The secret recipe for creating music productions, beats, tracks, and songs that have a vibe like the recordings and compositions of artists like Yussef Dayes, Berlioz, Knower, Jacob Collier, Monte Booker, Kaytranada, Alfa Mist, Kiefer, Domi & JD Beck, Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Louis Cole, FKJ, can be summarized in a few simple ideas. These styles/genres use complex harmonies from the language of jazz but in a simple context; using only a few chords in a song. When playing fewer harmonies, the keyboard instrument you are using becomes more important; for this song I use a warm, mellow, foggy, velvety electric piano. The chords that modern hip-hop, house, drum and bass and other beat genres utilize are extended minor chords; minor 9 and minor 11 chords. Extended harmony as well as dominant chords are difficult to use without losing the contemporary ambient, chill, lofi aesthetic. In this video we’ll look at how to build the chords and chord progressions you need for these smooth styles of music. While building these chords we’ll discover that we don’t need traditional scales because the 6 notes that comprise the chords can be used as a scale to build melodies, bass lines, guitar parts and more. We’ll create groove by using syncopation to make the music more rhythmically interesting and create layers of instruments by approaching notes as flavors on a spectrum from mild to distinct. At the end of the video, I’ll show you a simple and effective way to turn loops into sections and songs by introducing variations using an intuitive mirroring method. Finally, I’ll let you know about some great resources that will assist you as you continue to explore these sounds and ideas on your own.

Thank you for sharing this video 🙏🙏
So much knowledge 🔥🔥🔥
Scales are chords and chords are scales! I knew this, but this still blew my mind.
Excellent! Tasty, lush and vibey!
Recently found Polyphia and can't stop listening. I think they do a similar thing, but fuse Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Rock together in a unique way. Collier draws a lot of influence from Gospel too, perhaps it's this fusion of disparate genres that creates their unique styles.

Fun fact. Jaron went to north Texas for school and polyphia was only miles away. Definitely the harmony is in the water over there.

I was wondering what Hector Berlioz was doing in this video. I wasn't aware of the Berlioz band.
yes yes yall!
Awesome video! If you could also show the piano/keyboard view of you playing the voicings (instead of just the piano “roll”) that would be helpful. Amazing job!
