Searching for York (full documentary) | Oregon Experience

The Lewis & Clark Expedition was a pivotal moment in American history. But the story of York, a man enslaved to William Clark and comrade on this journey, has been obscured by omission and stereotype.

@@lynns4426 my parents are from Jim Crow south and I asked them if they knew anything about any massacres that occurred during their time and they said no. Not even word of mouth. Nobody ever said anything about it….not knowing what happened to our people will cause a false sense of security that will get a person hurt or killed….this has gone on way too long…we have to teach and become more informed about our people.

I recently took a trip to Fort Clatsop and Desperation Point in the PNW and York was barely mentioned at the museums. It led me to search for more info and I found this doc.

When did York get time to master several dialects of Native American tongues, If all he was was a man servant/slave?

Natives helped slaves in the underground railroad. There were black chiefs believe it or not. slaves have integrated in gene pool descendents to come with natives, Italians, Irish, and a few polish because all were depicted as inferior to the forces to be

Sacagawea was also given "short shrift" in Lewis & Clark's journals as well as ignored by Congress when the "Corp of Discovery" finally returned back east.

My understanding is that he was a slave only in the America .... once they crossed over the Mississippi River, he was no longer a slave but a free man and was treated as such --- same with the 16 year old pregnant Native American woman who helped the expedition and even saved lives and journals; and the men even helped raised her son "Pomp"! It's actually a beautiful story of our roots and relationships between men/women/black/white/brown/children....
