Finally a break in the Maryland weather so I took the truck out for a quick spin.

    The sound of the engine when letting the clutch out, lugging, the tiny spool, the big spool, the idle, going through the gears....man nothing beats this sound

    I have to admit that the cockpit of that truck is beautiful!! Plus manual transmission... Wouldn't trade that truck in my lifetime.

    Thank you! I’m the 2nd owner of her now. I picked it up last year with 77k miles. The first owner did a fantastic job of taking care of it. She’s just a weekend driver/grocery getter now. The only thing I have to replace is the dash…of course it still cracked even being well taken care of.

    The sound of that truck rolling through gears...nothing like it. Just good ole American enginuity at its finest. I have a '99 dually quad cab 4x4 that is set up almost like yours. It has the NV4500 with a small Edge tuner. Absolutely love driving it. I'm out of Frederick County, MD. Thanks for the video, really enjoyed watching it, and God bless ya brother.

    Yeah they are an absolute joy to drive! That sounds like a sweet setup that you have, duallys are neat/useful even if they’re a tad bouncier when empty. I’ve been kicking around the idea of an edge tuner. Frederick County is gorgeous, always enjoyed driving out that way. Thank you for watching and God bless man.

    @tannerdamico9895 Yeah, uh, not so much. Easier on the wallet when Donald J. Trump was president. I'm sticking with my 2nd gen Dodge Cummins because while other people are buying new cars for an astronomical price and wondering which electronically controlled parts are gonna fail first the day after the warranty is up, I'm still gonna be driving ole reliable. Straight 6 cylinders and compression. It doesn't get any simpler or better than that. 🤠

    Finally someone who knows how to drive stick properly, I watched a video about a power stroke 1995 model dually 7.3 changing gears, he put gas as he was pushing in the clutch, which can break the clutch. And no you don't add gas to the engine while doing the clutch, you let go of the gas and then push in the clutch. Also when releasing the clutch do it slowly so you don't break it.

    @@williamhsteele just the usual intake exhaust tuner from edge and fleece fuel system. I brought mine from an older gentleman that didn’t realize he could sell it for more. So I was quite lucky on that but it’s been a good truck, definitely doesn’t like the cold right now though.

    I really love dodge, I have a dodge dakota but I replace the engine to diesel nissan sd33T. But trying to find a dodge ram and cummins engine. in our country like here in the Philippines it is unique and one of a kind having a american muscle truck.

    Well it's kind da bet ok, but it is heavy than I though than the V8 4.7 that I take it out from my dakota. I only speed up my dakota with sd33T engine in the highway up to 70mph. Going to high hills highway is difficult because of the ratio of my differential.

    I just bought 01 6 speed high output i have been watching this amd other videos on repeat to get familiar with the sound and shift points great sounding truck. What rpms do yoh shift at?

    I apologize for the delay, busy week at work. Well I have 4:10 rears so it may be different for you but when I’m empty I shift between 1700-1900 rpm. The closer I get to 6th gear the higher up I’ll go. If I have a trailer I move to about 1800-2100 rpm. Do you know what rears you have?

    Recently picked up a 14 G56 crew cab and I was curious to see how the older models drove and found your video. As I'm watching it I realized where you were at when you came up to the liberty station.because I take that every day to get to work lol, small world. Truck looks and sounds great hoss. Keep an eye out for a Dark blue CCSB coasting around. Take care.

    @@williamhsteele possibly some 18"s with some side wall. Have stock 16"s now with highway Firestone tires and they look tiny in the wheel wells lol, followed by a DEF and EGR delete. But I'm going to enjoy a few months of not having to think about pulling out any tools on the daily lol.

    I have a 1995 12v p pump with a NV5600 in it but me speedometer doesn’t work, the shop that put it in said it was because the speedometer is mechanical and the speed sensor on the NV 5600 is electrical. I was wondering if you have any info on how your speedometer is working and mine isn’t. Thanks.

    Hey, so I’m not totally sure what would be involved with making your speedometer work. But if I had to take a guess it may have something to do with the output shaft size difference and the input gear collar/shaft differences. (Maybe swapping them out). But this is just my best guess. Sorry I don’t have a good answer for you.

    On my 95 12 valve with a nv4500 the speedomonter gear is in the transfercase just above the fill plug. Is your truck 4wd?

    Hey Gerald, yeah it absolutely does help especially when you have weight behind the truck. And of course these 2nd Gen rams don’t have the best brakes to begin with, so an exhaust brake is a plus.

    Hey, so empty I’ll shift between 1600-1700. With a trailer I’ll do closer to 2k. It does have 4:10 rears.

    It’s the exhaust brake making that sound. When you let off the throttle it activates and helps slow the truck down.

    The whoosh and whistle are the turbo, the discharge of a lot of air on braking is apparently ops exhaust brake

    I feel ya! I had a 97 automatic that I regretted ever getting rid of and felt like an idiot too. A few years went by and I basically went on a quest to find a manual version and this is the one I found and couldn’t let get away. How long did you have your 99?

    So I just bought my first ever 12 valve diesel. Never drove a manual before and having a tough time easing off the clutch and learning to down shift. Any suggestions or tips for a newbie. I stalled out a few time on the way home felt like a total idiot.

I don’t have any expert advise but the best thing I can really tell someone is find an empty parking lot or a field and drive the truck in a circle starting and stopping. Only working on 1st and 2nd gears. Those of course are your toughest. If you can find a little incline in a field or empty lot and work on taking off in first or second. I hope this helps.     @@williamhsteele mine is a2001 4x4 5.9 Manuel 6 spd dully withexcab . I pull gooseneck trailers and a34 ft fifth wheel with it,I amassed at the amount of power it has,I want to travel in the COLORADO mountains and in northernNM , get my fishing bugs out of my system. Maby further north some day and pull the toys also with me.

    That’s the exhaust brake. It sits behind the turbo and makes that sound when it closes up.

    @@kingkolt886 yeah it took me some time to get that down too. What worked best for me was figuring out what MPH’s my truck ran properly for each gear and downshifting accordingly to the speed. In my personal opinion (and others may disagree) I double clutch especially older manual transmissions. Manual transmissions were all originally designed to be double clutched. It definitely takes some practice though.
