Welcome to my world! Having my 1980 Vanagon for going on 43 years! One thing I can say for certain is, dont think your gonna figure everything out, she has a mind of her own! Thanks for a fun episode ! Its nice to see the gang all back together, minus MJ!

Glad I could help out in a small way, and help get Seaside on the road again. Thanks for the shout out fellas. You should absolutely sell those shifter tabs on All Metric. There are only two places I know of that sell them, and yours look superior. Great work as always.

I enjoy the VW comradery you all share. Teamwork all the way! I had a 58 VW panel that had the spare fuel compartment, w/switch located under the driver's seat, and my girlfriend was still worried we were going to run out of gas. She wasn't at all concerned that the panel didn't have no brakes.

I don't have a working VW yet, but my first mechanic experience was on my 57 split beetle when I was 15.

Learned so much from this series. Just got my first Vanagon and I loved watching you go through the systems

first trip picking up the Van last April, actually took the gas gage at face value, that was a long walk to get gas. another Vanagon owner drove clear over Toronto to help give a hand, and thats the story of ownership, friendly and helping. when you have the Van out it makes people happy, and then all the broken things seem more manageable.

Glad that Seaside brought your friends together again for this last "push" to find Seaside a new home. For a minute, I thought Jake was pushing all by himself. It will be good to have room for that next "rough diamond".

I love ya Gary, but its fantastic to see the whole crew again! Your people have missed you!

Glad to see Seaside back operational again! Ya'll should carry a little MSR camping bottle of gas when ya'll hop in for these test drives.

Yep, the shop doors are just a little short. Been here 22 years, guess its time for a new shop with taller doors!

Need to adjust those lifters. That thing has hydraulic lifters, you should not hear the valve train at all. If it's not an adjustment you may have a bad lifter or two.

Ol Seaside has a holy muffler too which certainly adds to the cacophony of sounds!

The shifter and coupling is really poorly designed. I don't say that often for VW's, but in this case it's absolutely true. I changed to an aftermarket billet shifter (Big Shot shifter that you can get from VanCafe) and used GoWesty's shifter coupling on the transaxle. The two together made a world of difference in driveability.

I wished I knew the "REAL' story on early Vangons. My analysis and opinion is VW did not have the Wasserboxer motor ready when they decided to bring out the replacement for the Bay Window Bus in 1980. So the Vanagon got the 2 Liter aircooled motor and things just sort got thrown together from there. I believe the shifter got upgraded in '82 or '83. I imagine somebody out there knows 'the rest of the story'!!!

@@CapnTexan Me too. I have an '86 Doka, and the waterboxer engine is an exercise in poor packaging. For example, you cannot pull the engine without taking apart the throttle body, because they put the throttle position sensor underneath, where you cannot reach it. There are numerous oddities like that throughout the car. I think even when it was ready, the waterboxer that is, it really wasn't ready. It's the hardest VW to work on that I have ever experienced.

I still feel like it has issues with the valves. Out of adjustment, broken spring, flat cam lobe. It just sounds funny on my phone.

it's super ticky for sure. has a rusty exhaust but the hydraulic lifters have been known to take a while to build up pressure. Hopefully the new owners can put some more time in on it. we went in circles for way too long and just was done with it . a bunch of QUITERS! we are ..LOL!
