Second City Television - SCTV - "Galaxy 66" - WMAQ Channel 5 (Partial Episode, 9/23/1979) 🔺

Ойын-сауық

Here's another rare broadcast of a (partial) airing of the Second City Television (SCTV) episode "Galaxy 66" (S01E17, original Canadian air dates October 10th and 14th 1977) as aired over WMAQ Channel 5. This would have been a repeat, as WMAQ first broadcast this in the 1977-78 season. As presented originally, all segments except the end credits conclude with the "laughing Indian" test pattern that disappeared from subsequent repackagings of the show.
Includes:
Recording comes midway into Segment 2, as Science Fiction Theater host Bradley Omar (Harold Ramis) is midway through his intro of "Galaxy 66" (a spoof of the 1960-64 TV series Route 66), followed by "movie" itself and futuristic ad parodies
Theatrical trailer for "The Onion Field" (ending voiceover by Ed Grennan, which is heard over first few seconds of next commercial)
Other commercials for:
Dinty Moore Beef Stew (with Vito Scotti?)
Revlon Flex Balsam & Protein Correct pH Shampoo (model in white cowboy outfit wielding a blow drier that looks like a gun)
Berman's - "The Leather Experts"
Show segment 3 (starts with "Swish Buckler" promo (featuring outdated gay depictions), a sketch making fun of the whole "Pyramid Power" thing, more of "Galaxy 66," "Beside the Point" and a "Bald & Brassy" commercial parody)
Commercials for:
Scotts Turf Builder
Continental Airlines - "You Should See Us Now" (with jingle set to tune of "If My Friends Could See Me Now" from "Sweet Charity") (voiceover by Casey Kasem)
Sally Hansen Hard-As-Nails with Nylon (ending voiceover by Ed Grennan joined in progress)
Gillette Good News! Twin Disposable Razor
Segment 4 - "Words To Live By" with Dr. Bradley Omar (Ramis) of the Universal Church of Science (opening voiceover by John Candy) and continuation of "Galaxy 66," followed by ending credits (recording cuts briefly in middle of Bradley's sermon and resumes after credits are already underway; recording ends before credits do)
This (most likely) aired on local Chicago TV early Sunday, September 23rd 1979 during the (approximately) 12:10am to 12:28am timeframe.

The last time this episode aired on American TV was early in the morning on September 11, 2001, during NBC’s All Night block.

Hey can we put some special effects in this next episode? Sure, here is a buck fifty. That should cover it.

Yes and no, this literally 43 years ago for a show that was low budget. In fact, for the time it's not half bad, especially considering this is comedy.

@@MJanovicable Oh I am well aware of the history of SCTV. Those first two seasons though were cruel for them to get through before they could eventually get up to Edmonton and do some quality television. Dave Thomas talked about the lousy hair and makeup and sets and everything looked like it was made for a buck and a half and sometimes they even had to go out and buy their own costumes from thrift stores like Edith Prickley's little leopard print number. I suspect though nobody on Canadian television was putting out any Star Trek-quality sci-fi back then anyway.

@@FlamingoKicker - In some markets in the U.S., "SCTV" was aired on stations that seemed to run on "a buck-fifty" budget. One such station was in the biggest market in the country - WOR Channel 9 in New York, which under RKO General always seemed run on the cheap. You would think in Chicago, this would have been a natural for WSNS Channel 44, but NOOOOOOO - WMAQ snapped it up from the get-go.

This is the episode that introduced Edith Prickley, Andrea's signature character. Otherwise, this is a very light episode for her. Besides a "Mutiny in the Bounty" parody that veers into homophobia, you can see the show finding it's voice in the back end of season one.

Using woke is just bring a parrot of the right wing. Do you believe in Jewish space lasers or Chinese hurricane guns too.
