A fantastic song that turns 50 this year.
This cover of “Sebastian" has been locked in a bureau drawer for 4 years now. We’ll see if it should have stayed there. Normally when we do covers, we try to “add” something or make a version from another perspective. It’s however impossible to do a better or more interesting version than the original recording. That’s the reason why it’s been collecting dust on a hard drive in a drawer.
I heard this song the first time in 1973 when it was released. I still recall that cold February day and this song that got under my skin…and stayed there even though I couldnt wrap my head around the lyrics.
“Sebastian" is a song with partly Incomprehensible lyrics ...the fact that it doesn't matter is a really interesting thing....it crawls under the skin regardless the fact that the "story" doesn't make any sense, and as Steve Harley self described it: ”its just poetry”… • Steve Harley - Sebasti...

I had the pleasure of going to a Steve Harley concert in Oslo in 2004 or 2005. It's still the best concert I've been to..imagine 1500 Steve Harley fans..singing along for 3 hours...magic!!
Well! I have done some "live" covers on this song...but I had to wait 46 years to record a cover so that my daughter Zenobia...could sing the female vocal part at the end of the song and who also made the drawings in this video.

Thanks so much! well.. it took me 4 years to gather enough courage to post this cover on youtube, and it was, believe me, not without trepidation that I pressed the "publish" button on this one:...it was scary-) No one wants to go down in history as a butcher of iconic songs written by iconic artists. Steve Harley was a 'No Compromise Genius''. He Blatantly refused Record Company Commercial overreach at the expense of his Writing and Musical Integrity. He 'mellowed' somewhat in later years but he never lost that 'edge' which defined him as a person and can be heard in his music. What a Legacy to leave behind, over 5 decades of Music and some of the best Pop / Rock ever written and performed. Enjoy your ''Timeless Flight'' Stephen Malcolm Ronald Nice you earned it.

🖤Yesterday Mars 17 th, we received the sad news that Steve Harely has passed away. My musical journey started when I heard this song in 1973. The reason I posted my version of "sebastian" was not because I thought I would make it better in any way, but because I wanted more people to discover Steve Harley and listen to his amazing albums or go to his concerts. I remember Steve Harley's (& Cockney Rebel) "Make Me Smile", but I've never heard this one! Anyway, it's a beautifully uplifting song and the visuals accompany it perfectly!! Bravo 'Black Heart Rebels' , really nice cover version - melancholic with beautiful lyrics! I got goosebumps when the backing vocals kicked in - just fantastic!

This is a Masterpiece by Steve Harley and deserves far more recognition than it receives.

Tnx for tuning in!..yes..well..you should know that I pondered for 3 whole years whether to release this version or not...finally I thought...what's the worst that can happen...some comments about "blasphemy" maybe. It's an iconic song and I know we don't even come close to the original(hence the links in the description)...BUT...if this means someone from, hopefully, the younger generation, or whoever, discovers Steve Harley's great catalog with all he's great songs, then we've actually done a "good deed ". One of the better covers out there, as you say it wasn't your intention to try and better the original, but to put SH and CR out there to a wider/younger audience. The 70s were the best time to be alive, anyone that says different, wasn't there.

Lol! Yeah..I guess you can smell a lot of different scents around this song. Above all, I feel the scent of a wonderful early 70's, where everything was possible and you could climb high on the charts with experimental compositions with close to nonsense lyrics and with a song that was also almost 5 minutes long in its original. I miss that time so much that I had to make a cover to get into that feeling. No cover of this song can measure up to the original nor was it my intention to in any way try to make a better version of this song. The good thing about this cover is actually that it has opened the eyes of some of the younger generations who haven't listened to Steve Harley and in many cases haven't even heard of him.
