She was mad at God. Which is actually not terrible. It’s a father child relationship. Kids get mad at parents. It happens. Usually short term. Was His forgiveness dependent on her forgiving the guy. I don’t think it’s prideful to say you are going to a real estate agent. Land in a small town to build a house isn’t all that a sign of wealth. Because she was from Seoul he assumed her wealthy. When you don’t have enough everyone else has more than they need and you feel entitled to it. Another prideful part I suppose is she told the store owner to redecorate. Perhaps she was snobbish at times. Ignoring her late husbands infidelity was to preserve her pride. I think it’s part when she left Seoul that no one knew them. Too prideful to rely on her father. The brother said she just left.

Having seen the actors before I came across this film and just watched it. I was surprised there was so much born again stuff in it. I agree she got mad at God. Not for the death of her son. But for forgiving the killer before she forgave the killer. And to punish God started hurting herself. Sex, conflict with her church family, knife.. I really wanted to know some of the background of the kidnapping, pursuit of killer, etc.. But it was also brilliant it was not included cause it would have been an unnecessary distraction. I wish she called police when the girl was mistreated in the alley. Was that after the killer caught and because she was the daughter? I can’t help but think her crying in front of the locked piano lesson hagwon was what got him arrested. She would have been in a worse mental state without the closure of the guy caught. You can’t lose a child and not grieve in various stages throughout your life. Christianity allows for this. It even allows being mad at God. Maybe not this zealous form of Christianity? First her husband steps out, then her child murdered, then her former MIL attacks her. I liked the one sided love he was to be some sort of support for her. Was the child with the late husband present at the funeral? Or was that a different funeral? There was a younger boy holding a photo. Was it to remind us the late child also was a young chief mourner when his father died? I did not understand the last frame at all. Was it where the boy hid in the earlier scene? All a puddle with no sun? Was there some sun on the puddle? Was the hair cutting a rebirth of sorts? Had all sorts of problems with Parasite and I bought the movie before it won an award. Also noticed that when the son went missing she was drinking with a group at karaoke (Noraebang). But then she was not drinking with a group doing Bible study, the exact opposite. It’s also the last thing she did with the murder, drinking in a group. I believe you could see him in the parking lot when she dropped off the cash in that group of men talking. I really wanted them to talk about the daughter of the murderer more. I think she was at the outdoor revival as well. Was she beaten up for not paying her dads loan? She was a minor as well, that scene was tough. The woman could have called the police at least.
