Searching For Beer in Morocco & Talking About Scammers & Hustlers
While trying to find a beer somewhere in Meknes, Morocco, I talk about my various interactions with hustlers in the city who came up to me trying to sell stuff. The timeline of my story gets a little mixed up, since I had so many different encounters with various guys.

I might have been wrong in the beginning of the video when I stated that alcohol isn't specifically banned in the Koran. Apparently "intoxicants" are mentioned and advised against. But there's no specific punishment recommended for anyone drinking alcohol or using drugs. It sounds like the subject is debatable. Here's an interesting article by a Muslim who claims that the Koran doesn't ban alcohol: www.moroccoworldnews.com/2014/12/147921/nothing-in-the-quran-says-alcohol-is-haram-saudi-author

They banned it because clubs and men sitting talking and drinking started rebellions. They tried to ban coffee houses in both europe and Asia for the same reasons a couple of times.

A hardcore hustler in Morocco is easy to detect. If he looks like a Keith Richard after smoking a pound of cannabis, talks too much, too fast and does not listen, do not shy away from cutting his price by half, and don't budge! There are tons of people out there who would be grateful for making a modest income, by providing a great service. Those, in my opinion deserve more than what they ask for. Great video content never the less. Enjoy the adventure!

Do not waste your time if you need to drink alcohol... But if you want to get away from alcohol then it is perfect. Scammers are few and far between. Everyone trying to sell something will invite you for tea and so on... It is not a scam, you can have a tea and enjoy a chat and even if you do not buy something you are welcome. I have never seen as much generosity and hospitality as in Morocco.
Alcohol is found in Carrefour, all Carefours in Morocco have alcoloh section. Maybe you should've asked someone working there because the Alcohol place has it's own door. Or you could've just walked a bit in the central area and you'll find it easily The wine you took is from the Meknes (there is a map in the back lol), the beer youtook is the cheapest beer you can buy in Morocco, not a good one It is legal to have alcohol and sell alcohol in Morocco, Meknes actually has a lot of bars and liquor stores unless they are closed for some reason (they do close in the religious holidays)

Ive been up in the rif for about 7 weeks now , i arrived before most tourists had started to come back and there was a palpable sense of desperation from everyone in the tourist sector. once people recognise you after a day or 2 anywhere you get left alone generally. also once you have spent a few days here you start to understand what things should cost. bearing in mind the average daily wage here is between 150-250 dirham , any and all tipping will be gratefully accepted.

Interesting adventure, Gabriel, in getting beer & wine. In Fez the hotel where we stayed was a short walk from a huge Walmart-like store with grocery items, clothes, et. al. Outside of it on one side of the complex was a separate liquor store that was doing a brush business. Of course, we were in Fez on New Year’s Eve. So perhaps it was busier than usual. 😎 Sylvia

All vineyards are owned by Moroccans just like any other farming land. However Wineries are owned by anonymous companies (S.A = Society Anonyme). Traditionally those companies were run by Moroccan Jews, because a Muslim is "not allowed" to get a permit for producing wine. As twisted as it may sound, most alcohol beverages sold in Morocco, are consumed by Moroccans. (According to the statistics)
@IndjanTraveler

@@wilsonkorisawa7026 Good to know🙂 Actually I met a French guy in Essauira who was producing wine in in Marocco and he told me it was mostly exported to Europe, but I guess officialy it must have been owned by S.A. or Moroccain like you said.
I was"kidnapped" when I arrived at the airport in Marrakech. Essentially, the driver brought my to a different hotel than that which I had booked.They explained that the original hotel was undergoing renovations. Next day I got a 'no show' from the original hotel.
Brilliant Gabriel 👍
Morocco even produces a lot of alcohol, Meknes is the biggest Wine producer of Morocco btw. Most of it is consumed locally by local people. Also the part about it being banned in the Koran is part of a big debate (there is no right answer although the more agreed upon is that it is banned but lately many contest it), the Koran does tell you not to be intoxicated but doesn't specifically say alcohol and doesn't necessarly ban it, tha Hadiths on the other hand do explicitly ban it
@izzzzi8480

Yes u i dont contest it of course islam bans alcohol. Its just commen sense its a kibd of drug which maked u not anynore urself. What states in hadiths is important. The quran doesbt also tell us how we pray but the hadieth does. So if the hadith does ban alcohol and a little bit of commen sense u know whats right on this topic. The idea that some want tomake it hallal is ridiculous and luckily dobt know any who ever told me its hallal
Nice video Gabriel, I enjoy a beer while watching your videos 😀, for sure you can buy a beer in carrefour in Morocco as I did when I was there, the carrefour I went to sold it in a separate place form the main store in the car park, maybe if you ask someone in the shop they will tell you where to go

If you are in rabat you can find a liquor store and a bar across the street from the main train station.
Yeah, but do they have Desi Dharos or KasippuS?
If you know a good moroccan and I got to know one in Marrakech, being able to find the underground watering holes (wine cellars/bars) is easy....we went to essaouira (jimmy Hendrix fame 'castles in the sand) on the Atlantic coast, chilled out for a day or two then our friend enquired about ssh, secret drinking houses and before you know it we were in this large cellar with a vaulted ceiling as big as any bar in a UK high street full of men socialising over bottles of wine, spirits and most things alcohol...what a night that was.. :-)

Gabriel, I enjoy your videos when you talk to your audience about things, in this case dealing with folks you meet who want to sell you things like tours or merchandise. My question is how do you as a traveller balance seeing and experiencing for your own eyes and person and for those of your audience? Personally, I have been traveling for decades and would not know how to balance the need to provide material for an audience and what I would like see and do myself. Your thoughts are appreciated; thanks.

Beer used to be sold in Marjane stores in Meknès. But, the islamist movement in Morocco forced the Kingwho owns Marjane stores to stop selling Alcohol in there because he has the titles of "prophet's descendant" and the "prince of muslims". Marjane used to have a big section specialised in all kinds of Alcohol
I know larger Carrafore supermarkets in Morocco have a alcohol section called "le cave" have reasonable prices
It is very expensive to drink there. The more modern parts of town beer n wine are available.
It's the same in South America i experienced the same in Colombia and Brasil. They where nice people they just trying to survive most of them. I don't mind helping out with some few dollars. Kind of a donation, we are blessed to have more then them.
I really appreciate your open-mindedness and understanding of people's motives, btw that's not yogurt it's fermented milk. Just a little note on alcohol, It's actually prohibited in the Quran verse 5.90 "O you who believe! Wine, gambling, altars and divining arrows are filth, made up by Satan. Therefore, refrain from it, so that you may be successful." Translation by Mufti Taqi Usmani
